  • The very first documentary from Ryotaro's Japan follows Shunsuke Ajiki in his attempt to be elected as a politician in Japan. Elections here are quite different to in the west - so take a in-depth behind the scenes look at how a candidate makes their voice heard.
    You may remember Shun from my video introducing Tome City, this documentary follows his struggle to become a city councilor.

Chris' brand of sardonic comedy may be all well and good, but I definitely appreciate this more sober look at the real Japan, the Japan that no travel video can show you, the Japan that only those who live there, those who were born there, may ever know.

Having a government job and being unable to make a positive difference can be disheartening. Many people either become complacent with their position and stop caring or don't want change because it makes them uncomfortable. We need younger officials who understand the government is there to make life better for its citizens. There's needs to be actual progress, not just movement.

    I think Shun was very brave to run for this election. Even if the outcome was not good in the end, I hope he's not going to give up and try again next time. He tried to stand up and give voice for the younger generations, which is very important. Sadly, most of the politics (not just in Japan, but all around the world) are dominated by older people, who don't seem to care about the issues that the newer generations have to deal with. We need more people like Shun!

      I am not Japanese , but I do enjoy watching Japanese politics so I'll try to explain as i see it. I think it's common to vote based on this principle not only in japan but in many countries. I feel like locals usually vote for e.g.mayor, governor... not based on what he promises but rather what have you heard about him from other locals, and that is only amplified when the locals are older lol. However I noticed that this is the case mostly for local elections, in general elections, I'd say, people don't really vote based on this but rather party affiliation or endorsement from a bigger politician.

    Can't believe I am late - thank you Ryotaro, this video was so instructive and I really could feel even just a bit of the pressure that Shun-san was under. He did an amazing job for his first election ever and I wish him great success in his future endeavours. Really felt sad when his son asked "where's your name Dad?" that hit me hard. Wishing him all the very best!

    Shun, your voice and words in the video had a genuine sincerity to voicing your struggles and concerns. Don't give in and never lose sight of your message.
    You didn't win the election, but you won the faith of 500 people. I think that's amazing, especially for a 'newcomer' to politics.
    I'm from the UK, where a lot of people are apathetic towards politicians (myself included). It's refreshing to hear someone speak with a sense of genuineness.
    Change can be hard to achieve, but it's the struggles we go through that make it worthwhile.

Different to how it is here, with a lot of advertisement, massive posters, and almost 0 local interaction. Though it's probably not like this for every city, since in a big city like Tokyo it's probably not possible.

    Keep trying Shun! Japan was an economic miracle in the late 20th century. Part of the stagnation is down to young innovators not being given the chance to make real changes for the better!

    • @SorchaSublime
      @SorchaSublime 3 года назад +2

      i mean sure, but also it was an economic bubble less a miracle. bubbles burst

      Indeed, we seriously need innovative and challenging young ones like him. I want Japanese society to be a little more tolerant.

    • @Zei33
      @Zei33 3 года назад +12

      @@SorchaSublime I'm referring to the period of time from 1945 to around 1990. It was nothing less than a miracle. Japan lay in ruins after being bombed by the allies for years on end. The allies wanted to learn from their mistakes and prevent another war from breaking out. They setup a huge foreign aid scheme that made sure infrastructure was rebuilt, industries modernised and trade agreements established. Japan basically went through its own modern industrial revolution. Their economy exploded by the 60s and they made intelligent investments into industries that leveraged the country's unique position in the world at the time.
      The key reason why it wasn't just a bubble but a well played strategy is because Japan avoided entering the middle income trap. Countries like Brazil industrialise very quickly and then when people's wages become too high, they're unable to compete with similar developing countries. Japan's GDP per capita is around 40k, which is double what is required to exit the global middle class (20k), placing them firmly in the global upper class.
      So my point is, the Japanese used the situation to enter the developed world and secure itself economically. Countries that experience a bubble are unable to leverage that boon in order to succeed in the long term (Brazil being a prime example).
      Japan's stagnation is not down to a bubble ending, but a lack of good investments and innovation. There's also the major problem of a heavily ageing population that will require more and more support from the young in the coming years. It's the first time that we've seen a sufficiently advanced economy go through this situation and so it'll be the first time we see whether there is a successful method for dealing with the problem. The US uses impressive levels of immigration to make up for declining birth rates, so no problems there. Japan and China can't use immigration in the same way due to their cultures.
      Anyway, Japan should be able to survive the coming trials. China is the one that will really be in the deepest shit when their population starts decreasing rapidly due to the one child policy and then their massive investments into home ownership will cause their economy to completely spiral into doom.

    • @mk_gamíng0609
      @mk_gamíng0609 3 года назад +6

      @@Zei33 The bubble broke partly because of US intervention. The Japanese Yen was going to become more powerful than the US dollar and so some shenanigans were pulled.
      Also currently Japan wont survive
      -Massive debt
      -Rising suicide rates
      -Decreasing Birth-rates
      - Severe social issues (Sexism, lack of support for mental health. etc)
      If the suicide rates continue to rise and the birth rates fall, Japan will start to see loss of function in parts of the country
      Oh that's already happening in rural towns.
      Whats worse is that the current ruling party (The one the citizens keep voting for) don't do anything to help
      Instead of trying to solve the issues they stick there heads in the sand and ignore it.
      So no, Japan wont survive at the rate its going
      Its economy might be doing fine but guess where that wealth is?
      Not with the people
      Evidence of this?
      Most Japanese live in small homes
      Rise in the homeless population (Side note: Instead of trying to help the homeless the Government policy is to stick them where they wont be seen)

    • @Zei33
      @Zei33 3 года назад +9

      @@mk_gamíng0609 while you’re right about the debt, the suicide rates are really a non issue. You make it sound like a far bigger issue than it is. I live in Australia and our suicide rate is almost the same. We’re talking a rate of 0.012%. It’s also far lower than the US suicide rate.
      On social issues, this is very much a cause of an ageing population that doesn’t accept new ideas. I’ve spent time speaking with Japanese people from 20 to 45 years old and the younger generations are fairly enlightened. There should be a large amount of social change coming down the pipeline as the older generation phases out.
      I’m also aware that our foreign perception of the support for mental health that Japan gives is not completely accurate. I have bi polar disorder and I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to get my medication while I live in Japan. Turns out there was no problem on that front.
      Anyway, the only real issue you brought up was the debt and declining birth rates, and yes, the debt will be a major sticking point. Declining birth rates are expected to equalise eventually.
      That brings me back to my original point. Japan needs young innovators. People that can push social change and economic reform. With a new wave of progress, the country should be able to overcome the challenge ahead of them.
      They have a far better chance of weathering the coming storm than China does.

    As the famous saying goes, "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again."
    Shun is a man who never gives up. Tome and the rest of Japan needs change as the country continues to progress. As the older generations die out, it is the much younger voices that matter most now. As the youth are the ones that can make the change that Japan needs. But that change can only happen, if their voices are heard
