  • We review the LG B8, an entry-level 2018 OLED TV from the South Korean brand. Topics covered include 3D LUT Autocal, black frame insertion, difference from step-up C8, HDR Game Mode vs 2017's B7 OLED, risk of burn-in, and more.
Our review sample is 65 inches in screen size, model number OLED65B8PLA which is the UK 3-pin-plug version. It may also be sold as the LG OLED65B8 or LG OLED65B8P.

Bud The Cyborg Well Vince puts a lot of work in, really deserves more, but I think he does get loads of subs then loses some of them as folk aren't still looking for a TV after they buy one, and because it is monotonal dialogue with long "adverts" for Crampton and Moore etc.

As a 65" LG E7 owner, the vertical banding is a noticeable but minor issue.

My friend recently bought a 65" B8 and after about 150 hours of viewing I offered to calibrate it. I was absolutely stunned at how accurate it was out of the box. For SDR, all I had to do was enable ISF Expert and disable "wide" colour gamut by setting it to "auto" and it passed the color checker test patterns with DeltaE of around 1.0 or below! From there, I just adjusted "OLED Light" to a sensible level. Grayscale and gamma charts were basically dead flat and any adjustments would have been completely invisible to the human eye.

Vincent, again another fantastic review! I'm learning more every other day thanks to you! Thank-you for also confirming about burn in after so many people complain about it in a hypothetical sense stating that "there's no way they will spend £3k on a tv only for it to be burnt in after 1.5 years..."
For the testing, how about a Raspberry Pi or an Arduino board that can be hooked up with an IR blaster soldered to it? Then simply code it to turn on based on the system clock?

Bought a B8 55” from Richer Sounds today for £970, seems a bargain given what I’ve seen and read, swapped it for a slightly cheaper Sony XF90 which was delivered with a damaged screen, great service from Richer and six year warranty. Perfect for watching Netflix and gaming on my PS4 PRO😆.

You can programme the Sky box to record manually, any time on/off, any duration, any channels. If its possible to leave the screen on you can create irregular activity. The recordings show in the Planner only as date, time and duration. Don't know if this of any help for what you need but it's free. There is no charge. @Olympic Bear do they in the 8th gen? In the 7th gen I think they used the same processor in b and c models so I assumed that was the case in the 8th gen as well.

      @levybarella4770 5 лет назад +5

@Olympic Bear get on rtings.com website. They say that c8, e8, g8 and W8 are exactly the same, only the design is different. B8 uses a7 processor instead a9, but it's only a slight, unnoticeable difference. So go for b8 because it is the Cheapest.

My main worry about these TV's is the amount of stuttering or what looks like skipping in long panning shots, also upscaling older content like sdr Netflix. I mainly use my PS4 Pro for gaming and my Xbox one S for 4k media content. Also if anyone has any tips on how to reduce stuttering across any media format in the settings it would be greatly appreciated.
    Choices are...
    - Sony A8 (I hear its the best)
    - Sony 95F (about 1000 NZD cheaper than the rest of these, and i'm not sure if they others are worth the cost accept for OLED)
    - Panasonic FZ950 (Was my first choice as the screen looked amazing although upon further review, some videos said it had noticable stutter so i'm aprehensive unless theirs a way to lessen this effect)
    - LG C8 (Don't know anything about stuttering)
I live in New Zealand so their aren't as many options i'm afraid.

Sadly he only looked at lighting mode. That is super fast (a few min.) The better mode takes hours and hours. Yes, not useful to someone visiting, but for people that own their own equipment, the slow mode is what would be used.
I would have liked to hear, even if not practical for him/his client, his thoughts on auto-cal 3dlut using 5000+ points.

I’m rolling a 65X850B bravia and the picture still blows my mind. I normally upgrade TVs every 4 years but I am scared that early tech of oleds will disappoint me with issues such as poor motion flow and image burn. It’s a big decision. I watch movies and game in 4K and my current bravia is flawless...

    • @knineknights
      @knineknights 6 лет назад

Sam Jones Sony are only on their second model now. Image burn is such an issue that if a section of the screen has had the same still image for too long, the Bravia will refresh the screen with scrolling white and grey lines. Not ideal for online gaming.

All you need to do Vincent is to pick your power saving settings on all of your inputs and the tv. On a Panasonic, switch on viera link and power off link, then turn on no signal power off. Set your tv's power save setting for a period longer than any of your connected devices, this means that no matter what power saving settings you have on your freeview box and console, if anythjng happens they will all turn off with the tv. This will give you some leeway as well, you can set your console power save settings to slightly more time than you play, and as a test just go on to RUclips or mixer and just let random videos play, the console will shut off if you're not there, and because you have set no signal power off, on, if you are not there the tv will turn off after 10 mins regardless of power save settings if no signal is detected. When you're ready to watch tv on your freeview box, you don't even need to set the power save settings on it if it's the last thing you do, the tv will shut it off when it goes, even if you fall asleep, like in real world viewing. Good video, and the right way to do an oled burn in test, comparative to real world usage.

The video processor should have a user control for "duty cycle" for the BFI setting, eg. a slider which lets the user dial in how many milliseconds of black frame they want per frame duration.

Did you ever fix your burn-in test issues? If not grab an arduino and some IR LED's (both wide and narrow), and an infrared receiver (e.g. TSOP38238). Even if you can't program it shouldn't be hard for you to write a program to turn the devices on and off. You can use the receiver to get the correct infrared codes for any remote function you like, build up a database of them, then just write a simple program that waits X seconds, then sends the code, in a loop.
It may sound daunting, but it's *much* easier than it sounds.

Correct me if I am wrong but this is an improved c7 and should be priced accordingly. For output just use any SBC as the source device which can be programmed to turn itself on or off, most HDMI spliters can also be controlled with a small hack with a raspberry pi or an arduino, same goes for any TV with a rs232 connection those who do not have it can be controlled by emulating the IR remove via a Rasberry PI/arduino IR module, BT/Wifi remotes are even more easily emulated.

For burn-in testing: raspberry PI + their raspian OS + full-screen chrome browser + cronjob cec-client command to power on/off over HDMI = ~$USD 60 I use this setup for a family information display. Powers off during the night.

For an automatic source you could use an outlet timer (i.e. the same kind used to turn on lamps when you're on vacation) and a Raspberry Pi. The static desktop of the Pi alone would be a test, but you could also write a simple bash script to run on startup and play some downloaded video file (like a BBC or NatGeo recording)

    • @nihilityjoey
      @nihilityjoey 6 лет назад

Scott Wright Doing a video on cables is a time consuming thing. Yes better quality cables make a difference (not in the way zealots think, or those that debate them). A great cable will clean your image, the same as a power conditioner (The latter being more effective). As with anything to do with sight and sound, difference of that type will only be noticeable if you've spent enough time and become visually and audibly accustomed to the set up you have, and then change it. He'd have to spend a good bit of time with each cable, and maybe different tv's and equipment. It would be interesting, and a video I'd watch, but it would be time consuming.

In past I had plasma TV, where burns were visible too. Then I had LED TV - no burn... but it was the only advantage... while the picture (naturalness) was realy poor with respect to old plasma. Now I am going back... to Oled. For "my eye taste" the best I can do.
Let Samsung makes big promo "no burn"... the only thing they can argue with... and it is tooooo little to me with respect to my experience.

I'm not sure this would work for your use case completely, but there are these sort of options for the wifi controlled power plugs that companies like amazon offer. You can schedule on and off times which would at least power and unpower the device, but for something like a console you would still be stuck turning it on... I Dont think there's a way you can do that without MANUALLY remotely launching it through something like the phone or pc apps for the respective devices.

What's your verdict on B8 vs C8 Bro?
Is the extra £200 worth it? RTings says it's not.
Is the extra 200 nits really a worthy uptick?

    • @iv3010

Lookin for an answer to this as well. The B8's currently £1299 and the C8's £1699. I prefer the B8 stand so i'm hoping the difference between the 2 isn't too large so I can go for the B8, i'll be using it for gaming only

There obviously is a difference due to a better processor, but consider that the B8 is still an OLED TV that came out this year, so it is amazing by itself and I'd go for that one, considering the stand and the price. Who cares about that difference.

so the big elephant in the room is ....why won't LG change the tone mapping on the b7/c7? we see that not only LG fixed it for the 2018 sets AND that the 2018 sets track the EOTA curve more accurately. There are petitions and many angry customers and LG keeps ignoring us.

From a business perspective it makes sense. I have no idea on this, though it could also be due to when they acquired this technology, which even sony is now using...

You could try a cheap android media box that supports remote switching when you're not at home and play back videos on loop simulating real world usage (a movie, couple hours of news and sports, a few hours of gaming recorded footage).
The more expensive and flexible way is to just use a HTPC, so I'm not sure if you want to go down that route.

It sounds like Black Frame Insertion is just being used way too aggressively.
If you keep the flicker down to 4 milliseconds it should be fine, regardless of framerate.
Yes, I know that means you're not reducing motion blur "as much" but it's also still an improvement (separated frames instead of a continuous stream of colour).

Thank you for such a great technical review. One question that I have is the picture slideshow that you were showing on the TV. What are you using to generate that? Is it a TV channel or something from a computer? It really makes the TV look like a piece of art!

Vincent, why isn't LG changing the way they approach to tone mapping on the 2017 models? Makes no sense seeing as they're doing it on their 2018 sets. I'm not talking about dyn tone mapping (which is incumbent on the a9 processor). Are they just trying to get 2017 owners to buy 2018 tvs? It makes no sense.

    • @CC42_

unless there is something unique with game mode (possibly because of games dynamism) then there's no excuse seeing as the 2017 oleds already have dyn. tone mapping in their other picture modes.

Great review as always. I am buying another OLED this year. I have the original LGEA9800 (still running strong btw other than a couple of unresponsive sub pixels) I want to get into HDR and 4k. Is the panel and chip set of all 2018 OLED models the same for this year? I want the best picture I don't care about speakers etc...

I play red dead redemption 2 in game mode because it gives the lowest input lag. But, while playing, I switched to the 'vivid' hdr picture mode, and it looks 100 times better and so real. clearer image and and really crisp. Is there a way to play with this level of detail while maintaining a low input lag? because game mode picture quality just doesn't come close to how good the vivid setting looks

I respect you views highly. Live in the US so, I need information on models which can be purchased here. I am a fan of Panasonic products but alas, they pulled out their sales in the US. Because, using the LG OLED displays (same as Sony and Vizio I think) I feel they excell in their digital electronics circuitry design. What do you feel would be your model choice for a 70 - 77 inch size?

You could use Kodi scripts to automate playback of footage at various times, use game footage, TV footage etc to simulate general usage. Any chance Vincent LG will change their tone mapping on the 2017 models to match this B8 minus the dynamic tone mapping of course, if you've got the ear at anyone at LG please ask them.

Im surprised no one is talking about the screen coating. I just saw the 55" Panasonic 2018 model and it was extremely much better looking than any last year OLED tv. Reason? Because of non-agressive anti-reflective filter that dont ruin picture quality. It has been long known that matte coating ruin PQ, making the picture dirty and colors less vibrant. I have used only glossy monitors for years now and it has always been a pain since there is almost no market for glossy PC monitors. I just cant handle the dirty picture quality of a matte coating, even semi-gloss looks dirty to me.

Was looking forward to displaying wide-color-gamut photos on my new LG B8 55", but when viewed on the TV they look much duller than on my calibrated WCG PC monitor.
    Basic workflow:
    1) convert photos from RAW using Lightroom
    2) export the photos from Lightroom as JPEGs, using the DCI-P3 color space that the B8 should be able to cover
    3) transfer the photos to the TV via a thumb drive
    4) use the built-in photos app to display them
I guess that the built-in photos app just ignores the DCI-P3 profile and assumes sRGB, resulting in the muted colors.
Question: Do you see a way of showing the images in a wide-color-gamut on the B8 without hooking up a computer?
    Thanks!
