One thing about the fingers when you are starting is that you need to develop calluses on the tips it makes the string ring clear. At first your tips are soft and will still make the string sound somewhat muted. Happened to me when I first started.

I don't have a guitar but I'm thinking of getting myself one for christmas, I've always wanted to play some type of instrument but my parents think it is a waste of time, "You should focus on art instead!" they say. Yes art is my passion and yes I am studying art but that doesn't mean I can't also learn something else along side it. Playing the guitar sounds so appealing to me, so many people from my family know how to play it, my cousin even doing performances.. The sound of a guitar is so tempting, I've messed around with a guitar before but never had one of my own. Those few times when I had the chance to try and play it in school, while over at my relatives place.. They were so fun. It's the only instrument that I have ever wanted and I think I'm ready to get one, if not from my parents or relatives - then from myself. :)

I just found this video and I am on day four of my first introduction to guitar. The fingers hurt but are becoming more flexible (I am 63 years). I found your video very informative especially about the positioning of the thumb and wrist of the fret hand.

I don't know if he says it in the video, but if you're pressing the strings down to the wood you're pressing too hard, and your fingers might turn red after awhile as well. In order to use little pressure while still getting clear sound, move your finger closer to the fret you're playing. The fret is a lot higher than the wood on the neck of the guitar, so the closer you get to it the easier.
Ok so i play violin and we are supposed to use the flat of our finger imagine how hard it is for me knowing how to play violin 3 years and just now starting to learn guitar with the TIPS of our fingers. Holy heck hard

Try cutting your nails of your fret hand Very short. Notice how he arches his fingers so that he is pressing with the ends of the tips his fingers. This usually requires that your thumb is at/on the back of the neck. Make sure you are not wrapping the thumb over the edge of the neck.

I don't know if he says it in the video, but if you're pressing the strings down to the wood you're pressing too hard, and your fingers might turn red after awhile as well. In order to use little pressure while still getting clear sound, move your finger closer to the fret you're playing. The fret is a lot higher than the wood on the neck of the guitar, so the closer you get to it the easier.

But we buried Dad in September of 2012 and he never got to see us play it. So Dad. This is for you. I hope you are watching me and soon you will be hearing me. oh the nostalgia of when I played my first chord on the guitar :,) ... it's been 9 years already and now I'm into hybrid speed picking and tapping arpeggios. The secret is just to be constant. Play regularly and don't let anyone discourage you on it, follow this two simple not so simple things and I swear to you that you'll get there eventually.

Try cutting your nails of your fret hand Very short. Notice how he arches his fingers so that he is pressing with the ends of the tips his fingers.
This usually requires that your thumb is at/on the back of the neck. Make sure you are not wrapping the thumb over the edge of the neck.
