Just tore down a very similar perkins engine out of a 20 year old cat backhoe. i like the videos, not nearly enough diesel techs post great info compared to the auto industry. Diesel mechanic a hard industry to love, nothing ever comes easy in this field of work.
Your girls are adorable and look just like Spanky. It doesn't matter whether they ever touch an engine or wrench after they're grown, they are better for knowing what those things are and that they make things work. And that Dad loves and values them enough to share his interests. My wife helped a neighbor rebuild his boat's motor as a kid. She doesn't really have an interest in that now, but she has a solid idea about how the world we live in actually happens because of it.
Nice to see you sharing the basic engine info with your daughters. It's a form of training for life. Spending time together and not necessarily having anything to do with building engines. It sets the foundation for knowing there is more than television and video games in the real world. Take care -Glen
I did the exact same job on an old 1992 V W Golf , 320000 km , used the old sleeves but had to use a ridge reamer on them ,I'm enjoying every minute looking forward to part 2 , nice one Brian .
"SIR" CLIPS ... You said it. I haven't heard that word spoken correctly in 40 years. That's called 'correct nomenclature! ' ! Your creditable has advanced a full NOTCH with me ... 'Kiddo'
Thanks George! I usually mess things like that up, but I was trained by and ran with and worked for a lot of WW2 era guys. My drafting teacher who had us drafting all kinds of WW2 bird parts was a pretty sharp guy when it came to that kind of stuff.
Belatedly, happy fathers day. Your kids are adorable. One way to give them really fun attention is to sit down with a pad and paper and and say, 'Tell me something you liked today or something you found funny. Then I'm going to put it in a sentence.' Then you write the sentence being sure to include her name. It helps them learn reading and writing. And you demonstrate that you care about what they are thinking/doing/feeling. Keep the papers in a special mementos box.
Brian , the taper on the top ring is for the purpose of , when the cylinder fires the pressure forces the ring out against the cyl wall ! Just love your vids
We are rebuilding a 4.236 right now. I know this is not what you want to hear but you should double check with maxi force that your two scraper rings were not swapped backwards. The spring loaded conformable was supposed to be the 4th ring for ours and the maxigroove was supposed to be 5th but in our pack that maxiforce sent they were swapped in the same order that I see you putting them on. When we pulled our pistons, we saw the order and then saw they were different in the pack. Quick call to Maxiforce let us know that it was packaged wrong. Ours is a '91 marine diesel so a different build number but I would double check.
Interesting. That ship has sailed for now. It runs awesome and doesn't use oil so it must not be that critical. It wouldn't be worth tearing down at this point.
Your girls are darling! Sounds like you have figured out the dad thing. I try my best, but my daughter is 6 and I should start taking her out to the garage with me. I also enjoy new parts, although I haven't ever rebuilt an engine.
Will your daughter is 6?? she just wants to spend time with dad...take her out to the garage..teach her tools.. how to oil change.. I taught my son at 9 how to change brakes on my Honda accord...3 0 years later he STILL remembers it and has used the knowledge :) for other brake changes
6 is just about the age that they say "Can I help you, Papa ? So get the old clothes on them and get them 'out there'. ... It will take you twice as long but the Pay Dirt is when, at age 15, she shows up with a, would be, BOY FRIEND, that has a TURD of a Comero (that he just bought) & he says that he is hearing "funny sound" when he applies the breakers. ... She pulls the car in the garage , jackets it up & pulls the the wheels & commences to do a full on Brake Job . The 'we wimp ' drives away and is never heard from again. 'Nuff said.'
Shoutout to the B-mob! 5 rings, heck yeah! I talked about pistons like these hypothetically in a DSM ring install video and said if you ran into a set like this, refer to the instructions included for ring orientation. I thought they were unicorns. Now I can send people here instead. I always like the BFATE. If I did that, mine would be about breaking anchor lines, total electrical failure, complete engine failure, catching nothing but a half dozen stingrays, or sinking boats in the Atlantic.
Your daughters got their good looks from you! Your wife still has hers. Good video! I love well made things! Quality excels! Engine will last decades more. It’s better to be on the ground, wishing you were up in the air than to be up in the air, wishing you were on the ground.
Really should have checked ring gap but to be honest I don't remember the last time I had to file rings but I still take the time to do it just in case.
They're already matched to the piston they came with and the sleeves were sized to the pistons. Just one of the advantages to using a machine shop and doing the full rebuild kit with everything there at once.
I like your videos. Do I plan on working on all the stuff you work on ??? NO but if ever I have a problem then I will have a better understanding of whats going on and just how much labor is required. You and Eric O. are my favorite mechanics. I know your family is proud of you. ps Did they ever find that missing kid that you were looking for with your hang glider?
Yeah, I harvested and cleaned the old connecting rods there and just kept on truck'n through the job. Some people would call that "autopilot". I guess it also kept me from bending over more. It was a good work height and somewhat contained things on a soft elevated surface.
NebukedNezzer the machine shop does all that, that's why the kit was provided exactly the right size for the rebuild. So Brian doesn't have to do that.
Lol when you buy Oem the rings are already installed on the piston..... He said spray pattern hahah you know fire comes out of diesel injectors.... like I you had a camera in the cylinder you would see fire come out the tip......
@@briansmobile1 can you maybe with another question there’s 2 different head gaskets I feel like my entire engine is something that someone put together using left over parts for different engines but what is the difference on the copper head gaskets on something in the neighborhood of 1960-65

I love that idea! Thanks Kevin.
That's exactly what I thought when I first saw these bearings too! I knew this would be a good series. Been meaning to catch it for weeks.
Your blessed to have a great relationship with your girls. Lots of tips on piston rings and of course the flying is the desert after dinner.

Correct and it is called a chamfer. Been building engines 54 years.
1:16 soo cute. My daughter is about the same age as your older girl. Good times, you are blessed

Loving this Brian, keep kindest regards from Bonnie Scotland. Joe.

Nice. Your girls are great. Ours is 6 now and never fails to amaze me with the silly stuff she says and does sometimes. We have a ton of fun with her.
excelente VIDEO......... EXCELENTE PADRE DE FAMILIA....... SALUDOS AMIGOS.
Muchas gracias amigo!
briansmobile1 - not just for sound automotive advice, but also advice on how to raise your children.
the grove on the 1-2 rings are for pushing the ring out with combustion gas.
Cute kids sir,do the rings not have to be sized,do they come perfectly sized, can't wait for pt.2
They're already matched to the piston they came with and the sleeves were sized to the pistons. Just one of the advantages to using a machine shop and doing the full rebuild kit with everything there at once.
It seems like yesterday that my children were that size. Now they are grown and gone.
Uh, did you test fit and end-gap those rings or just stick them on and hope for the best?
8:15 if I’m not mistaken that ramped edge expands out when the gases hit it making a better seal from the compression.
That's exactly right!
From which manufacturer do you most often install perkins 3152 piston, cylinder liners and piston rings.

Good Dad!
Hi ...is it true that theres no need to put oil ring with expander if the liner was new
What the model of this engine my friend.
Perkins 4.236 1988MY
what did you torque your connecting rod bolts to?
those Gals are so cute,
Good parenting sir.
Thanks Ben!
Was there a reason why you assembled the piston and connecting rod on a plastic drain pan? Im genuinely curious. Thank you!!!
Yeah, I harvested and cleaned the old connecting rods there and just kept on truck'n through the job. Some people would call that "autopilot". I guess it also kept me from bending over more. It was a good work height and somewhat contained things on a soft elevated surface.
briansmobile1 thanks Brian!!!!! Love ur channel!!!
Sweet video brian amazing work bro
I noticed you never end gapped the rings. maybe not necessary?
NebukedNezzer the machine shop does all that, that's why the kit was provided exactly the right size for the rebuild. So Brian doesn't have to do that.
Great, it got done.
The rings will rotate slightly in the engine anyway.
Lol when you buy Oem the rings are already installed on the piston..... He said spray pattern hahah you know fire comes out of diesel injectors.... like I you had a camera in the cylinder you would see fire come out the tip......
*everyone shouting PART 2, PART 2" I'm excited
No new for bushings?
Did u forgot to measure the gap for rings when u put them in cilinder
Where do you get your parts
👍 SWEEEET
Your girls are so adorable Brian
I have exactly same engine but my pistons are flat top why’s this
Different compression ratio.
@@briansmobile1 can you maybe with another question there’s 2 different head gaskets I feel like my entire engine is something that someone put together using left over parts for different engines but what is the difference on the copper head gaskets on something in the neighborhood of 1960-65
Tengo 4 pistones 83mm lzuzo
Your daughters are very cute Brian ... must take after their mother ??? :) LOL
Coukd have kept it more clean during your assembly... takes little to no effort and gives a lot in return...
can't tell if he's teaching his kids or asking us to make memes of them...
The engine should outlast the chassis now.
Girls can do lots of things that are traditionally for boys.
