Mod: www.moddb.com/...
Voice over work done by Mike Hillard of Black Mesa fame. Go check out his website it's neat. (onlyintheory.com/)
Intro music made by the Golf Cheat BavonZF.
Also I forgot to say it in the video but thank you as well to all the kind people in the maplabs discord for helping me with figuring out the hammer editor.
Because youtube has now started scanning descriptions for song titles I can't just post a list but if you were to replace all all the # symbols with A's you'd get the songs. (FILL THIS IN LATER FUTURE JOLLY)
I may have slightly under estimated how long it takes to learn to use SFM and the Hammer editor.
Also a question I'll answer pre-emptively:
Q: Didn't you already play this?!
A: Technically yes, 8 years ago I did "play" this but to be honest those old videos were mostly just me no clipping to the mildly entertaining parts while watching youtube in the background. All my reactions in this are genuine, I had basically zero recollection of this mod. The only parts I remembered clearly were the lift falling down, bolder at the start of the training and the end of the sky tower. All half life mods have basically blended together in my head as a sort of amorphous soup at this point.
Also if you're wondering about all the doors I didn't try and open or places I seemed not to explore you've got to remember I had chat guiding me for most of this. I did explore way more than is show in the video but I do a lot of editing to make things look seamless.

35:30 the entirety of this psrt
There is just an inhuman amount of effort in these subtitles.
Who asked pizznitch 😂😂😂
It approaches SovietWomble-levels of detail, which is amazing.
I love how this mod has some of the most visually impressive and satisfying set-pieces made in Goldsource.
And it's in THIS MOD.
echoes win for best set piece in gold src ngl
Echoes is quite literally PEAK of Gold Source visuals
Fun fact: Both this mod and Echoes require max_edicts to be raised to prevent a crash. In HC2 the crash occurs while trying to load the tram maze. (EDIT: The 25th anniversary patch raises max_edicts by default, so this now only applies to the legacy builds.)
This mod that would filter most people out in the first hour.
I always had a fascination with the way the set pieces are built in GoldSrc ever since playing a lot of custom maps in Team Fortress Classic so this mod in particular got my interest to put up with how unforgiving it was.
The reactor especially was the most impressive for how realistic it looked compared to the actual Half-Life franchise.
I liked the part where Jolly spent 5 minutes trying to get past the moving train only to destroy the train making the tunnel explorable only to lose interest and never check it out.
Yes.
Yeah that was pretty disappointing
And later he finds the secret under the speed test, which told him exactly how to complete the rail maze and forgot about it 😂
ADHD moment
For that scene I was instantly reminded of the Blood 2 review from Civvie11
To quote:
"Last time someone to kill him on a train, he killed the train"
The amount of time it took the dev to make this map is equivalent to the amount that it took for Jolly to make this vid. Yet both are hilariously funny
i like to think that this mod is set in a black mesa that wasnt nuked and where everyone just hunkered down and continued doing their thing despite the earth being completely besieged by combine forces

This was absolute comedy GOLD. Normally when I watch a video, especially one this long, it gets a bit overplayed and kind of old. Shoutout to Jolly for not using AI voices, and instead getting a chad to do the voices for this thing. We love to see it.

That's what all content makers should do!

some people don't have such contacts or money to do it
This is absolutely one of those cases where an AI voice would have been acceptable, given this whole thing is a one man show, which frankly makes going to extra miles to get a proper VA *rad*.
@@Detahramet The video didn't *need* a VA to do this, though. At worst, Jolly could've just done an impression himself, scuffed as it might be. Using other people's likeness without consent shouldn't be seen as acceptable, especially in a production that'll likely earn money. If a VA is okay with AI? Go ham! For anyone who wants to try this mod but is put off by the tram car maze that Jolly got stuck on for an hour, here's some advice for completing it (relatively) painlessly:
1) the code Jolly finds at 1:32:17 is actually the sequence of turns you need to make to reach the exit. Only the intersections that allow you to change directions count.
2) if you'd rather not remember the code, there's an easier way to keep track of where to go: whenever you reach an intersection **always** change the direction. If I'm not mistaken, this will always put you in the right direction. If it doesn't, mindlessly doing this is still a foolproof strategy, as going the wrong direction will simply loop you back around.
3) despite what the narrator says, there's nothing stopping you from parking the tram right next to the button (and therefore, on the tracks that are supposed to shift). Doing so just causes your tram to course-correct as soon as it starts moving again, immediately locking onto whichever track you've set it to regardless of which one it started on. Doing this is a good way to avoid the many falling deaths and electrocution damage.
4) upon entry and exit of the maze, set the tram to go slow, as this will significantly reduce the odds of the physics glitching out and making you take damage when the tram turns 90 degrees vertically
Do you know if economy mode in the maintenance room turns off the electrocution damage of the track allowing you to scout out your route?
@@CowCommando I never ended up finding that secret, so I don't know, but I'd assume that's what it does.
@@CowCommando It's been a while since I've played, but from what I recall yes. I'll double-check with the official walkthrough and confirm.
EDIT: Yep. The walkthrough is in german, but I translated and confirmed that economy power turns off the electric damage.
@@YesterdaysMinder Thanks for the follow-up.
The easiest way to get through the tram car maze is to pay attention and if you see a button immediately stop the tram and go and press it, you need to press every button once to reach the end, also be sure to hop on the front of the train once you see the climb to the end and be careful if you hear the jumping sound being spammed as you'll take massive fall damage if you let it go on for too long.
35:30 that whole part IS crazy, UP until you leave thé room your having a full blown conversation with the scientist and the guard, it's really crazy how well that works
I love how the secrets all make the challenges easier but not trivial - it's clear a lot of love went into this mod! Loved the SFM segments as well, they really tied the whole thing together
Respect for going out of your way to learn SFM. You’ve done a really nice job already.
The animation is simple, but it came out great despite of that!

I don't watch Twitch and not a fan of unedited streams, so thank you to those who do love them supporting Jolly live on the regular. Because my goodness do I love these edited videos and happy anytime there's a return to youtube.
Jolly is a great entertainer and excellent editor. The man is an expert of the cut, whether it thinking about the overall flow or perfect comedy timing. The subtitles, the SFM additions, the music. It's invisible work but Jolly does it so damn well and I appreciate all these videos because of that work, elevating the piece.
I mean I just watched a movie length piece and felt entertained throughout.
I appreciate the amount of time you took to properly mask/occlude the scientist and Barneys floating text behind the bars

It's great to have you back Jolly! I've missed the well edited boobery of this channel.
Hehe boobery
Well worth all the effort that went into this, I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it. Having some experience in SFM myself, it's no small feat what you managed to accomplish. The writing and scenes for the SFM moments fit perfectly and made the whole thing even better. Thank you for the joy & laughs, the Barney obby was my favorite part.
as somebody who loves editing in those types of subtitles (lacking masking and 3D transforms, but I do do the 2D motion tracking by hand), I know that took a hot minute. Even if you used motion tracking software to do it for you, still things like masking and the 3D rotation are not easily automated. Also, it's _really_ nicely timed with the speaking, great job on that!
This video is the last thing I expected for his return. Thanks for giving me PTSD of this mod.
Also good job with the SFM stuff, I'd say all that learning was worth it :)
