- Composer: Ludwig van Beethoven (17 December 1770 -- 26 March 1827)
Orchestra: Concertgebouw Orchestra
Conductor: Willem Mengelberg
Year of recording: 1943 (Live in Concertgebouw Amsterdam, The Netherlands)
Overture from "Egmont", Op. 84, written in 1809-1810.
In 1809, when the director of the Court Theater asked Beethoven to write incidental music for a Vienna production of Goethe's Egmont, the play had been around for 20 years.
This overture, powerful and expressive, is one of the last works of Beethoven's middle period; it has become as famous a composition as the Coriolan Overture, and is in a similar style to the Fifth Symphony, which he had completed two years earlier.

My favorite version of this overture. I love Mengelberg's conducting!!!
You're entitled to your opinion. It is definitely not my favorite version.
00:06 - Sostenuto ma non troppo.
02:15 - Allegro.
06:40 - Allegro con brio.
Great performance by one of the greatest conductors ever lived, and with Haitink the best of The Netherlands! It is fitting music for that time. I dont know count Egmonts specific story, but the times are alike; Egmont and The Republic where opressed by the Spanish, while at the time of this performance The Netherlands was occupied by the Nazis. It is a secret call to rebellion. Even if Mengelberg was accused of being friendly with the germans, he still was a 'Nederlander' in heart and soul.

Daily reminder that this was performed during wartime.
Where is that sheet music from?

couldn't you offer a better quality recording? I don't care how historically important or famous this performance is.
I don't know how serious you are but if you need another recording, RUclips itself has lots of them. If you need a score, you can download it for free from a site like IMSLP. If you look at this channel it has lots of recordings that are hard to find. Grow up and try to appreciate some hard work or you are nothing but a dumb jerk!
You're right - there are numerous other recordings on RUclips for the asking. As for scores - not all postings have them, and in this case, I noted here and there a measure or two was omitted, so on that account I could say that a better reduction could have been posted. But for other performances - I would definitely look elsewhere. I came here only to follow a score, which in this case I did not find to be reliable as I would have liked.
TROLLLLLLLLLLL
I agree. The recording is just dreadful. I also don't give a flying blue little fuck about how famous or important it might be.
This music is done wrong. He had a good thing going at the start, but then he tried to make it fancy. It would be nice to see someone use the first 6 notes and follow them up with an epic theme. You could make an Avengers level theme like that.
its not his its beethoven
flexobrain Beethoven had it wrong.
