I had the REVERSE of this problem. I was watching a friend play, and he kept dying. I told him to just go level up and collect more upgrades and stuff. He REFUSED, because he wanted to beat this game like a true man. He gave up a week later.

Same dudes are the ones who make it almost impossible to get a friend into a souls game. Right out of the tutorial on DS3, you get end-game builds invading you and rarely see a friendly summon sign. "Why don't you just play offline", then they say I'm playing the game wrong.
Fromsoft: "We made our bosses harder so people will multiplayer and use summons and ashes." Fans: "😭😭😭 why are people playing with all the tools built into the game." Me: "Why are you like this?"
As a fromsoft fan, git gud. Just kidding, using summons and using estus and using all that stuff is fair games. Pontiff kicked my ass so you know what I did? I went outside after I died, killed the knights and summoned me up 2 homies. And we killed Pontiff. I'm not bad, or a skill issue cuz' the rest of the game wasn't very notable, I just used what I had to get past a speed bump. Or in this case a speed wall. I don't know anything about Elden yet, very poor cannot afford it yet. Do not spoil please.
Toxic souls players be like: no you can’t use spells, summons, or ash of war even though the creators put them in the game for you to use them. It’s unfair and not Miyazaki’s vision.

Not so much purists, I could care less about how you play the game but I don't like summoning because I like beating the bosses. I summoned the first time I beat Malenia and I felt zero accomplishment, so now I never summon.
Apparently, Miyazaki's vision of playing the game involves having salt rubbed on your flayed body as your eyes are torn out of your head, and your soul is tormented by demons.

Thank you for bringing this to everyone's attention. This actually happened to me. You bringing awareness to this topic makes me happy and I appreciate it. I had to play with no Arms. Use my teeth with my eyes gouged out. Every experience slightly differs though.
Thing is, everyone should play however they want and that's cool! But there is something special about learning a bosses patterns until you are a good at dodging, spacing, and killing them. Ashes, Summons, and Certain Spells and Weapon Arts distract from that, makes it unnecessary. However, that is only one way to approach the game. Nuking shit with well synergized/overpowered builds can be hella fun as well.
@@Phoenix-qv9hg Agree, personnaly i am from softwere veteran but during my first playthrough istill did used bleed build and summons :D (bleed build was accident, just wanted to make samurai build) on secong though i will go strength faith build and most likely no summons, but its so cool mechanic so i am not sure about that, its fun becuase you can make thematic builds with it.
Personally I’m only against summons because I like to learn the bosses moveset, windows etc, the summon distracts him and even if I beat him I haven’t learned a thing. That being said you can play the game however you want you don’t have to play it at lvl.1 and no hit hit or something😂
@@user-ww1gk5ku1w Some bosses deserve mimic tear because the entire fight is such dogwater that you aren't missing much by doing it that way. Such lovely examples include Commander Gaius and the final boss of the dlc. My bullshit meter usually lets me know after like 10 deaths tops whether or not a fight is actual cancer. Fuck those two fights in particular.
Also that interview with Miyazaki where he says he uses every resource in his games because he couldn't beat them otherwise. He even said he uses his insider knowledge of the level and enemy design to help him out. If anything the devs probably use him as base level to know if they can make it harder or not. I can just imagine Miyazaki dying over and over to Bayle and the Promised Consort.

My philosophy with Fromsoft games is only to not look up cheat guides or vids that show you how to beat or chz it. If you discover something u should use it. That's just for gaming experience tho, to each their own
I have a friend who never played a souls game, and really loved how spectacular the magic in Elden Ring looked, so he bought the game and it's playing it, full mage, spells and summons, we always jokes to him naaaah you're playing easy mooode, but one day a guy came out and started trashing on him and insulting him for real, we all just jumped like, man you just can't go around insulting people like this for playing the game, let him do whatever he wants, before that point we thought it was a big joke the "real gamers" shit, but we quickly realised there's people that actually think like that man wtf
There is those kind of people anywhere, the point of playing is to have FUN, even people who use cheats to pass phases are good for me, I can't see the fun in using cheats but if someone else's does and it's not a multiplayer game then do it, fuck it, life is already hard enough to me be putting hardships in another persons free time.
I'm an old Morrowind vet. My favorite thing about that game, and now these games, is just how thoroughly you can break the balancing within the confines of the games. A grand, intoxicating innocence.
The Morrowind community also has its share of annoying members, but at least they acknowledge that breaking the game with spell crafting and alchemy is part of the fun.

It's an action rpg, problems (the enemies) can be solved by either an action solution (getting really good at dodging and understanding timings of when to attack and stuff) or an rpg solution (changing gear, using summons and/or various spells strategically, etc) For some reason some people get real mad when you take the rpg solution, but the game very clearly offers both as potential options.
yeah and elden ring you can feel itdirected a bit more to casual players dark souls 3 1 or 2 you would have to git gud to beat gunthyr miyazaki made magic and faith spells good for casual player and for returning players of the franchise to try new stuff same with the ashes system which is ingenius for players

It’s even worse when they complain about a game being too hard but they refuse to use the buffs and items the game gives you (e. g. status effects, summons, etc)
I'll admit I'm guilty, but I only complained about bosses just doing too much damage at the endgame with 40+ vigor. Older games never could one shot you in the base game and even bloodborne only had one boss do that and that boss couldn't do it with every attack.

Lol no one who ever played a souls game thought Elden Ring was too hard. One of the biggest complaints fans of souls games had was that ER was so mind numbingly easy. That and the fact they completely fucked up the pvp
And the funny thing is, most of the people who act like that seem to have jumped onto the game later because they heard it was hard and that’s the only appeal they see to it, meanwhile plenty of people who started with DS1 because they just though it looked cool will generally tell you play in whatever way is most fun to you.
@@kristoferprovencal3608 There’s generally two types of fans of these games: the ones playing it entirely for the pride of being a god gamer, and the ones enjoying how well-designed the levels, bosses, worlds, and lore are. The latter tend to have a lot more fun, while the former tend to gatekeep and do SL1 no weapon no fun playthroughs where they grind for 40 hours to beat a boss. The latter approach would be fine if they didn’t gatekeep like crazy. The worst thing is how if you complain about any mechanic that you deem to be unfair, they WILL always defend it by saying “get good.”
I personally love to 1 v 1 bosses without summons and have since the early games, but play the game in whichever way is fun for you. Part of appeal of the formula is all the gameplay variety that it offers.

Old From Software players know creating the cheesiest of builds is tradition. Creating over powered builds that one shot bosses is what some strive for.
I still remember a Dark Souls video where this guy beat one of the games under the special condition that he must 1-shot every boss, using every single mechanic and glitch possible to get what he needs to do it.
Wrong. Old Fromsoft fans know what challenge runs are and that they are the bread and butter of from games. Real men won by their own skill we didnt have filthy 1 shot mages doing kamehamehas at bosses. If we had something close we had chad pvp invaders ready to slap them with vow of silence real fast.
and most of the time, Fromsoft Pros are just lazy to change builds..... like ight, I like how this weapon looks, I'm just gonna put in str or dex because to lazy to look for spells.
As a veteran souls player I would say a real souls player would put a sign here and help with the boss, real gamer will know the struggle and help other players.
And that is why I think sekiro is just 100 times better than any souls game, in Sekiro you cant just use items or abilities for the harder bosses, and if you can is not that big of a help anyways
The FromSoft developers put all this broken stuff into the game on purpose. They literally balance the game around you having op stuff. It’s just up to the player to use it.

I like the fact there's no easy difficulty setting though, it means whoever gets through actually worked really hard to win. Easy modes might make the game accessible, but a necessary challenge always makes it rewarding to win rather than masochistic. Like "Why am I playing on hard mode, I should just switch to easy mode" haunting your mind. Keyword: Necessary, throwing away op stuff is pointless.
This made for a nice pallet cleanser after watching a guy bitch about how hard the DLC bosses were while simultaneously saying that you didn’t beat the game if you used summons.
The gate keepers are probably the most annoying thing about from soft games I say this as a from soft fan since dark souls 1. Why does it mater if someone summons or uses spell casing how is it affecting you?
Well it affects me when people spam broken spells and ashes of war in pvp. A lot of the time I pretty much only lose duels when that happens. Also when invasions are always a 3 vs 1. As for pve people are ruining the game for themselves and ER gains a bad reputation for being unbalanced. I really hope they severely limit magic and summons in the future like in sekiro and kind of bloodborne. ER was a huge step back in that regard

It's actually funny because I think the spirit ashes are the intended way to play the game. -You get the bell at the start -You are expected to find more summons as you explore -you are expected to level up the bell - and the game deliberately tells you whenever you can use it. -unlike prior souls games you can summon as many times as you want with no loss of a permanent resource unlike other souls games. - also many of the later game bosses feel balanced around summons. Not using core systems of the game is not developer intentions. That's a challenge run.
You’re thinking of spirit ashes. Ashes of war are the special ability within a weapon that can be activated by using LT/L2, and to my knowledge do not make use of summoning nor the summoning bell.
I don't think spirit ashes are necessarily the intended way to play. They're simply another tool given to you early enough that you can start expirementing with it. I never invested in fp so I couldn't do much with them myself but I do like the two skelly spear men. They're squishy but their ability to regenerate makes them surprisingly useful as a constant decoy.
@@flandretek I never said you couldn't play without them. I said not using core mechanics is a challenge run not impossible. You could similarly play the whole game without leveling up. You are not interacting with the core mechanic of leveling up and thus it is a challenge run so too for the summons.
@@flandretek I don't think that's really true. I don't think the developer designed the game with me wearing a blind fold in mind so it clearly won't be balanced for that, but I can still do it.
I will be honest, status effects were how me and my brother made it through much of the game in our first run. Using rot, bleed and frost almost constantly. We still had a lot of fun, and in our second run, we ended up doing a *self imposed* ban on a lot of easiest ways to inflict those statuses. There should be no shame in how you choose to play.
Yeah exactly, if you find the game hard there is no shame in abusing magic or whatever the only potential downside is losing out on fun but if you aren't going to enjoy playing it "traditional" then what's the point
On my first play through I spent a lot of time just exploring and bossing my head against tough foes. I enjoyed my challenge but I only started really having fun when I went to the plateau early and found a weapon that inflicts scarlet rot and happened to work great with my build. I also picked up an ash of war in the same area called Blood Blade and suddenly had a massive power spike where my DPS shot through the roof and I had way more ways to engage each encounter. In my opinion discovering these powerful mechanics organically is perhaps one of the most fun parts of the game, even if they can trivialize some encounters. (I beat Malenia in 4 tries so while cool that fight wasn’t terribly challenging with my build.)
When I saw in the trailers that you would be able to summon your own goons to fight along side you, I was so hyped. I don't get why people hate when you use spirit ashes. its so cool wtf?

I swear, Elden Ring has the current worst "Fromsoftware-sexual" gatekeeping problem out of all the games. You say you use Claymore or Zweihander in DS1 people call you based. You say you use RoB and Bloodhound Step in PvE and people will saw off your nutsacks before crucifying you inside a volcano.
Zweihander still takes skill with the pokes and wide swings. Rob is just cringey weapon art spam. Like my mom could play elden ring at that point. Kinda defeats the purpose of the series but everyone likes to play their own way so each to their own. Even though you don't really learn mechanics or anything valuable if you just cheese anything. The path of least resistance isn't always the best one if you're looking to improve yourself in souls games

How to ruin the experience of a new player: completely skip constructive criticism and make them play it your way because "That's the real way to play it, hardest difficulty, no items/spells/built-in mechanics" Items are there to be used. Spells are there to be used. Ashes of war, summons, Torrent, shield, parry, jump, dodge, armor, level ups, weapons, etc. A win is a win is a win. And watching your friend succed and have fun should be your top priority. That's why we also leave messages with tips: so people can move forward and have a good time, so they don't go hollow
So there is nothing to be said for ashes of war being an intended easy mode? Bowling is something people do for fun yet they dont use gutter guards in pro tournaments do they? Do you think they have fun?

Being able to do it without takebacks is in and of itself a fun experience and i think people rob themselves of that when they put up the gutter guards or play with ash spirits. But I think that's silly to point out to because I'm sure the people who actually use them would never argue that it's a true bowling experience, nor would they argue that they are a "true bowler". Not everyone has the time to invest time and effort in things they don't care about. If you have to point out to people that they're doing something incorrectly or inefficiently when you know they more than likely don't care in the first place, doesn't make you a good person for pointing it out, just means you go out of your way to be annoying about it. It'd be better to gauge the person's interest in whatever activity they're doing and ASK if they want tips on how to do it better. If they say no, then that's the end of that. If you offer that knowledge without being asked to then I wouldnt* be surprised if people found that irritating and unnecessary, because for the most part it is.
True story: I had a friend that was like this. After he did a similar "favor" for me in Ninja Gaiden Black, I beat the game with mostly the training Nunchuku. He stopped talking to me for about a month. I am convinced of these type of people have trouble beating something, so the build a fantasy of "elitism" if the do "X-thing" (which in most cases they can't do themselves), to enforce on others for the soul purpose of making sure others aren't having fun. For example look at the journos and Dark Souls.

I don't understand these people. If these was glitches I'll somewhat understand, but whatever is given to the player is what is intended to be used.
You are welcome to your opinion but it's been my experience that the ones trashing people are actually that good at the game, it's just that they are absolutely filth at everything else in life. All their time and energy went into being good at the game.

From my experience most people make fun of Rivers of Blood not because of how fun it is in solo but because of all the fucking ganks invading with it in low level areas
Its funnier now cuz in a recent interview Miyazaki reveals he also struggles with his games especially Elden Ring so he uses every tools available in the game.
I was hoping for an additional twist in the end, where the blind one-armed dude suddenly starts owning Elden Ring as he is out of no where, baffling the FromSoftware-sexual
I love how you have two halves of the Souls community: The side that just enjoys that games and encourages others to endure the challenge however they want, and the other half that makes fun of cancer patients because they didn't play the game without summons
As an hardcore fromsoft player. I think summons are greatly implemented in ER. It's genius to reach a wider player base without compromising with the overall design of the game.
Yep, It’s a much smarter implementation of an easy mode into the game and it’s also a lot of fun to try out all the ashes, and if you are feeling brave you can go solo and get a more classic souls experience. It’s a win win for both sides of the community I believe.
@@CDLightt Bosses are powerful in ER but it's not that hard to solo them. Even Malenia is a pretty fair boss to me without summons. I know it's a controversial topic. But I went to NG+7 beating Malenia each time. I used summons only on my first run. Lately I did a last run from scratch and I still killed Malenia without summons. I used a Greatsword with bloodhound step and I did an Strenght/Ice build.
The thing I hate about challenge hounds (as I call them) is that they prioritize raw difficulty over what ACTUALLY makes melee combat fun in From Soft games, which is getting down the patterns. But there are ways to do that with magic builds too. Personally, I like playing with all types of builds-the fun comes from learning how to work optimally with each one and how to maneuver around a boss as a strength build v. as a dex build vs. as an int build, and so on. Experimentation and learning are what makes the game fun, not ass-bleeding difficulty for the sake of ass-bleeding difficulty.
IMO it just does that so well, too. Instead of opening up your settings and changing the slider to "easy/normal/hard", you instead just change up your kit. Crazy people can strip down naked and run in like a cave man. Or you can summon a small army, call up some RL friends, even get someone to do the whole fight on your behalf. Pretty good deal
Well said. The amount of self expression seamlessly integrated into the game from the sweatiest lvl 1, no-hit speed runs to big dick Guts cosplay to fucking Goku’s kamehameha, is nothing short of masterful. There is no easy, medium or hard mode bc that all depends on you and your build.

I'm not bad, or a skill issue cuz' the rest of the game wasn't very notable, I just used what I had to get past a speed bump. Or in this case a speed wall. I don't know anything about Elden yet, very poor cannot afford it yet. Do not spoil please.

Thank you for bringing this to everyone's attention. This actually happened to me. You bringing awareness to this topic makes me happy and I appreciate it. I had to play with no Arms. Use my teeth with my eyes gouged out. Every experience slightly differs though.
Thing is, everyone should play however they want and that's cool! But there is something special about learning a bosses patterns until you are a good at dodging, spacing, and killing them. Ashes, Summons, and Certain Spells and Weapon Arts distract from that, makes it unnecessary. However, that is only one way to approach the game. Nuking shit with well synergized/overpowered builds can be hella fun as well.

Ya Elden ring is easy though, the older souls games are better cuz they don't got short cuts that hold ur hand like Elden ring.

Personally I’m only against summons because I like to learn the bosses moveset, windows etc, the summon distracts him and even if I beat him I haven’t learned a thing. That being said you can play the game however you want you don’t have to play it at lvl.1 and no hit hit or something😂

Such lovely examples include Commander Gaius and the final boss of the dlc. My bullshit meter usually lets me know after like 10 deaths tops whether or not a fight is actual cancer. Fuck those two fights in particular.
Also that interview with Miyazaki where he says he uses every resource in his games because he couldn't beat them otherwise. He even said he uses his insider knowledge of the level and enemy design to help him out. If anything the devs probably use him as base level to know if they can make it harder or not. I can just imagine Miyazaki dying over and over to Bayle and the Promised Consort.

It's an action rpg, problems (the enemies) can be solved by either an action solution (getting really good at dodging and understanding timings of when to attack and stuff) or an rpg solution (changing gear, using summons and/or various spells strategically, etc) For some reason some people get real mad when you take the rpg solution, but the game very clearly offers both as potential options.

I'll admit I'm guilty, but I only complained about bosses just doing too much damage at the endgame with 40+ vigor. Older games never could one shot you in the base game and even bloodborne only had one boss do that and that boss couldn't do it with every attack.

I've come across a lot of strange gamer cliques in my time, but FromSoftware "purists" climbed to the top of the heap so fast its hilarious.
And the funny thing is, most of the people who act like that seem to have jumped onto the game later because they heard it was hard and that’s the only appeal they see to it, meanwhile plenty of people who started with DS1 because they just though it looked cool will generally tell you play in whatever way is most fun to you.

There’s generally two types of fans of these games: the ones playing it entirely for the pride of being a god gamer, and the ones enjoying how well-designed the levels, bosses, worlds, and lore are. The latter tend to have a lot more fun, while the former tend to gatekeep and do SL1 no weapon no fun playthroughs where they grind for 40 hours to beat a boss.
The latter approach would be fine if they didn’t gatekeep like crazy. The worst thing is how if you complain about any mechanic that you deem to be unfair, they WILL always defend it by saying “get good.”
I personally love to 1 v 1 bosses without summons and have since the early games, but play the game in whichever way is fun for you. Part of appeal of the formula is all the gameplay variety that it offers.

Old From Software players know creating the cheesiest of builds is tradition. Creating over powered builds that one shot bosses is what some strive for.
I still remember a Dark Souls video where this guy beat one of the games under the special condition that he must 1-shot every boss, using every single mechanic and glitch possible to get what he needs to do it.

I like the fact there's no easy difficulty setting though, it means whoever gets through actually worked really hard to win. Easy modes might make the game accessible, but a necessary challenge always makes it rewarding to win rather than masochistic. Like "Why am I playing on hard mode, I should just switch to easy mode" haunting your mind.
Keyword: Necessary, throwing away op stuff is pointless.
I'd rather not have busted as sh spells and summons if it means the late game bosses don't move like Sekiro bosses.

Well it affects me when people spam broken spells and ashes of war in pvp. A lot of the time I pretty much only lose duels when that happens. Also when invasions are always a 3 vs 1. As for pve people are ruining the game for themselves and ER gains a bad reputation for being unbalanced. I really hope they severely limit magic and summons in the future like in sekiro and kind of bloodborne. ER was a huge step back in that regard

-You get the bell at the start
-You are expected to find more summons as you explore
-you are expected to level up the bell
- and the game deliberately tells you whenever you can use it.
-unlike prior souls games you can summon as many times as you want with no loss of a permanent resource unlike other souls games.
- also many of the later game bosses feel balanced around summons.
Not using core systems of the game is not developer intentions. That's a challenge run.
You’re thinking of spirit ashes. Ashes of war are the special ability within a weapon that can be activated by using LT/L2, and to my knowledge do not make use of summoning nor the summoning bell.

I don't think spirit ashes are necessarily the intended way to play. They're simply another tool given to you early enough that you can start expirementing with it.
I never invested in fp so I couldn't do much with them myself but I do like the two skelly spear men. They're squishy but their ability to regenerate makes them surprisingly useful as a constant decoy.

You could similarly play the whole game without leveling up. You are not interacting with the core mechanic of leveling up and thus it is a challenge run so too for the summons.

I will be honest, status effects were how me and my brother made it through much of the game in our first run. Using rot, bleed and frost almost constantly. We still had a lot of fun, and in our second run, we ended up doing a *self imposed* ban on a lot of easiest ways to inflict those statuses. There should be no shame in how you choose to play.
Yeah exactly, if you find the game hard there is no shame in abusing magic or whatever the only potential downside is losing out on fun but if you aren't going to enjoy playing it "traditional" then what's the point
On my first play through I spent a lot of time just exploring and bossing my head against tough foes. I enjoyed my challenge but I only started really having fun when I went to the plateau early and found a weapon that inflicts scarlet rot and happened to work great with my build. I also picked up an ash of war in the same area called Blood Blade and suddenly had a massive power spike where my DPS shot through the roof and I had way more ways to engage each encounter.
In my opinion discovering these powerful mechanics organically is perhaps one of the most fun parts of the game, even if they can trivialize some encounters. (I beat Malenia in 4 tries so while cool that fight wasn’t terribly challenging with my build.)

DS1 was pretty rad but also incredibly flawed and I guess I just dont understand why all FSW third person action horror RPGs are compared immediately to DS1 (and always found lacking). If you have to point out to people that they're doing something incorrectly or inefficiently when you know they more than likely don't care in the first place, doesn't make you a good person for pointing it out, just means you go out of your way to be annoying about it.
It'd be better to gauge the person's interest in whatever activity they're doing and ASK if they want tips on how to do it better. If they say no, then that's the end of that. If you offer that knowledge without being asked to then I wouldnt* be surprised if people found that irritating and unnecessary, because for the most part it is.

I had a friend that was like this. After he did a similar "favor" for me in Ninja Gaiden Black, I beat the game with mostly the training Nunchuku. He stopped talking to me for about a month.
I am convinced of these type of people have trouble beating something, so the build a fantasy of "elitism" if the do "X-thing" (which in most cases they can't do themselves), to enforce on others for the soul purpose of making sure others aren't having fun.

As an hardcore fromsoft player. I think summons are greatly implemented in ER. It's genius to reach a wider player base without compromising with the overall design of the game.
Yep, It’s a much smarter implementation of an easy mode into the game and it’s also a lot of fun to try out all the ashes, and if you are feeling brave you can go solo and get a more classic souls experience.
It’s a win win for both sides of the community I believe.

@@CDLightt Bosses are powerful in ER but it's not that hard to solo them. Even Malenia is a pretty fair boss to me without summons. I know it's a controversial topic. But I went to NG+7 beating Malenia each time. I used summons only on my first run.
Lately I did a last run from scratch and I still killed Malenia without summons. I used a Greatsword with bloodhound step and I did an Strenght/Ice build.

The bosses are difficult sure, but that's exactly what players who don't summon are looking for.
The thing I hate about challenge hounds (as I call them) is that they prioritize raw difficulty over what ACTUALLY makes melee combat fun in From Soft games, which is getting down the patterns. But there are ways to do that with magic builds too. Personally, I like playing with all types of builds-the fun comes from learning how to work optimally with each one and how to maneuver around a boss as a strength build v. as a dex build vs. as an int build, and so on. Experimentation and learning are what makes the game fun, not ass-bleeding difficulty for the sake of ass-bleeding difficulty.
Or Difficulty whores.
The problem is magic is way too good in Eldenring, it isn't fun killing bosses on first try,

Instead of opening up your settings and changing the slider to "easy/normal/hard", you instead just change up your kit.
