I can't believe it, the incredible Voltaire doesn't know his string names, nor can he play barre chords. This gives me even more respect for him, I've studied jazz theory and I dream of writing talent like this. You have inspired me even more! I now know it's not all about what's "correct" and it's all about what sounds good haha.
So he allows people to use his music in their college projects for free, will post his songs on his RUclips to listen to for free and even teaches people how to play them with free lessons -- Voltaire is a man of the people!
This was one of the first Voltaire songs I ever heard back when my friend introduced me in 2004 (the other being The Headless Waltz). I don't play guitar but I'll watch these videos just to listen to live acoustic versions of the songs.
Well, iTunes Germany would be a good place to get them, but it that's no good for you, you can go to cdbaby(dot)com/artist/Voltaire1 and get MP3s there. Thanks for your support! Also, I just signed a deal with the German label Afmusic so soon they will have my CDs in Germany!
One of my favorite songs ever :) so simple but yet so great... If you don't want to tune your guitar down, just play Gm instead of Am and Dm instead of Em
Voltaire you've got me motivated to learn how to play guitar. I have played a bit piano before but never guitar so I have asked my dad if he would learn it to me and now I'm trying hard to get that chords finaly right. Thank you very much for making this videos Voltaire.
Yup now I feel old. I'm not even that old but I remember getting the devils bris when it came out. I also had this song on within this infinite ocean by projekt.
Herzeleid I think I get it. It’s a one-and-two three-and-four pattern for the beginning, or down-up-down up-up-down, and then for the staccato part for the verse it’s just hard strums down on the quarter beats
My guitar teacher used to get really upset with me because I couldn't do bar chords right... Now I don't need to!! I've been dying to play your songs but I could never find them. Thank you so much!!! :)
@VoltaireMusicPage I would pay you all of my money! Also, it's a testament to your writing abilities to make such a great song with only two guitar chords. One of my favorites of yours. Just great. See you in Melbourne ;)
I think this song is one of my favorites. I hum it quite frequently at work. I sang it at a friend when she asked me what I was humming.....she was a little taken aback by the lyrics. SO therefor I just hum, apparently people don't take quite well to songs about killing when your decorating a birthday cakes....
I love your music!!! Either Feathery Wings or Anastasia would be lovely. Any chance that we can also get violin tabs for songs with violin in them in the future?
@hellsvortex It's a doll I made in my book Paint It Black: A Guide to Gothic Homemaking. In the book, I teach how to make a Goth doll from a regular baby doll.
I was just trying to remember who Voltaire's lover was, because I love some of Emilie Du Chatelet's writings, now I get to learn guitar! Wooho. Thank you.
Voltaire, this video was amazing.-I didn't think you quite realize how so! - What you've done is shown how incredibly easy to write and play a song.-And I think getting the confidence to TRY to play is 75%of the battle with playing an instrument, because once you've actually gotten motivated,THEN come the technical skills and songs.-So thank you very much for this little lesson, you made it seem so logically easy,so I want to try it,then get going on making my own simple stuff, then harder stuff :)
Mr.Voltaire, I just want you to know that I love you, and your music, after I discovered it from watching The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, and am looking forward to more in the future.
I would love to have you show us how to play Goodnight Demonslayer. I loooooove that song so much. One of my favorites. That or Beast of Pirates Bay. The chords sound simple enough and is probably my second favorite song by you.
It's so amazing to finally find this video. I'm a huge fan, and always have been. I'd been playing this with an E tuning and using some complex chords, so it's good to know that it's a D tuning. Thanks, Voltaire, you're my favorite!
Do you have also "How to play - The night"? I was looking tab or chords everywhere I can`t find it :( It`s one of my favourite song and I wish to learn how to play this. To be honest do I don`t event want video. I just need to know which chords are in this song and that`s all i need to know.
Hey Voltaire, I'm a fan and hats off, you role =) A song I wasn't able to figure out on my own how to play, or even find any tabs on the internet is the CRUSADE. I think its your best song and I would be delighted if you could share how it goes with us! Thanks and just to compliment, this vlog thing is AWSOME!
as soon as I saw the title of this vid I ran and grabbed my guitar. Also, we'll let it slide that you can't "read guitar." In fact, that makes it all the more impressive. Voltaire does it original "jazz" style...played by ear, not by notation and algorithms and music theory and all that jazz...just straight up good old fashion playing it by feel. I hope you're happy V. Do you know how long that took me to tune that by ear, because I don't know where my tuner is. ANASTASIA, please!
watcvhing these are awesome to me since you're one of my influences to learning acoustic guitar been watching your vids for about a weeks playing nothing but yours and Ghost mice's song
Nice. Now I jut have to get a guitar again... never was good at that instrument. Might do a cover on the trumpet but then I think I'll need a few other cords (another song) Since it's hard to play the trumpet and sing at the same time :-P I'd like to learn how to play "The Beast of Pirate Bay" Love your music and keep up the great work!
I'm going to be completely honest here. I only play piano and clarinet. But I am going to watch every last video, because you're funny, you tell about experiences in your life, and let's all face it, you're just the yummiest alive. And may I ask a question? Will you ever have Jayme on again? I loved her in your Halloween video.
I don't suppose you have sheet music regarding the violins. I really really really really really really really love the strings in your songs and I'm learning how to play the violin so I would really x10 love to learn how to play "When You're Evil".
Can you please make a 'How to play' video for Anniversary? It's the most beautiful song I have ever heard... maybe a few from your 'Hate Lives in a Small Town" album, too!!
I love you, like for reals. Your videos are all awesome, you're a silly dude. Oh, and not to mention that your music is amazing. Thanks for the tutorial!♥
voltaire me and a friend are wanting to learn the night she's got the violin and me the guitar I was wondering if you could give me some tips on the cords and such
Would love to hear how you play Zombie Prostitute. One of my mine and my boyfriend's favourite songs of yours. Also out of curiosity, have you considered coming across the pond to play to your lovely British fans? :) We would love to see you in concert if we ever got the chance! Much love and enjoying the "how to videos" Florence x
@Budegadomarco Were you paying attention? @VoltaireMusicPage said the song is E minor in D (D minor) and A minor in D (G minor). If you play piano you might want to look into music theory and learn to play chords. It's really the same thing as learning it from him on guitar except you're ignoring the tablature he shows and just playing the chords he says. It couldn't be more simple, bro.
another question.. could you pleeeaaase load up some violin sheets some day, too? I always try to hear them myself, but some songs are difficult to hear out...
It's so weird seeing you sing, and play, and talk... I think about meeting you sometimes, but it's still weird confining all that genius into a body and realizing you're a human like us... Sorry if I freak you out, I love your work! XD
I always hoped you would do this. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU SO MUCH! Can you please show how to play Goodnight Demon Slayer. I love that song! It's so beautiful.
Odd request, but at some point before November this year, could one for the Headless Waltz be uploaded? A friend of mine is contemplating singing it at our school, but with no instrumental track 'tis impossible. With this, all she'd need is to find a guitarist. XD
man i just got my guitar, it's hard playing this songs, i don't really know how to down step and pluck the strings while changing from e minor and A minor is hard i wish i knew how to pluck the strings from one note to another
Damn I can't believe Voltaire teaches you how to play Voltaire.... nice guy!
Sitting here eating pizza while this beautiful man sings and stares at me. I love it. Keep being you, Voltaire!
I love that he's so humble about his guitar knowledge
I can't believe it, the incredible Voltaire doesn't know his string names, nor can he play barre chords. Tuning
1 - D
2 - A
3 - F
4 - C
5 - G
6 - D
Not quite.
It is exactly like that. It is really not very hard to understand that.
wtf58 Just wanna say that's from highest to lowest. Usually I hear it recommended as lowest to highest
MVP energy, right here!
Thanks for your support! ; )
I love your little bun. It's quite adorable
It's been 10 years, still one of My favorite songs
Voltaire rockin' the man bun before it was cool
Can I just express how much I love your voice?
You've a brilliant voice. Talking or singing. Your voice is just nice to hear.
This is one of my favorite songs by Voltaire! I love the cello solo
Lair of Voltaire, love the sound of that!
This is so cool. That guitar looks so cool. Yay to go for the first episode.
It's great how this song is so simple, but it's also SO AMAZING, one of my favorites of all your discography
I'm a HUGE fan of yours, man!!
When you're evil!!! I'd so love to know how to play that...
Well, iTunes Germany would be a good place to get them, but it that's no good for you, you can go to cdbaby(dot)com/artist/Voltaire1 and get MP3s there. Thanks for your support!

One of my favourite songs.
The guitar is simple, but it fits perfectly with the violin and lyrics~
Voltaire you've got me motivated to learn how to play guitar. I have played a bit piano before but never guitar so I have asked my dad if he would learn it to me and now I'm trying hard to get that chords finaly right. Thank you very much for making this videos Voltaire.

@AmyLeerae YES! You can always cover my songs! ; )
its been 5 years and i cant get the damn strum pattern :(
Herzeleid I think I get it. It’s a one-and-two three-and-four pattern for the beginning, or down-up-down up-up-down, and then for the staccato part for the verse it’s just hard strums down on the quarter beats
I’m so shocked at how....soft...Voltaire is....this is the first time I’ve seen him as a person, and oh god,,, he’s a baby
@loserraver YES! I shot this one on the Cannon 7D and just used the built in mic. Not bad!
Anastasia would be great song to be on the next of this series. I enjoy the chords and the intro/outro guitar work on this song very much.
My guitar teacher used to get really upset with me because I couldn't do bar chords right... Now I don't need to!! I've been dying to play your songs but I could never find them. Thank you so much!!! :)
@VoltaireMusicPage I would pay you all of my money!

We are waiting for you here in Brazil, soon, soon! Pretty cool
@TheBrotherSilent uh, seeing my ex lover with her new lover.
@TheReggaeMortis Sorry, I only have one. But if I can find the master, I'll put it on iTunes.
Wooho. Thank you.
i am SO excited you're getting involved in the youtube community! Thank you for your fantastic efforts!
@VoltaireMusicPage awesome, bro, I'll practice it and upload as soon as I can record!
@AQWThatWeirdNoob You can ALWAYS play my songs at school or use them in any performance or indie film or theater project!!!
It's so wonderful that you're taking time to do all of this. ^w^ Your fans love you for it.
mmm, Dunce could be interesting to learn! thanks for much for sharing your music with us, bro!
@LearsiLys "This Sea" is pretty simple. i figured it out by ear.
Dm,G7 , Gm, A7, Dm
Basically you have to switch them around in the song.
@Budegadomarco I don't play piano so I'm afraid there won't be any of those videos.
Mr.Voltaire, I just want you to know that I love you, and your music, after I discovered it from watching The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, and am looking forward to more in the future.
Voltaire you are amazing! I wish I could find more bass work by you though! I love your stuff man, I love you dude!!
@crimsonwerecat I dont' see why not! ; )

Same here , have been looking forever to find a single thing , and found nothing at all.
@ArcticLight89 Sorry, I don't have ANY sheet music for any of the instruments. : (
Hey Voltaire, I'm a fan and hats off, you role =) A song I wasn't able to figure out on my own how to play, or even find any tabs on the internet is the CRUSADE. I think its your best song and I would be delighted if you could share how it goes with us! Thanks and just to compliment, this vlog thing is AWSOME!
This is awesome, thanks Voltaire!
Oh, and hurry back to Seattle!
I don't know how I missed seeing this! Getting my guitar out asap!
as soon as I saw the title of this vid I ran and grabbed my guitar.
Thanks :)
Just bought a few MP3s from cdbaby.
I can't wait to see your CDs in a record store.

💗💗💗💗💗
Voltaire, I haven't picked up my guitar in two years. It is tuned and next to me right now. Turns out I really like the guitar. ^^
I, myself, would like to learn another song off the same album, "The Chosen"... I truly enjoy hearing it.
Love the instruction.
Can you please do Ravensland next?
watcvhing these are awesome to me since you're one of my influences to learning acoustic guitar been watching your vids for about a weeks playing nothing but yours and Ghost mice's song
I love this!!! Your an amazing teacher...

And now I know what to do with my guitar :D
Seriously though, this video was amazing, love your songs, keep it up!
The manbun fits you, though I never thought I'd see you pull out something like that after that triangle-shavy period, lol!
When you're evil or Anastasia! pleaseee
I don't suppose you have sheet music regarding the violins. I really really really really really really really love the strings in your songs and I'm learning how to play the violin so I would really x10 love to learn how to play "When You're Evil".

...You seriously are my #1 favorite artist x3..
Also, typically, strings, as with other pitches, are written in ascending order. Hope that helps.
Epic!!! Thanksss! Can't wait to see what other songs you upload!!
I love you, like for reals. Your videos are all awesome, you're a silly dude. Oh, and not to mention that your music is amazing.
Thanks for the tutorial!♥
Pleaaaase teach us "The Night" and "Crusade"! Those songs have really fun guitar...that I can't figure out by ear...
And here I thought that a video like this might be reserved for particularly difficult songs... Damn. Keep being you, you handsomely bearded devilkin!
Hi! I tried to play this song, but i'm kind of struggling with the strum pattern. Could anyone help me?
Thank you sooooo much. I LOVE this song and was curious about how to play it. You're wonderful, by the way. X)

Could you ever show sheet music for your music, especially for the vocal line? I play violin, and would love to play your music.
You are so amazing! the perfect man
Ohh how I miss yours videos
another question.. could you pleeeaaase load up some violin sheets some day, too? I always try to hear them myself, but some songs are difficult to hear out...
