San Lorenzo Canyon should be avoided if there is any chance of rain for the area. The main canyon is the collector for runoff from the west and tributary canyons along its length. The canyon floor an flood wall-to-wall in minutes.
It really is! Who knows with the weather we’ve been getting lately, but it shouldn’t be rainy. It’s generally sunny and dry around there. The days will probably be in the 50s-60s, but the nights will be cool, lower 30s even in the 20s, so that’s something to think about. I’ve camped there in Dec & January in a tent and it wasn’t bad at all (I sleep in layers and have a -20 sleeping bag). ⛺️
Thank you so much for the videos... loving your channel,as I love NM and dream of camping all over the SW one day... Greetings from Miami, and excellent work. Beautiful.
the trail guide for the GET (Grand Enchantment Trail) says there is a San Lorenzo spring in San Lorenzo canyon. What I would like to do is go through san lorenzo canyon heading north on my first day, staying on the south side of the salado and camping, next day moving camp up by cerro colorado (one of the thousands, the cerro colorado in the sierra ladrones) and then the next day do a 30 mi loop to and from Ladron peak, then hike out the next day through the visitor area. Of course. Concern is water, rio salado will likely be wet to the west, but I am curious if you have heard of this San Lorenzo Spring? I guess the Rio Grande is pretty close, if not.
That should be amazing! Looking on Google maps, it shows the spring at: (34.2392326, -107.0197560) but I have no idea if that’s a reliable source of water. You may want to call the BLM office in Socorro 575-835-0412. Sorry I couldn’t help more, enjoy your hike!
@@highdesertcampertours No problem. Thanks for what info you could give. Will be soon so chances are pretty good for it being wet I think. Not too many other water sources on the east side. I am well able to carry 5 liters anyway so I will likely be okay. The trail guide for the GET rated as a 3/4 on its reliability scale -- must be serviceable ! I will report back after the backpacking trip if I find out more. Also super cool that there are fire pits there !
Nice man you and the old RUclips are doing me right! I made it down through Silver city area Ben Lily etc. did my business down at the playas and now heading back up outside of truth and consequence at Monticello Road. But I think I might have to pull into that canyon tomorrow for a day or two! Thanks again for all the good info!
Thanks so much for the maps with your videos. It took me three trips before I figured out how to reach this BLM site. I wish this video was published before I made my journeys.
👎🏼 That’s unfortunate. I figured as much, having camped there twice with a couple weeks between. Some of the sites were trashed with living branches, glass, and garbage the 2nd time. If you keep following the main dirt road out there, I guess it leads to another, smaller canyon. I wonder if there’s less activity there?
That’s part of what happens when you advertise these lesser known camping spots with a RUclips - you can accidentally encourage huge groups of people with no respect of the land to show up and trash it. Imo these spots are best advertised by word of mouth.
i trapped myself on a towering pillar in san lorenzo canyon new mexico while jumping from spire to spire, realizing i had jumped from a taller one to a shorter one when my friend bill yelled "how you gonna get back?" I began to explore my prison, and there in the rock i found stairs carved into the rock. Someone, sometime, had done the same thing and had to carve these steps to escape. This was 40 odd years ago. Did i dream it, or was it real? anyone else ever seen them?
I think you could get to the end of the canyon, but it might be difficult to turn around there depending on your length. The deeper sand is mostly in the wash before the canyon, but if you stay on the main path, you should be fine. I hope that helps!

Wow, this place is amazing! I was wondering about rain - does it get a lot of rain in December? Thanks! 💙Terry and Terri

Stay away on the weekend, this is a local party hangout and they will run you off with loud music, drinking and utvs.

@@highdesertcampertours we left after 2 hrs and never have been back. Exposed my hand gun while hooking my rv up. That's how worried I was.
Oh wow! That’s horrible!
And thanks for sharing

Now I want to go check that out!! Thanks for sharing!
site 2 almost ripped my front bumper off when i was leaving lol, didnt expect the drop to be so significant
Oh no! Cool site to stay though, huh?
@@highdesertcampertours for sure was, that entire canyon side has trails so we went exploring for most of the day
Pls don't camp at site 1. I've had to climb around rvs literally blocking the exit from the trail.
I agree ☝️
How far can I camp in with an rv trailer without getting stuck?
