    So, to summarize, go to law school if you want to be a lawyer, but if you don't want to be a lawyer, don't go to law school. Well stated, counselor.

      Austin Beaumont so then why do people go to law school who don't plan to be a lawyer? What is their end goal?

    • @TheAustinBeaumont
      @TheAustinBeaumont 7 лет назад +9

      My comment was more an observation on the banality of her thesis. E.g., if you want to be a civil engineer, go to civil engineering school, but if you don't, then don't. It's about the most asinine thing to say. From my experience in law school, 98% of people were there to be lawyers. The other 2% were bored housewives or guys who had an awesome 6 years at the frat in undergrad and wanted another 3 years to party.

    • @lynnea4782

      It's clearly not that obvious, because some people (even in the comments below) disagree with me.

      Austin Beaumont actually many people go to law school for other reasons than being a lawyer. It’s just her advice..

      @mafaldapratasfernandes1719 5 лет назад +5

      @@TheAustinBeaumont Actually many people go to law school and they want to be in other professions, somewhat adjacent, but in which many people have a law degree. That triggers people into thinking they should get a law degree if they want to be successful in those professions. Examples: politics, lobbying, public/government administration, private administration jobs, non-profit/foundation work, public service work, etc.

      Dead Otter Walking honey I’m in my second year of my undergrad and just changed majors, and while I’m fairly sure I want to be a corporate lawyer, that might change. Don’t feel bad about being unsure: there are so many people who have no idea what they want to do well into their adult/professional life. Don’t pressure yourself! Also, if you do go to law school, that will help you decide which areas of the law you’re interested in. You do NOT need to have everything worked out right now.

    Thank you for sharing your experiences!!! Xox keep kicking butt, but... I have a question, will pursuing a law degree help in wanting to work in the international community aka EU, NATO, representing your nation? Thank you!

    • @SimplyAvalon
      @SimplyAvalon 7 лет назад +2

      Absolutely! However that is not the only avenue to do so. Many jobs in the international community specifically in the UN and NATO are based on a national quota meaning at certain times they would not need to hire you (depending on the country that you are from meaning that they are also very competitive). You could also work in the private sector for many businesses now a days because of globalization are multinational.
      A business degree could be just as helpful for many jobs where you'd be able to work in the international community. I guess it totally depends on whether you'd like to be on the law side of it or not since those jobs don't have to be totally related to law although it's certainly a plus. Hope this helped. :)

      Mel I haven’t done law school yet but I have been told many times that it’s very recommended to go to law school in the country/province where you want to practice. Ex. If you get a law degree in Canada you are licenced as a lawyer in Canada, but not anywhere else, so if you went home to Australia or something you wouldn’t be able to practice there.

    I just found out I got into the best law school of all the Nordic countries. It's always been the biggest dream of mine even though I'm 99% sure I'll never become a lawyer. University up here in the north is free, so it isn't really a big investment when it comes to money - we actually get paid to go to university, around 1000 US dollars a month. They say here that law school is a really good base for any job really, so that's why I chose it.
    Hopefully it'll be worth the time and energy :) I'll definitely come back to your channel for study tips once it's time for the first exams!

    Lynnea, thank you for all your videos, they are helpful and enjoyable to watch.
    I wanted to ask you about "reading" in regards to determining if law school is right for someone. Could you be more specific in what kind of reading someone may like to do that would be more revealing of whether or not law school is for them? Someone may like to read, say, Harry Potter but I'm not sure how telling this is of doing well in law school and reading tons of casebooks.
    What sort of reading material should one look towards more specifically to determine if they would do well in law school? What sort of readings are relevant to law school for someone who may be a prospective student? Thanks

      Doesn't really matter. If you're deadset on law, studies show that STEM fields do the best on the LSAT, fields like criminal justice and political science (and prelaw) do the worst. But really, do what you are interested in. Most employers will like seeing you have education in some interesting field unrelated to law.

      English would be a good undergrad degree for law school. Just make sure you take a good number of technical writing/composition-type classes (i.e. if you simply study literature, especially fictional literature, that will not really be helpful to you at all). Because, as you will someday find out, being a lawyer means you WRITE A LOT. I'd say at least a full half of every single day of my job is purely spent writing stuff (whether it be complaints, answers, motions, discovery, briefs, or even just emails).

      Do something you’re interested in and could live with doing as a job of law school doesn’t go as planned (also a lot of law schools see Pre-law as being “easy” so I wouldn’t recommend that)

      URCHIN SAM what kind of chronic illness? I guess it depends on how heavily it would affect your ability to keep up with law school (ex. moderate arthritis won’t be as debilitating as something that has you bedridden).

      She_Wolf you need an undergrad and can get any undergrad you want; I recommend something you’re interested in (helps you do well if you’re actually interested in what you’re learning) and that you could deal with doing for a job of law school doesn’t work out

      don't use prep books, they will only slow u down, just schedule a test and take it, if u fail, keep taking it, until you research on ur own WHAT FUCKING BOOKS YOU SHOULD HAVE TO PREP FOR THE LSAT. No ones gonna hold your hands, figure it out on your own.

      Oh. Then, Aakanksha sorry. I don't think I can guide you.
      Your reply takes me back to my past. I wanted very very badly to become a researcher in any fields of bio after my 12 grade. But somehow I ended up choosing Law. I hated my freshman year but as days passed by I started noticing that I'm really liking law. Everything about law has fascinated me. (Of course you won't like every single subject though. LOL). Right now I enjoy being here. And there has never been a single day I regretted my decision. Best thing is you can become a Researcher in Law too. (Added bonus, right?). I don't want my decision to influence yours. But if ur current life is not making you happier then it's time for a shift. Whatever you do, just wait until graduation. Then change your track. Good Luck!!

    • @Ali-ro2vv117
      @Ali-ro2vv117 7 лет назад +1

      That's understandable, but if your passion is in teaching it would be worthwhile to stick to it. Of course I know very little about the discipline in which your passion lies, but if it coincides with law, or if law is something your are interested in (as means to your interest), then it never hurts to put your best foot forward and aspire to teach law at a higher level. My current philosophy professor is also taking night classes at the law faculty of a neighbouring university. Ultimately, do not be discouraged by your external limitations my friend. Higher education is (more often than not) a worthwhile investment.

    Seems like the only realistic option in politics where you can make 6k is lawyer am I wrong or? Also I'm trying to decide between employment law and criminal... I'm interested in litigation and it seems both fulfill that, I also am interested in what either lawyer does so now I'm trying to figure out what's best financially between the two was wondering if you had any input. I'm really interested in one day holding a government posistion or posistion of a judge so also trying to see which one leads to that more so.

      DiaRia Grace p I don’t think she can help you with SATs because we don’t have those in Canada
      Also, you need an undergrad/bachelor’s degree to get into law school, as well as a good GPA and good LSAT score, not to mention a good application, resume, transcript etc
