Is a 40 HP VW Mk1 Golf Diesel Even Fun to Drive?!

  • Hey guys! So this is one of the lowest horsepower vehicles we've ever driven here on Roads Untraveled and also one of the slowest. Does that mean it's not fun to drive?! Absolutely not. With the original 1.5L diesel engine under the hood, this gorgeous little VW Mk1 Golf (Rabbit as it was named here in Canada) is fully capable of providing endless laughs and a surprisingly engaging driving experience. Enjoy!

Definitely, brings to mind my old Polo 1043cc. That was 47bhp in a car probably the same size as the mk1 golf before it & it was a blast to be able to thrash it everywhere with no fear of a ticket except for maybe excess noise!

It makes you a driver ....
      Mk1s are a blast.
concentrating to keep all the speed you can while blasting backroads.
Brakes aren’t needed as much, you have to stay focused to not lose momentum.
Get a good driver in one of these, and a lousy driver in something with more power, and the good driver won’t be all that far behind.
I was giving some kid in a civic a fit on the backroads in the 4wd Mitsubishi fuso work truck a while back.

    • @frisco-2.0
      @frisco-2.0 5 лет назад +2

That is not correct! The beetle ist still the MOST build vehicle in the world.
Because it is only one major design that was used from 1938 up to 2003.
The beetle had only minor changes, but the car was the same from the beginning. Over 21 million beetles were build.

"It's a momentum car," yup. You learn to drive real fast.
Super easy to work on and very reliable and inexpensive to operate, especially with antique plates.
When I was little we had 2 of these baby blue Mk I beauties. Got 55 MPH on a trip from Boise to PA (with the prevailing winds pushing us, but to its credit it did the Rockies). I have a minty '85 Mark II Golf diesel 1.6 and it is so stinking fun to rail that thing, it's a little wider and heavier than the rarebit. It is a turd, 0-60 in 21.6 seconds from the factory, but it does fine considering there's always a car in front of me slowing me down.... 40mpg if driving it hard, 55 if nursing it on longer trips. Top speed is 89, but it will do 100 on a mile long downhill in West Virginia's mountains, you just gotta believe for a while.

  • @Pobrais

I use my Mk1 '82 diesel as a daily driver.
My dad bought it new. It's been painted once and it's taken me and the wife around Europe. Ok, it's a bit slow but it takes my kids to school every day and takes me to work. You can see me driving in central Lisbon practically every day in it.

For me I was thinking more in with the mk2 mk3 swaps 2.8vr6 / 3.2 vr6 .. Since it's already a diesel I believe he would want to keep it in a diesel configuration.. He's more into diesel engines and I'm more into gas engines. And I like the revvy-ness of the vr6 type engines, and I need more then 40 -100 bhp . I would keep the 1.6 diesel kind of curious of using it as a marine application.

That's a whopping 68bhp 1.9D admittedly but through a ZF auto box and heavier car I think power to weight would be fair. Also I challenge the statement that every diesel after this was turbo, because Citroen/PSA Group were still selling a detuned variant of the old n/a XUD as late as 2001 . Sweet sounding little motor that Golf though, on a straight pipe naturally :)

These cars were fast for their engine size. As Matt says: its a momentum car........

These should be a great drivers car , the problem is everyone thinks they can " improve " them. By altering the suspension set up you have made a smooth , comfortable and responsive car a pain to drive. Put it back stock with good brand of the correct tyres and you will be amazed.

"go full tilt and mash the breaks"
Till you drive a 1974 citroen gs.
Then you give it a little bit of a press with your toe.
Otherwise you bounce off the windshield.

I regret that I've never driven a Mk1 VW Golf (Rabbit in the USA). However I hav ridden in some over the years. I'd buy a Mk1 Rabbit Diesel if I could find one in decent condition.

Roads You gotta drive a peugeot 206 1.9 dw8 diesel... had it for two months as a city car.. 71hp but fuck me did that thing go... it was so damn agile through city when driving it hard. Loved it!

Gotta love a torquey diesel, they often feel much faster than they are because of their ability to pull in any gear.

Tay lor the one that i had was an N/A but when you stayed at the right rpm and did heal and toe before corners... dam... I remember driving it like a crazy fuck up... and trust me I have owned really expensive fast cars, but the thrills this diesel gave me are till this day unforgetable. I even might get a 206 rc just for shits and giggles.

Chris S sounds about right, my 95 750 makes 100~ at the crank. And 40-50mpg. Sad to say 40hp diesel isn't the way to have fun and save money, it's the bike lol.

Dangerous in the wet without abs and skinny super inflated tires. I noticed this in my mk2 in a roundabout, I gave it the beans and it spun the tires and I exited the roundabout one exit earlier 😂😂

My brother had one back in the 87. It was a 4 speed manual, and 4th gear in his car was mostly un-usable. His car had to be driven at the imaginary redline all the time, 4th gear could only be used where the pavement was level or downhill, any slight incline and one would be forced to downshift to 3rd. His diesel engine must have had a flaw, acceleration was nothing like the above video, or Matts engine is not stock.
