Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z 500 km Test | Are Long Rides Comfortable On The Biggest Pulsar?

  • Is a 10-year-old motorcycle a hidden gem or a dated relic? Join us as we dissect the Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z, a bike that masquerades as new but carries a decade-old legacy. With a 373 cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine inherited from the 2013 KTM 390 Duke, the Pulsar NS400Z promises thrills but delivers mixed results. Here is a detailed NS 400 review:
    Performance Breakdown
Despite its powerful engine, the Bajaj NS 400 Z falls short on fuel efficiency. On the highway, it offers a disappointing 22-24 km/l, giving a range of just over 200 km. In the city, it slightly improves to 24.85 km/l but still lags behind expectations. Even in spirited riding, it barely manages 20 km/l, reflecting its struggle with fuel economy.
    Ride and Comfort
The NS 400 bike has a lively engine with 35 Nm of torque, making it an exciting upgrade for riders moving up from smaller bikes. However, this excitement fades quickly. The Bajaj NS 400 bike maintains a comfortable 110 km/h on highways, but vibrations become bothersome at higher speeds and overtakes require frequent downshifts. Its city performance is marred by the need to constantly work the gearbox, and anything below 3000 RPM causes the engine to shudder.
    Design and Ergonomics
The 400 NS Pulsar seat height of 807 mm is accessible, but taller riders may find it cramped on long rides. The suspension is soft, handling small bumps well, but struggles with sharp ones. The handling is a letdown, requiring more effort to enjoy cornering, and the non-radial tyres fail to inspire confidence, especially in wet conditions.
    Features and Usability
While packed with modern features like all-LED lighting, ride-by-wire, riding modes, and smartphone connectivity, the execution is flawed. The riding modes of the Bajaj Pulsar 400 NS are cumbersome to toggle, the screen is cluttered, and the low fuel warning is premature. These issues detract from the riding experience.
The Pulsar NS 400 starts at ₹1.85 lakh, and the NS400Z offers a lot for a 400cc bike but doesn't elevate the Pulsar brand. It brings accessible performance but lacks the excitement of past Pulsar flagships.
So, is it worth the investment?

I bought this bike 10 days back and I have tested it in worst and least situation, so far I have driven 520kms and for me it gave tank to tank mileage around 29kmpl. By the way I drive this bike in Bangalore traffic and also took it on highway for 200kms. You know Bangalore traffic is the worst and it gave more than 27kmpl in peak traffic.

I'm from Bangalore too, so I can understand the traffic scene. See this is a 40bhp machine, if we ride it like a 20 bhp machine, shift gears precisely and not rev too much, you'll get the mileage you're getting. But the moment you open the throttle a bit and try to enjoy the power on tap, efficiency will drop rapidly. KTM engines are not known to be fuel efficient, but they manage because of their low weight. These bikes with the same engine are heavier, so it will be difficult to squeeze out mileage from them. Keep your mind prepared for a long term 25kmpl and enjoy the bike, don't care about shift rpms, just have fun. Otherwise don't buy 400cc 40bhp machines for city traffic, commuter bikes are much much better for that. I'm not targeting you my friend, just the topic of this thread

This is the worst ever review I've seen on the whole of RUclips. Everyone and i say everyone has spoken so highly about this bike. Yes i understand there may be some flaws but those are negligible. In this sad review of yours every point you made only has hatred towards the bike. This bike is not meant for your 100kg gunnysack. Go get a foreign bike for yourself.

The bit about the Pulsar is that it doesn't have flaws bit it doesn't have greats as well. Remember the 180 DTS-i? The 220F? The NS200? They had a lot of great bits and some major drawbacks. But still, there was much to love. This Pulsar sadly doesn't have those feelings. The Triumph Speed 400 also isn't a wow motorcycle in totality but what it is meant for, it does brilliantly well: make the British brand accessible without compromising on core beliefs. The Pulsar core belief from 2000s sadly is no longer there in 2024.

@@ackodrive Your contradicting your own statement buddy. You say the 180, 220, NS200 etc they had great bits and also you say they had some major drawbacks then what's the point. You say the early 2000's pulsars were good but I guess u didn't ride the CBZ or the Karizma which were way better. In my honest opinion early Pulsars were crappy. Only after merging with KTM is when pulsars have evolved. The new generation Pulsars are really the best and trust me this is coming from a Honda fanboy. I used to always love Honda bikes but this Pulsar NS400Z has really changed the way I've been thinking. For this price point this bike has everything above and beyond. Hence they call it the pocket friendly rocket. 😃🚀

      @@ackodriveStongly agree!
Owning N160, it has a lot to offer on paper but doesn't implement any of those perfectly.
      My observations on n160:
      1. Made for commuting but stock seats are uncomfortable
      2. Design is sporty but Engine is long stroke and is tuned to produce low end torque
      3. Made for commuting but engine don't want idle properly, need to rev in bumper to bumper traffic to keep it running
      4. city oriented bike with long turning radius🤦‍♂️
      list goes on and on...
Bajaj need decide what they need to make first, if one has to design a bike for commuting with long stroke engine why the hell it has uncomfortable seats and sporty look and sporty handle bar position?
      Same goes with updating also
n160 got 3 updates in last 6-7 months
One with removal of dtsi, second is addition of digital display, third with USD and Navigate supported digital console and removing oil cooler.
What the hell is going on is IDK
Then comes trellis frame on Freedom😂 It's already at around 145kg and why you want to save kilos by going trellis frame maybe because of CNG tank they went I guess coz of safety reasons.

Brother gave a review like he already hated NS400Z before it even launched. A mileage of 22KMPL when riding between 50-55KMPH? I hope you didn't mean Miles/hr and mistakenly put kmph. Maybe you really did feel those are flaws but maybe you were comparing it with bikes pricing around 3.5-4L. You started comparing it with the likes of MT15 and easily transitioned to D390 2024. Did you compare D390 with MT15 too?

I own the same bike and have a different perspective. Living in Bangalore, I find the bike gives me about 25 kmpl in the city and 32 kmpl on the highway. I consistently feel the thrill of pushing the bike, as if it's encouraging me to twist the throttle and rev it up. While I agree that the tires aren't the best in rainy conditions, considering the price, it's a reasonable trade-off. I believe different experiences can shape our views, and it's important to share them all.

Nothing of those sorts should be tried on the streets.

It won't affect the mileage, the engine is a dohc setup which consumes more fuel as compared to sohc because dohc gives better top end and revs higher easily. Shift gears timely and you will see a fuel economy of 32 or 33.
