It's going to be fun watching these again with you, since you know them pretty well. This performance was the first time they ever sang onstage as a group of 5, which is hard to believe. The comments by all the judges, especially Ben, who is a well known singer, and music producer, they took to heart. I think it took the Trio, who had sung together for years, a few performances to trust Avi and Kevin to set the beat for each song. By the 4th or 5th performance they were a very tight group and stopped getting critical comments. super excited that you are doing this, and that you'll be doing them all 👏🏻🔥🙌🏻💖 then, to top it off, super fun, is Superfruit doing their own reaction to The Sing Off 🔥
The Sing-Off was a competition for a capella groups that ran from 2009-2014 on NBC. The first two seasons were December replacements for other NBC shows, and had 4-5 episodes. Pentatonix were on Season 3, which had eleven episodes and ran weekly from Sept-Dec 2011. There was no season in 2012, but the show came back for 2013, with seven episodes, partly due to Pentatonix's growing success at that time. 2014 there was only a single two-hour episode. I watched it from the beginning, and there were many excellent groups with different styles and numbers of members. In fact, Pentatonix did not stand out as the obvious winners, though they got the most consistent praise from the judges. Since the voting in the final episodes was a national viewer vote, it was possible they would vote for a more traditional-sounding group.
I disagree with you! They stood out for me with all the other groups racing to catch up. As you can tell, I watched the season back in 2011. PTX were very innovative and took risks which paid off extremely well. You will find yourself in a minority of probably no more than 5-10 people.
@@helenabdulah7263 Sorry I stated it badly, but what I was trying to say was that the a capella community has its own traditions and that, though the judges (and I) obviously loved Pentatonix's innovations, the people watching the show included a lot of a capella fans who might have preferred a more traditional-sounding group. You can see that difference in the comments for the top 3-4 a capella groups today, where there are decided preferences when it comes to style.
@@ruth2141I agree with this, as I was in fact a Dartmouth Aires fan when their season aired lol. I liked PTX but I think they were so different to normal a capella groups that I just went the safe route. A few years later I found their cover of Somebody That I Used To Know on RUclips and I’ve been a huge fan ever since!
I’m looking forward to the rest of their season. When you finish with PTX on The Sing Off (season 3), you should watch Home Free (season 4). I wish the show was still on. It shows true talent.
For all these videos, they are comments after the commercial break. They are great! I watch them every time, even tho I've seen it...and I actually saw it live, as well!
I watched every episode of The Sing Off that season. PTX was amazing then! So happy to see you're taking on their Sing Off performances! Whether you react on RUclips, you should listen to 1 or 2 of the competing groups to see just how PTX really went outside the a capella box! They were pioneers with this type of singing.
I’m over the moon excited you are going on the sing off journey. I watched it live that season as they competed against some giant college choral groups as well as Barber shop quartet types and a few groups more like their configuration. Viewers knew right away that PTX had won the show votes each night they performed. And they just kept getting better. Thank you for this next new series, I absolutely cannot wait because I know which songs are likely to blow your mind. Well, all of us who have seen the performances have a pretty good idea.
I enjoyed watching this with you. Thanks for starting reacting to Pentatonix Sing Off performances. Some of them will blow your mind. I'm excited for your journey. Glad that you will get to see them live in November. They are incredible live and their Holiday concert will amaze you.
Thank you for doing The SingOff! I’m here for the whole ride. I’ve watched these many times but it’s so much fun watching it again through another PENTAHOLIC reactor. Congratulations for you are a bonafide Pentaholic now. I’m sooo excited💕🤗
Yay-The Sing Off! I also think it’s good to do this journey after having a few PTX classics under your belt- makes it more unbelievable just how good/innovative they were from the beginning. 💜
Someone else probably mentioned this - in addition to the 12 performances to get to the finals, there are 2 performances during the finale after votes were cast, there is the winner’s announcement and there are a few appearances on sing-off specials. My favorite is their appearance on the season 4 finale. And there is a Superfruit episode where they watch their sing-off performances which is hilarious! Congrats on getting tickets. I saw them live for the first time last weekend and it was beyond fantastic!
Just a few notes about the show… the groups were split into 2 groups because there were so many. Pentatonix was in group B. Once about half the groups were eliminated the groups were combined. Some shows they sang one song but I think most shows they sang two songs. There was an opening number with all the groups ( Scott often had a solo in these and sometimes Kirstin had a small solo). When two groups were up for elimination, they would both sing and then the judges would determine who to eliminate. The judges did all the eliminating until the final when the public voted on the final three groups( after the judges choice 12th performance). Sam Tsui did behind the scenes interviews and fun fact the trio (Scott, Mitch and Kirstin were on an episode of the TV show Bones with Sam Tsui). The Sing Off only ran for about 5 seasons. Home Free won season 4. There are lots of people who react to PTX, but I know they are really fans when they go to their concert. I hope you enjoy it.
I watched it live and WAS blown away. I was hooked from this performance and never looked back. I’ve watched them grow up and feel like a proud Mama. I subbed for PTX and really enjoy watching your reactions. Greetings from Southern California. 👋🏼 Also, Thank you for your service.
I started watching TSO in Season 2, when I was rooting for Street Corner Symphony to win. Adam Chance, now with Home Free, was their bass singer at the time. They ended up in second place to Committed, who are still together and singing Christian music mostly. Fun fact-the first two winners of TSO were all Seventh Day Adventists, as is Kevin from PTX. Those of us watching joked when season 4 started that we should see if anyone was Seventh Day Adventist, because they would win. Turns out, not so much. Pentatonix got my attention in this first performance, but it was their fourth one that had me rooting for them to win. They were the first tv singing show competitors I ever voted for.
Asking for leave…reminds me once again to thank you for your service!🇺🇸 I know it’s cliche’, but it’s important!!! Congrats buddy, on going to see PTX…I know you’re going to have a blast! Where are you going to see them? I don’t know how many times I’ve seen their Sing Off journey and it NEVER gets old!!! I’m looking forward to joining you on their S.O. journey. They truly did come out of the gate swinging for the fences and 12 years later they’re still hitting home runs!!!
Congratulations on the tickets! The Holiday shows are really a special experience. I'm so glad you're doing the Sing Off performances. It provides a lot of insight into them as they establish what will become their PTX sound. The Sing Off is no longer on. It ran for five seasons, of which this was the third. Home Free won the fourth season and VoicePlay was also on that season. There are only a handful of top performing acapella groups, and that's three of them. Between awards, subscribers, views, sales, streams, concert tickets and everything, there is no beating Pentatonix for the top spot, but every top acapella group sort of has it's own lane. Home Free is more country, VoicePlay is more theatrical, Voctave is contemporary Christian and theater, Citizen Queen is all-female pop, etc. This is gonna be fun watching your reaction to this part of PTX's journey!
I am a little late to this party, but I love watching reactions to their Sing Off performances. They were, and are, an anomaly. The other grouos were more teaditional college type glee clubs or jazz groups. PTX were so innovative with their arrangements. Ben Brahm, I hope I spelled that right, worked for the show to help groups with arrangements. He already knew Scott. Since he is still with them, I think he had an idea of what they were destined to become. Gotta go catch up on the rest of your Sing Off videos.😊
You will love the concert!!!!! I've been to 3 regular concerts and 2 Christmas concerts. Of cours living next door to their home town means they almost always stop here every year. This week would have been another regular concert, but outside in Texas this time of year??? Sorry, at my age I'm not willing to do that. Although it was a tough decision. And what you saw of the other groups was just half of them as there were 16 groups total and they were split into two lifts. Season one a group from the Philippines called Nota won. Season two a group called Committed won. They actually formed while in college and went to the same college that Take 6 went to. Very very similar sound. PTX was the winner of Season 3, of course. And it was the year that had the most groups. Then there was a year they didn't have the show. Season 4 Home Free won. Season 5 was reduced to 1 show. Basically they didn't air all the shows and eliminations. Only showed what was, in effect, the final. Ben Folds finally got his wish that a College group won. Enjoying your reactions! Keep 'em up!
Pentatonix was definitely not a shoo-in to win, even though their talent was so evident from the beginning. Most of the competitors were bigger teams from colleges and universities who performed in the glee club or show choir tradition - lots of choreo and showy back-up harmonies with one or maybe two lead singers. There was an occasional barbershop quartet or doo wop group in the mix, but nothing else really like PTX. You could either take them as a breath of fresh air or as rebels trying to upset the a cappella world. They worked hard and smart, and they paid attention to the notes from the judges. I hope you love this look back at their beginnings. I know I did. Peace …
I love watching Babytonix, they are just sooooo friggan young and yet so massively talented already. Kirstin, Mitch and Scott were only 19 when they did this show!! Mitch skipped his graduation ceremony in order to do it as well. Mitch also referrs to this time as the 'Masc Mitch Era' because the producers on the show were always telling Mitch to 'Masc up' like, they were really not comfortable at all with Mitch and Scott's sexual orientations and later on when they do the Trevor Foundation bit - a non profit thing that helps LGBTQIA kids who are suicidal get the help they need - the producers brushed off the fact that it is a specifically LGBTQIA organization. That's why you don't see Mitch singing up in the rafters much in here - the only one where he really comes close to the Mitch Slap that we all know and love is in the last performance Dog Days Are Over, and then we get a little glimmer of the original Mitch Slap - also didn't help either that Mitch and Kirstie were both so very soft spoken at this time in their lives and not very confident either.
❤❤❤ love these, I've watched them so many times. After you finish this seasons performances, please, please, please watch when they came back on season 4......singing I Need Your Love!!!!!!!
You didn't post the link so I don't know where you got the video. If you have trouble finding a particular performance, there is a complete set on the Solenn Breizh channel -- numbered, with intros and outros. Many of the US reactors had to remove some SingOff videos last year so there are lots of broken links in older playlists.
The Solenn Breizh videos, while in HD, don't have the intros and judges' comments. I have not seen anyone who has had problems with MrDuckBear11's videos for at least six years (an eternity in Internet years), and would recommend them, because they provide important context to the performances. Something that isn't too noticeable yet but will become more so as you progress through their performances on _The Sing-Off,_ is that Mitch was being relegated to the background. This was NOT the choice of Pentatonix. It was one of their goals to introduce the world to the wonder that is Mitch Grassi's voice. Unfortunately, the producers of _The Sing-Off_ didn't share that goal. The producers were aware that both Mitch and Scott are gay; they had both come out of the closet in high school. And the producers didn't want that fact to come out on their nice "family-friendly" show, so they came up with an elaborate (and stupid) plan to keep the sexual orientation of Scott and Mitch secret. First, they supplied all the clothing the men in Pentatonix wore, for fear that Mitch and Scott would dress "too gay" (whatever that means) if left to their own devices. (And I've no idea why they put the men in pink shirts in the first performance - it's obvious that they weren't thinking clearly.) Second, they pressured Kirstie to wear more revealing clothes than she was comfortable with at the age of 19, in the hope that it might imply that she was sexually involved with one of her band mates. Third, and this is the big one, they instituted a new rule which applied only during season 3, that each band must select one person as their lead singer at the beginning of the season, and that individual had to be their lead in every performance throughout the season. And then they told Pentatonix that they didn't get to choose - their lead MUST be Scott. The reason for this was that they were afraid that if Mitch's high voice became obvious it would raise questions about his sexual orientation; Scott's baritone didn't frighten them. In case it isn't obvious, this was a continuation of the bullying Mitch had just been subjected to in high school, except this time it was being perpetrated by adults in a position of authority. And this time it was affecting Mitch's friends as well. The other bands just went along with this rule - yes, it was stupid, but what could they do but put up with it? Pentatonix, however, knew EXACTLY where it came from, and that it was directed at them, and they started looking for ways to fight back, to bend the rule. So Pentatonix started selecting songs that required two lead singers, or three, or a female lead. When they gave Mitch a solo they kept him to the lower part of his range, so as not to alarm the producers, but they were still asserting his right to sing and be heard. And as the judges began noticing how remarkable Kevin and Avi are, they gave the two of them greater roles in their performances. And strangely enough, every time Pentatonix bent the rule the judges praised their choices. And even more strangely, that praise NEVER took the form "Well, you know that technically you're violating a rule, but..." because apparently the producers had never told the judges that the rule existed (they probably knew the judges would have told them it was a bad rule). One result of this was that it gave Pentatonix an edge over the other bands, who were just going along with the rule. But even so, it put Pentatonix, and especially Scott, under a lot of stress, and appearing on _The Sing-Off_ was already stressful - the schedule was brutal. So as you follow Pentatonix on this journey, watch the choices they made with the single lead singer rule in mind. And notice how each time they bent the rule they did it in such a way that it would be very difficult for the producers to object publicly. The producers may not have been thinking clearly, but Pentatonix was applying a considerable amount of intelligence to the problem.
@@555Vibes You're welcome. Yes, it is crazy. In the first place, that isn't how vocal range works; Scott's baritone should have told them that. In the second place, all they actually NEEDED to do was ask Pentatonix to be discreet; Pentatonix would have complied. It wasn't like they were there to pick up dates, after all. But the thing I keep coming back to is just how stupid it was. It had holes you could drive a truck through, which is exactly what Pentatonix did, and despite the way Pentatonix shredded the rule they still didn't reveal that Mitch and Scott are gay, because that wasn't their goal. Nor did they reveal the bigotry of the producers to the world; the producers did that to themselves when they edited the Trevor Project footage to remove any mention of gay kids. The only conclusion I can come to is that bigotry makes people behave stupidly.
Unfortunately, Home Free was in the last season that really had several episodes spaced out for improvement. After that it went to a much less fulfilling series and there were only one or two more seasons after they won.

Oooh, 7, 10 and 12. Can’t wait!
First ever public performance as PTX. ❤❤
Babytonix! I am here for the journey 😉❤️
Thanks!
super excited that you are doing this, and that you'll be doing them all 👏🏻🔥🙌🏻💖
then, to top it off, super fun, is Superfruit doing their own reaction to The Sing Off 🔥
Oh cool! Thanks.
I’ll definitely do that. Thanks!
For all these videos, they are comments after the commercial break. They are great! I watch them every time, even tho I've seen it...and I actually saw it live, as well!
Okay thanks. Appreciate that!
_The Sing-Off_ ran for four seasons, from 2009 through 2012. Pentatonix won season 3, in 2011, and Home Free won season 4.
woohoo!!!!! Glad you are going to see them live!!! It's always a trip to see Babytonix!
Cant wait!
Thanks so much. Appreciate that.
Avi was really showing off his overtone singing on this one, even going up close to his whistle voice.
I enjoyed watching this with you. Thanks for starting reacting to Pentatonix Sing Off performances. Some of them will blow your mind. I'm excited for your journey. Glad that you will get to see them live in November. They are incredible live and their Holiday concert will amaze you.
I can’t wait!!
Thanks and I’m definitely going to check out the season 4 performance.
That’s awesome they were on that show! Thanks for the info.
I watched it live and WAS blown away. I was hooked from this performance and never looked back. I’ve watched them grow up and feel like a proud Mama. I subbed for PTX and really enjoy watching your reactions. Greetings from Southern California. 👋🏼 Also, Thank you for your service.
Thanks Tammy
Congrats buddy, on going to see PTX…I know you’re going
to have a blast!
Thanks Tim. I’ll be in California during that time so tickets and timing worked out great!
Thanks so much!
I’m so excited that you’re doing the sing off performances!!!
Me too!
They were the youngest and smallest group.
Thanks! 🙂
I really can’t wait to see them, thanks for the comment.
Peace …
Thanks, I already do!
Great reaction. Thanks.
Ohhh, yes thank you.
Yay! I'm so glad you're doing the Singoff so fun. I am looking forward to watching your PTX reaction to the Singoff..
Thanks!
Love that you’re doing these❤️❤️🇨🇦 great reaction
Thanks!
I watched all of the shows. Home Free won the last season it appeared on TV.
When you finish these, you might want to watch The Sing-Off performances for Home Free and VoicePlay, too.
Definitely am!!
I definitely will! Thanks.
Great
HomeFree also got their start on the Sing Off...
I’m definitely going to watch the home free season.
You didn't post the link so I don't know where you got the video. If you have trouble finding a particular performance, there is a complete set on the Solenn Breizh channel -- numbered, with intros and outros. Many of the US reactors had to remove some SingOff videos last year so there are lots of broken links in older playlists.
Thanks, I’ll go to that one.
The Solenn Breizh videos, while in HD, don't have the intros and judges' comments. I have not seen anyone who has had problems with MrDuckBear11's videos for at least six years (an eternity in Internet years), and would recommend them, because they provide important context to the performances. You might consider doing double-header reactions to some of the performances (especially #7) with MDB11 and SB), but the MDB11 videos are the way to go.
@@UserHorologium I don't know what to say. I, also, relied on Mrduckbear11 for years until last year when some of the videos were just gone. I just went there to re-check and I'm still not seeing them. Six of the original twelve judged performances (4,5,6,8,10 and 12) are no longer on his page, and other US reactors are also missing them. And I haven't watched all the Solenn Breizh, but the ones I've watched have intros and outros and by the length I assume the others do as well.
(And I've no idea why they put the men in pink shirts in the first performance - it's obvious that they weren't thinking clearly.)
Second, they pressured Kirstie to wear more revealing clothes than she was comfortable with at the age of 19, in the hope that it might imply that she was sexually involved with one of her band mates.
Wow, that’s crazy. Thanks for sharing that.
Got a song suggestion by a band The Cranberries - "animal instinct" and "dreams" :)
Thanks! Appreciate that.
@@555Vibes you're wellcome
