I never really watched movies growing up, so I missed a lot. I only really started during covid, just saw this one this year. I enjoyed it a lot. I also still enjoy the later mission impossibles, but for different, ridiculous reasons.
Richard's mention of the 90's not knowing how to put computers into movies is bang on. Jurassic Park and "It's a UNIX system" with some fucking weird UI that's more like simple 80's block renders will send any IT person insane thinking about it.
I didn't rewatch this one because I just don't like Tom Cruise as an actor or even an action star. His charisma and presence just never comes through for me in the same way it does for seemingly everyone else. Great episode as usual though thanks guys, looking forward tob watching along with the next two.
Re the ending segment, Paul Verhoeven made a satire of fascism without actually understanding what fascism is and what it would entail in a government(Spoiler it wouldn't be a society where you can freely join the military's but drop out at any point during training), but I do agree it is a fun movie. I also watched mission impossible for the first time(It came out in the year I was born) before this episode and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought mission impossible was just a bad action series but this has me thinking about watching the rest at least once.
I felt like the train part of Dead Reckoning was a hint at the first Mission Impossible movie. Between the fight on top of the train, Alanna and Kittridge being in the train. Alanna is said to be Max' granddaugther in the movie. Didn't feel like that was a coincidence.
24:16 Certainly a fun take from Thorin to say he doesn't believe that Tom Cruise does all these stunts himself. Shows he naturally thinks outside the box. But it does come off a bit contrarian. On one hand it seems possible, given how much bullshit is going on in Hollywood and especially Scientology. I could see the cult wanting to craft a certain image for their top contributors. And given how important Tom Cruise is for Scientology it seems counterintuitive that they would let him put his life on the line with these stunts. But then again it would be incredibly hard to keep that narrative alive for so long and so publicly at that. It's not like some abuse scandal being kept under wraps, it'd be just a massive PR lie. Someone would surely say or even hint at something over the course of well over 30 years but it seems impossible to find anyone disputing it. Especially during the periods of Scientology being in the crosshair, where such a revelation would've been massive. Not even detractors and defectors of Scientology draw the stunts into question. If Tom Cruise really didn't do his stunts it'd basically be like a global conspiracy at this point. Insurance might not be an issue at that level of wealth and status. Might even be covered through his cult somehow. It has been stated that the super stars have very much influence and say in the cult. As for Hollywood actors all being too squeamish and unstable ... well, let's just say that Thorin and Richard are both journalists, in the video game space no less, and they aren't exactly the kind of spineless shills you associate with that these days ;) There are always the hardcore people that take their profession to another level even when they don't have to and most others don't. Overall I think it seems more plausible that Cruise does in fact do his stunts (because he is kinda crazy and/or an adrenaline junkie) than that such an active and specific lie (which is different from secrecy, like with how abuse cases only come out years later) was able to remain spotless with all these different people actively nodding along.
If you guys want some laughs. On the subject of Starship Troopers. The XM29 was more or less the US DoD wanting "Starship Troopers rifle" form factor. Also worth noting that while the XM29 was scrapped because it was fucking stupid, its progeny, the X25 did get used a fair amount. Problem is that it was a war crime every time you pull the trigger, but we don't talk about that.
When compared to Mission Impossible 2, this movie is a fkn masterpiece!... Except for the Limp Bizkit version of the original Mission Impossible song which, for some reason, i do think it is still a great version song tbh.
I absolutely adored this movie. It was such a ride, and I watched it right before Dead Reckoning, surprised to see Kittridge and Luther in it. I've went on a binge to watch every M:I movie a few years ago, but by the time of this rewatch forgot most of the plot again. They really do put you in Ethan Hunt's shoes all the way through the movie so you the viewer can fully immerse yourself and try to figure out whats happening and enjoy the ride! Also the Women in this movie are doing a great job, being innocuous, attractive, getting close to the guard to poison his coffee without raising any suspicion. Especially the Broker Lady was fantastic to watch and brought alot of character and personality into every scene she was in! To me i have one minor critique from the early scenes where the group all get murdered, and we see sarah by the fence dying, as Ethan Hunt holds the Knife - Seriously why did she ever get THIS CLOSE TO GET STABBED?? She was literally watching a dude getting pulled away and murdered, yet she runs over, practically PRESSING herself against the fence to give Krieger a chance to stab the fuck outta her?? IDK in my mind I imagines she could do the same thing, but just keeping a bit of distance. It really puzzled me after we get the reveal-shot towards the end of the movie that it was indeed Krieger. Maybe a more observant watcher can solve this for me in the comments, i feel like i just missed something obvious, or maybe it literally is just abit of movie magic and hoping viewers dont think too hard about it. But in any case this is a movie i can easily rewatch and enjoy again and share with my friends. Thank you gentlemen for the show.
I'm with Richard thus far through 90s action. Face/Off went too far. Mission Impossible is solid but is ultimately missing something that would elevate it beyond mildly smart action/spy thriller. Certainly better than MI:2 which I ended up rewatching to see if it was as ridiculous as I remembered. Mainly leaving a comment on this one because of the return of old men seethe at Casino Royale bit.
The epic finale when the chopper goes into the tunnel and the main theme starts. You have to be tone deaf not to get insanely hyped about that when it kicks in, and I’m not even interested about the franchise and genre.
Loving the content as always, though I must listen to Thorin for at least 10 hour a week 😅
Why not 20 hours? We should really make more content.
I fear I might start trying to talk with an accent. Keen to see which genres you go to next.
This is one of my favorite RUclips series, please know you guys are appreciated
Probably my favourite movie of the four, looking forward to the discussion

Feels like a good time to come back to this comment
Great content! Keep it rolling

I love this show so much!

Will there be a history epics video series that includes The Last Samurai, Master & Commander, Gladiator, and Last of the Mohicans I wonder
Monte have you seen the Tinker Tailor miniseries with Alec Guinness?
Nah not having it - Casino Royale was great!

ay
I never understood the love for the pierce brosnan movies. They are beyond trash to me idk maybe its the age in me talking.

I hope we eventually have “a scanner darkly” on this series… would love to hear your guys’ opinions
First time watching MI1 and I really enjoyed the spy thriller aspects. Of course the ending took me out of it unfortunately.
I can finally watch this show! I've been waiting for an episode of a film I've actually seen! 😆

Sleeping on the Jackie Chan train fight at the end of supercop
Thorin put Monte on a heater with this one. 😅

Good show! Why don't you do a series with directors too? Not just movie genres?
My first time watching it and I had the same reaction as Monte for that final train sequence. It felt so out of place
Talking about the bond traitor idea, isn't that basically the start of Goldeneye with Sean Beans character
For the algorithm
Back again with a banger
The perfect opening clip
First Summoning Insight and now this ?
LFN Fans eating good right now 👍🏿
