John Carter was outstanding, it was the OG Science/Fantasy franchise, and its an amazing character story. Its a shame the marketing made the film look so dumb, which it did.
It is a good movie. But a good to great movie is not always a hit with audiences. Look at The Shawshank Redemption. It flopped on release but is now considered a masterpiece.

I've been reading ERB novels for way too many years and looked forward to this one. It's a pity they chopped it up so much but still, an enjoyable movie. The trouble with being a pioneer in genres is that you become a cliche of yourself. By the time this movie was released there were many other movies that had already referenced the style and as a result this one appeared to be a poor copy of it's own copiers. No matter, I still watch and enjoy it. If you get a chance, read the original series, along with the Lost World, the Pelucidar series, and the Tarzan series. You'll see where a lot of modern movies come from.

Dread flopped at the box office, but the blu ray entered to history because it sold a lot, more than 20 million copies just in a few months after the home release
Because while it cost a fortune, it didnt flop too hard. Its gross recouped its budget/marketing, but it lost around $40m due to theatre cuts. So it was a flop but not a total bomb. For Costner his huge bomb was The Postman.
Ripd was great, and john carter was fantastic. As wm said, many things like star wars were based off that book, so of course it would feel derivitive. Its the foundation of todays sci fi. You have to view it as such.

Why are black versions of white characters not criticised as well? Sounds like reverse racism to me.
Agree. John Carter was very much in the "HG Wells" genre category so probably didn't work for younger people. Stealth was just a fun movie and quite possibly a glimpse of the future as drones and AI seem destined to be the next big thing in military aviation. Neither deserved to be a flop.

The 13th warrior failed because they changed the title from the book - the book was called “eaters of the dead”, had they named it that it would have done much better.
John Carter and The Lone Ranger Are actually Good!. Those are trilogies should bees. That I wish more people would look forward to instead of reboots and superhero movies every year.
I bought the Bluray, and have watched it at regular intervals. I loved it in the theater, and still love it at home on my big screen. There's always something beautiful about the film to appreciate, something new you notice, some allusion, and then references where you see where more recent films (*cough*starwars*cough*) got their influence.
I do remember my one complaint being that the whole moon jumping thing didn't make sense. Did they explain why john can jump so high when the martians can't?
its not explained as such (nor is it really in the books). It's attributed to "something to do with the density of his bones". basically, it's based off Edgar Rice Burrough's lack of real scientific understanding of the topic. So we accept it as part of the world that he created. Martians can't jump, John Carter can. *shrug*
Ostensor Mortem21 In this sense, John Carter shares yet another thing with Star Wars, in that they are both somewhere between fantasy and science fiction. That's probably why I was unable to enjoy The Expanse; I was feeling down in the dumps, and a grim, gritty drama full of cynical characters wasn't doing me any favors. If hard science means I get more depressed, I'll take inaccurate, lighthearted fantasy. The Expanse will be available somewhere when I'm ready to watch it.
John Carter was actually a very good movie. The problem was the trailer. The trailer for the movie wasn’t clear. It left people wondering what the movie was about. I was one of those people. Who going to pay $15 on guessing what a movie’s about? I waited until it came out on DVD to see it and was pleased. I read that it made up on it’s theater losses with its returns on streaming & DVD. The ending was a really good surprise and I would like to see a part 2.
The marketing and the name of the movie itself helped it fail. I could see it being a hit by calling it what it was "A Princess from Mars" As a movie though...I loved it.
I absolutely loved the 13th Warrior. I saw it 6 times in the theaters and I own it on DVD. I even got my nephew to love it too. Even if no one else likes that movie, I still watch it all the time. That just means more Antonio Banderis and Vikings for me. ^_^
Agreed, I kind of like RIPD. It was basically the Men in Black but in the afterlight. I was hoping it would have gotten a sequel, but it doesn't look like that to be the case Anymore.
I thought John Carter was an unfortunate flop, because it was really good. Same with the similar Disney film "Prince of Persia". I like Disney's live-action adventure movies like "Swiss Family Robinson" and "20,000 Leagues". At least the Pirates movies took off, but I only really like the first of the series, and even that one had a ridiculous battle-opera at the end that nearly ruins the movie. ...okay, "Lone Ranger"... I stand corrected. That movie was miserable.
2:03, Correction, the pilots in Stealth were Navy pilots. To quote their Commanding Officer, “You are pilots of the U.S. Navy, I expect nothing less than perfection!”
I wouldn't call it really good. I saw it while I was in the hospital. It was entertaining, and yes, worth a watch, but I probably woulodn't by it unless I was really board. Just my opinion.
listening to jeff bridges talking like a stroke victim was annoying af. I liked the movie. Don't go into it thinking it will give you the meaning of life. I sat and watched it with a big tub of popcorn and a Cpl of beers.... enjoyed it!
'Heaven's Gate' was the most costly flop in that it brought an end to directors having control over movies. The fact that it brought down an entire studio scared other studios and now directors have no control over casting, editing, trailers, etc. Scripts are basically written by producers.
I thoroughly enjoyed Sahara and have watched it many times. I've read maybe 30 Clive Cussler books and it's a shame only this and Raise the Titanic have been made into movies. 13th Warrior is good too, but I had no idea it cost sooo much. Are the quoted costs adjusted for inflation cos that was like 20 years ago too.
What other movie flops should we have mentioned?
Looper Heavens gate.
Including the number of horses, that died for it.
47 Ronin and Green Lantern.
Treasure island. The film that flopped so hard it brought down a film company.
Looper Power Rangers
I rather liked John Carter - but clearly not enough people agreed with me to make it pay for itself.

The 13th warrior failed because they changed the title from the book - the book was called “eaters of the dead”, had they named it that it would have done much better.
I liked the 13th warrior
Added to my watch list👍🏾
13th Warrior's a great movie. Oh well.
I still totally LOVE The 13th Warrior though I didn't know it was in theatres and found it on DVD rental as a teenager.
I thought John Carter was a good movie
Hey Looper guys i love your background soundtrack!
John Carter and The Lone Ranger Are actually Good!. Those are trilogies should bees. That I wish more people would look forward to instead of reboots and superhero movies every year.
The 13th Warrior is terrific; one of my favorite movies. People don't know good when they see it.
I still think John carter was underrated. I mean it has been a while since I've seen it, but I don't remember it being bad by any means.
*shrug*
Ehh, not movie ruining, just curious.

In this sense, John Carter shares yet another thing with Star Wars, in that they are both somewhere between fantasy and science fiction.
"The Lone Ranger" was an incoherent mess. It had no consistant tone and was really more about Depps Tonto than the Ranger himself.
I liked when he rode Silver on the rooftops and the theme was playing.
Movie flops don't mean bad movies. Sometimes movie hits are so shitty that you wonder how the public can love such turds
Stealth was about Navy pilots. Not Air Force pilots.
No one cares
@@matht-m9e The Air Force cares.
The 13th Worrier was great, John Carter wasn't bad either. These movies were a hell of a lot better than the shit they make now.
Sahara was amazing.
Sorry I don't speak English.
But you are speaking English now.
RIPD was hilarious. Loved it. Jeff Bridges was amazing.
13th warrior was an AWESOME movie......still remember when the first wave of enemy soldiers showed up.
I absolutely loved the 13th Warrior. I saw it 6 times in the theaters and I own it on DVD. I even got my nephew to love it too.
Even if no one else likes that movie, I still watch it all the time. That just means more Antonio Banderis and Vikings for me. ^_^
The 13th Warrior was epic
I really love John Carter as a teenager and I still love it❤
I really enjoyed RIPD, I didn’t think it was that bad. X
Agreed, I kind of like RIPD. It was basically the Men in Black but in the afterlight. I was hoping it would have gotten a sequel, but it doesn't look like that to be the case Anymore.
Lone Ranger? I love that movie !! Especially the final train scene, it was epic !!
Looper always picking on John Carter.
John Carter, R.I.P., and The Lone Ranger were great movies.
Need to add Solo to this list now
I thought John Carter was an unfortunate flop, because it was really good.
I don’t care but I Love John Carter
John Carter very underrated. Good flick.
WHAT? I really like RIPD, what is wrong with the movie? Even my father likes it.
Let's be honest, it should have been a blockbuster with a sequel but something is off with the delivered products.
2:03, Correction, the pilots in Stealth were Navy pilots. To quote their Commanding Officer, “You are pilots of the U.S. Navy, I expect nothing less than perfection!”
I have R.I.P.D. but haven't watched is it any good?
I really enjoyed it, unless your'e a hardcore movie critic, you'll probably like it
it's pretty good
I wouldn't call it really good. I saw it while I was in the hospital. It was entertaining, and yes, worth a watch, but I probably woulodn't by it unless I was really board. Just my opinion.
so many grammar mistakes....and no one called it really good
listening to jeff bridges talking like a stroke victim was annoying af.
Love " 13 warriors " , love " John Carter " and the rest is 😨 not cool.
