  • DIY Making an inexpensive Floating Pond Island to Help Improve Water Quality and Reduce Algae.
There are many ways this is done and lots of materials you could use. I just used what I had on hand. and I liked the way it came out. they all will serve the same purpose and grow aquatic plants with roots draping down into the water.

Your pond looks like it has a lot of sediment in suspension. I can assure you koi will make that worse over time due to their rooting behavior in the sediment. I love koi but just keep that in mind if stocking.
Cyperus alternifolius do well for me on the banks or in the shallows. They have a massive clumping root system and uptake a lot of nutrients but will leaf burn if it gets too cold. They are also very easy to propagate.

We used multiple PVC rings of water-hyacinth but it was so annoying removing the excessive plants out of the rings that I'd rather just pump the fish-waste onto the surface of the soil(a wetland). I think you should just dig a wetland as the filter where you can scrape out the organics when the water is low. Our turtle-traps use PVC floats too.

Thanks, all of the above in the works over time, First, islands, Second, aquatic plants and islands, Third, Fountain, last, large rock bed wetland Bog filtration (because it is the most expansive)

Very interesting. I hope you have lots of those bottles cuz i find they crack up after a while due to possibly sun exposure. Where'd you buy your screen material from? How come you didn't line your pond with pond liner?

I was thinking that the sun would not hit the jugs because the plants would shade them totally to soon. I had the screen lying around, but I think I got the roll from Home Depot?

@TheFrugalHugelGardener ok I guess the foliage of the plants would help to shade the bottles somewhat. But how come you didn't line the pond with pond liner?

@TheFrugalHugelGardener the screen material you used is a aluminium mesh or some king of plastic polymer mesh

@@geriannroth449 the pond is filled by my natural water table so you do not need a liner. Note: when installing a pond liner you can not have a natural water table or the liner will float, even if you place sand over the liner. So as it is I will have a floating skimmer and pond fountain.
