- The Future Rock Star's Handbook: How to Start and Maintain a Successful Career in Music or the Arts!
Hi, I'm Aurelio Voltaire. I have been making a living from my music and art for about twenty years. I'm not super rich, I'm not super famous, but apparently you don't have to be in order to be able to pay your rent and your bills doing what you love. I've toured America, Canada, Europe, Australia and Russia several times over. I've released eleven studio albums and I've written some songs for the Cartoon Network show, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy and some video games. Why am I telling you all of this? Because if this sounds appealing to you, I think I can probably help you to achieve something similar, or at least share my experience in the hopes that it will help you with your own music career!
Unlike a lot of other fellows out there, I'm not asking you for your money... this isn't some kind of scam, I honestly just want to share some of the things I've learned in the hopes that it might help you achieve your dreams as well! And I'm doing it right here on RUclips.
So, if you're an aspiring musician, sit back, relax and hopefully there will be something in this vlog that you will find helpful.
If you are interested in hearing my music, you can hear damn near all of it here on my channel as I upload it myself!

"Keeping it family friendly" Goes on to describe someone putting shit in their mouth.
I love ya, Voltaire. Never change.
Thank you. I'm sitting here, at a job I loathe, and feeling pretty bad about myself and my art. Recently, I had some rejections and began questioning (again) if I should even go on writing. I go to RUclips and boom. This helped me so much today.
Wow; I remember you being so handsome when I was younger, and you've just gotten better with age omg.
I love how the music changed when he got to the delete and block part. The mood change was humorous to me.
#3 Professional Poop Sniffers. By far the best description!
As a dark writer, I needed this and it perked me up. It's tough dealing with the fear of your work not being good enough and ultimately be rejected by your target demographic or community - but it's more grating when people who don't find some styles to be their cup of tea nitpick your work and tell you to change it.
Haters are everywhere, in every sphere of life. I do like your tips on dealing with them because those tips are empowering. I never cared about haters but now, I will be able to handle them with something other than dumb silence.
Looking Alive in white.
It all boils down to self hate, and Jealousy. Yr doing u, keep on.
Long-time fan, first-time commenter (The Headless Waltz & Chi-Chian sealed the deal way back when.) I've been a singer-songwriter in some form of another for the past decade, and everything you've outlined in your video series has been exactly my experience. So validating. Feels good, man.
OMG! I laughed so hard about the poop thing! you are a true Entertainer thank you for your wonderful art I think you're awesome!
He has a beautiful soul and aura
Fantastic video! really enjoyed the poop sniffer section :)
Very wise words, delivered as always with intelligence and humor! I find you so entertaining and wonderful. And I know this will help some of those fledgling rock stars!
OMGoth!! Great attitude!! "A turd that won't flush." That's gonna be my new mantra lol! Thank you thank you thank you!!!!!
Voltaire, I just wanna say THANK. YOU. For the advice you gave us in this video. It took me such a long time to realize that point that nothing is for everyone, and it is the most liberating thing ever. I'm gonna keep on keeping on. Cheers! --DJ Starhop
Your, Sir, are a genius! Sadly, I've only just discovered your channel last week. I've been binge watching since then! Very entertaining, keep up the good work!
Great video and great information, really helps. . Thank you, sir ^_^ you have a great day x
yasss grrreat video :P
Lmfao at that "poop" segment >O< xD 4 videos in and so far you've really shined a light on things that I eagerly needed to know. Thank you, very much.
Dear Voltaire,
These are some really insightful things, things that we may already know or have been told about in one way or the other, things that exist at the back of our heads. But you've expressed them in a better way, in the best way ever encountered -at least for me. Very much the same with how your music looks (in my head), how it sounds and how it feels, not a single line is wasted.
It's always an eye-opener, always inspiring, always thought-provoking, always animated and evocative. It's been a couple of months since I've been listening to you, and it's been maybe a year since I stumbled on "When you're evil." I love your music, I love how it's as empathetic as you are, I love the way it sounds and feels, and even the songs I'm not so crazy about, it grows on me --appreciating what's expressed, the meaning, how the song can move and sway... I'd just be like going about life and then suddenly... "Hmm, this situation reminds of that one song I heard about Voltaire... Should re-listen to it."
You're awesome~ My parents don't like me singing to you~ My neighbors hate me singing your songs (then again they already just hate me *shrugs*)~ Everyone else thinks I'm worshiping the devil when they hear the violins, the dark overtones, that sweet alluring tempting voice blasting on full volume speakers ----often mistaken for as some vampire or Lucifer himself.
Glad I stumbled on your songs on youtube, and helps me get through my days. I love that they're so meaningful and that they speak to me. Thank you for doing what you do, for your music, your voice, your words and who you are. Thanks for existing.
This video really helped a lot, and has only made me love you and your music even more.
P.S.
Sorry for the long read.
Your music (amongst others), sunsets, and sweets are good reasons for immortality~
Thank you for another great video. You're so eloquent. :)
Great! Thanks a lot for sharing your experiences :D You're awesome :)
BTW, I think some trolls just want attention. Maybe once they said "hey, you rock!" and they felt ignored.... and they become monsters! So, if you answer them, even to argue, they feel not-ignored and that reinforce their bad attitude... So delete and block is also a way of helping them to change a bad habit (not that you care, LOL) :)
love you Voltaire your such an inspirational guy and I love your style so much!!!!!!!!!!!
These vids have been really inspirational. So much that I even got emotional at parts. Although I was laughing so hard at the poop sniffers part I had to pause the video!
Voltaire: what's your reason
me: self amusement
"Believe in me who believes in you." (Sorry for the Gurren Lagann quote..)
I'll have to keep #3 in mind. There are so many people on the internet that do that, it's sometimes hard to remember that they aren't the ones that matter.
I'm not doing art for a living but it is a hobby that means a lot to me and which I sadly have neglected the past few years. The best person for constructive negative criticism has been my boyfriend. I sometimes get the feeling I do so much wrong in my work but looking back I do see how I've improved thanks to that criticism.
So, thanks for these videos and thanks for your other awesome creations! :)
every great tip for people that what to do awesome and amazing things in their life, hope you make video like this
Mr Voltaire, I have a question: Those things, tips you have said in the video, can it be referred as well to literature, poems and translation too? I myself am not a good musician, but can create some weird lyrics, and not sure if it is worth it to read it.
I'm certain that the advice in this video can be applied to all forms of art. Write the lyrics, the more you write, the more you improve.
If this helps at all ... I greatly appreciate and enjoy your work and I love Gothic Homemaking!
Searia from Calgary Alberta CANADA.
Love that axe necklace. I appreciate a lot of what you say. I am making an album now, and I expect a lot of criticism, mainly because it is so unusual that many people might not know how to take it in. It has taken a very long time to make, and is deeply personal to me. I actually don't know if I'm going to make any money on this, but I know it needs to be shared, on the off chance there is a hurting, isolated twelve-year old girl who feels similarly to the way I did at her age. That alone will be worth it. I just want to make music that resonates with my soul, with the vision I have had for many years. I really like your work and think a lot of it is very fun. Thank you for encouraging other musicians.
That was a good video! Not only is it good for aspiring artists and musicians but for everyone.
Great words I admire your wisdom 😘❤️
Another great episode! This is such a great topic to talk about because there millions of people out there that just want to bring you down and do nothing to help you or your cause. But, like you said if you love what you do and are passionate about it then never pay them any mind. But, hitting the delete and block button on those poop sniffers help too lol thanks man!
professional shot sniffers? what ever could you mean Voltaire
so positive and inspiring :) thank you
Every time my dog hears the chimes in your video music he goes nuts because he thinks it's the doorbell
Wow this was awesome 🤘🏼 some excellent advice, that pertains to art and music and even far beyond. I really liked all the points that you made and they were all very relevant. Thank you for making this video. I love your work, keep it up! Your videos are always so much fun and entertaining.😄🤘🏼🎶💕
Topic - Tips for being on the road on tour. I'm sure you have some great stories you can also share.
That is definitely a future vlog!
Sometimes i deal with those people who said that my art sucks or boring, That was pretty hard for me to think positive but now you made me view it different. You are right that its not for everyone. Thank you very much for making me feel much better c:
you are awesome!
Awesome to see you putting more videos out lately, I hope to see you at dragoncon this year!
I think your music, arts and everything are amazing for me! You have inspired me in many, MANY diffrents ways, and gave me alot of creative ideas. So thank you ^^
Really helpful and inspiring man, thanks for making these videos. And as silly as it may sound, thank you for your closing message, really helps to hear.
thank you, this was very valuable. LOVE YOU Voltaire
I just want to say that I like your music so much. You make a great work. Ty
:D Thank You So Much! I am aspiring to share my art with the world, and I'm scared shitless cuz even my supports don't seem interested--but I'm also only able to recreate music from other artists (I can't seem to make my own material yet) or my drawings from my high school days (when I was most creative). However, your video (and the subsequent ones; this was the first, I intend to watch and support the others =^_^= ) has given me strength and inspiration to live my dream--no matter who likes it or doesn't. I will now see negative criticism in a whole different way--I will use it to push me to succeed because I know Someone, Somewhere, would want to hear it--needs it, perhaps. Thank you for the support, and Cheers! *raising coffee cup* Here's to the supporters and friends, haters and shit sniffers. Thanks for the support, however you choose to give it.
Have a wonderful day, man! 💚 ~Angel
I'm shallow. You're most beautiful man I've ever seen. And wise too.
Thank you Voltaire so much! Your advices helps me a lot!
This is all really powerful stuff. Thanks V!
Watching this vlog was like listening to a friend with similar experiences, refreshing and comforting. Thank you.
thank you for making this video Voltaire. we have people that say very bad things about us. for no good reason. it helps to know that everyone hears bad things sometimes. your awesome!!! :)
The Block Hammer is beautiful thing.
Just watched this brilliant series of four videos again. Thank you. Hope we will get some more one day.
Life and career thoughts from my long term inspiration Voltaire? YES! Thanks for the video, it has great advice for me as an artist.
I'm not a musician in the least, and I'll admit that I'm loving this particular series to pieces! I'm actually a comic book artist, and am slowly working on getting my work out there, and though it doesn't involve music or performances, so much of this information is still incredibly helpful! Thanks for making this vlog series, it's actually really helping to prepare me for all of the trials and tribulations ahead, and getting me really excited as well! You're a great inspiration to us all~ =D
Solid advice. I also realized that I'm not making my music for "everyone." I'm making it for the people that I know will "get it" and enjoy it. Those are the people I want to reach. :-)
Great stuff Voltz... I see you ended with the surfer (also ukulele) shaka sign! Cool!
This is honestly solid life advice here.
That was very interesting, thank you.
Voltaire, man, in that white suit you REALLY look like the Devil. For some reason. I don't know what it is. It's amazing.
I love the series! can you give advice about how to handle some of the financial and legal stuff i.e. making contact agreements, paying someone for their work, copyrighted work, etc.? I think that would be really helpful. Thanks!
You're the best.
greetings from Egypt : )
New Internet Game...
"Whack A Troll"
Where did you get that adorable black doll behind you? I love it! I would love one!!! Where can I buy one?
Fabuloso🖤 ,me encanta ,mis respetos siempre ⚘ 🦇
You Sir Are The Master \m/
Haters need a life instead of using all there energy on hate
Love this !
Helpful and so so funny
hey Voltaire, awesome series! a totally unrelated question: what is the name of the beard style you so regally sport? I'm thinking of grooming it a bit differently soon, and I think I'll try to see if it works on me. Saludos! :D
I have no idea. Maybe I'll call it a "Voltaire" LOL!
René Jiménez I'd call it a fragmented duck tail
One person doesn't like your criticisms of criticism. I love it.
I'm guessing they get deleted and blocked A LOT. LOL!
This should have been named How to Deal with Trolls on net :D
Amazing series, I love it. I'd be interested in knowing how you'd advise keeping your art choice "fresh" and not perceived as "the same shit repeated again." Also, sort of the same thing, keeping yourself floating, instead of sinking like a stone.
Did you ever hear Red Skelton's method of dealing with True Haters? He had a roll top desk with a dedicated drawer, in which he kept a small notebook and pen. He would take this beautiful pen, carefully write down their name put the paper back into the drawer, and from that moment on, he treated them as tho they we're dead. As in, when their name came up, he said a short nice thing about them ( because one should never speak ill of the Departed), but they never connected or influenced his life after that. That man was truly awesome, and considering the length of his career in show-business, I figure he saw his share of hecklers and poisonous persons.
You can be the sweetest peach but there's always somebody that don't like peaches
I'll be real. The last time I saw you was 2013 Steampunk World's fair. You were sort of really drunk and you had a jug of Bacardi on yourself almost always, very out of it, you were grizzley and terrifying to approach. I brought along some art, I drew a Fat Unicorn and (being the little artist I was) thought I could give it to you. Instead it was signed and you turned around and were POOF. Gone. I thought "Man, that guy was a DOUCHE" BUT-- I swear this comment is a nice one: You've turned around completely. I LOVE the new music. I love the look, I love these videos sooo much and I pass them about my artist community. It covers music yeah, but a lot of this covers a lot of forms of art. It covers many subjects and professions and I'm not as well worded as you are when trying to explain these things. Thank you for the dog crap analogy as well, it's a perfect explanation. Super happy to see you around. :)
Honestly, if I were that drunk, I wouldn't have signed it at all (and it would have been illegible). I'd cal that nice lol.
How could anyone seek out Voltaire for any other reason than his songs and music are unique, and he is hawt as hell..... Ah well not everyone likes Voltaire...... More for me to enjoy ^_^ I mean its not a matter if it isn't gray, and you wont think twice after hes eaten your brains!!
That moment I really want to send someone a message about how bad their music is just to see what that message says... Just because I'm that curious lolz.
Seriously tho... Really love these videos. I find them so helpful even tho I'm not a musician ^_^"
From a different perspective all together- I think everyone's had a poop or a toot that smelled so foul that you called your friends/family over to smell it. "OMG did that come out of me?? Oh man, that's awful! Do you smell it? You gotta get a whiff of this! What the heck did I eat???"
Cant help but laugh throughout the video xD
A Hypnotic Clam Bake reference! Woohoo!
Ever valid and insightful always. I'd lie curious on how one goes about finding their audience and how to best place yourself in situations where you can be found by said audience. (For instance) there is some artist that is playing near you and you feel you could be a quality opening act as well as their fans may enjoy you- the best way to market yourself to the promoter to get on a high profile bill? So to speak? Lofty I know, but stranger things have happened?
I will be covering that soon! But I also mention fliering outside of concerts of bigger, better known bands in a previous vlog..
Love the point about poop sniffers. Always gotta wonder about people who keep listening/reading/etc work from people they keep saying they don't like. To give an example, I used to read the Anita Blake books but, like a number of readers, the later books don't appeal to me. So what did i do? Read up to the point where it became something I didn't like and then picked up something I do like. As Voltaire says just because i don't like something doesn't make it bad people confuse their taste with the quality of the work. I like Voltaire, I enjoy most of his work and some of it doesn't fit my personal taste. I don't think the stuff I don't like is bad its just not my thing.
I used to pretend to hate Evanescence because my mom kept saying they were gothic, and like it was a bad thing. So my early teen years were "I just heard this song, that I totally...hate...yeah, I hate it. And screw this Nightwish stuff!"
Paranormal Encyclopedia Well let me take Onision for an example. I dont like him as a person or an entertainer. But he does shit that causes controversy and acts genuine about it. I dont like his work or what he does but it is SO fun analyzing his mindset, seeing the backlash, and watching the chaos unfold around you and he says something else to stir the pot. Some people just like to watch the world burn, I guess? I am one of them. :)
Love this video, I make arts and crafts because I love too. Fuck um if they can't take a joke.
How do you get your creative flow to start again?
Hey Voltaire, can you talk about what to do if your home town doesn't have a scene for what you're trying to do?
I live in a county where hip-hop is a myth; open mics are all about rock and acoustic guitar, and gigs simply don't exist for it. is it really a necessity for me to move if i want to do something with my art? or is there something I can do?
I thought the horn thing in the cabinet change place, then when I playback it really change :D
*drawer
This might be something to talk about, do you think geography plays a part in success as well? I mean sure anyone can post anything on the internet but what if you're trying to reach out locally?
My "kids" are not ugly. They are special! ;)
What are you drinking?
//
"Why do I make art?"
I don't make art, i drawing.
I don't know why. It's the only thing i can do. My brain constantly overflows of my strange shit.
Oh my...! This is terrible!
Just take it with a grain of salt.. Everyone has different opinions and you have to respect that :D
Also I may not want to be a artist but I have learnt a lot of life lessons from these videos that I may have never learned or learned later down the track I have to say I really appreciate that Voltaire has gone out of his way to teach us the fans these values thanks Voltaire love ur work and always will!!!
"Horrible, stinking dog poop! ...and such small portions..."
I'm a wolf!
Voltaire, I have found that there are Psychic Vampires in life,
who go out of their way to suck the happiness out of people.
My advise is to stay away from them.
Well to be honest, when I criticized which everyone does once in awhile. i dont do it to be rude or intending to hurt other's feeling. just though sharing my opinion and thoughts about. that why some people post their work up to get some feedbacks. like you mentioned if people don't like it that alright carry on. dont get me wrong, i know i have posted some negative feedback to some songs. but that doesn't mean i hate it. your rest of your songs is still great and i'm still sticking as voltaire fan. heck i criticized alot of other thing, but doesnt mean i hate it. i might not get into it, but i never hate a creation from people work.
The thing is... criticism, like sex, should only be given when asked for. If I don't ask you what you're feelings are about my music and you decided to tell me you hate it anyway, you are.. in essence RAPING MY EYES!!!! AAAHHH!H!!!! It burns! : p
If I was for everyone I'd be for no one.
This entire series is a lie. He's obtained his following by use of Black Magic, being the Sorcerer Supreme that he is.
Good for him!
Travis? I realise this is a year late, but I would absolutely believe Aurelio made a deal with satan or sold his soul for the lifestyle he lives. And honestly, Im a-ok with that. (:
@@joystickwarrior7769 Satan doesn't work like that.
@@GrimmGio Imposter!
@@joystickwarrior7769 I just realized my RUclips alias my bad. I'm serious I made a deal with Satan he didn't do anything for me besides torturing me with scratches from entity's. It was terrible
Where do you draw the line between valid negative criticism and "shit-sniffers"? Is it just generally how polite, concise and reasonable they come across when they talk to you about your work?
It really depends on the direction of your art. If your goal is to write symphonic movements, people telling you that it needs more drums would not be helpful negative criticism. Alternatively, if you're writing rock music, people telling you you need more drums might be a valid negative criticism, and you should look into it.
On the flip side, if people tell you they don't like your stuff, but don't explain why, then that criticism is useless and you should just not pay any attention to those people.
Yes, delivery is EVERYTHING!!! One can be polite and kind when giving criticism. You still don't need to agree with it, but at least people should be respectful about it. When it's "This sucks!"... that's when they get totally tuned out.
I have another word that you can use for idiot Nikon poop funny I like you then that word and help to sniffing sniffles collection thank you you've made my day
You gotta put that on a shirt. "Ewww dog poo!"
For some reason I'd be super surprised if he isn't in the SCA.
I have a Copralite ring I love to show folks. Then, I regale them with how rockhounds will lick a rock to see hidden details...
It you came across a pile of poo you didn't like could it be considered "re-VOLTing"
