- I can't remove the transmission pan while doing a tranny service on my Denali pickup. Should be the same on 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2x4 and 4x4 as well.
Gotta be careful with this on the rust belt vehicles or high mileage vehicles. Could crack the exhaust flange right at the manifold
If you live in the rust belt don’t touch any exhaust bolts. A pry bar and minimal pressure gives enough room to slide the pan out
I discovered a much simpler hack and all you have to do is to use about 3ft of your 2 X 4 for leverage! I removed my pan in minutes by using a 2 x 4and placed it over the exhaust pipe ahead of the flexible part of the back converter. It is just that….. flexible, and will allow the pipe to give. Once you push down on the 2 x 4, the pipe will move just enough to get the pan out. Repeat to go back. Anyone can do this hack and no tools necessary unless you have to saw a board.
Or, do it the right way. Use a swivel and extension to remove the 3 nuts that hold the right down pipe to the manifold, pry gently down to lower the pipe down 3/4". Takes 2 minutes, the tranny pan comes right out, and you don't stress any components.
Sure, and in the Northeast, if you try that on a vehicle more than two or three years old you break the bolts off. THEN you got problems.
@@shelleyking8450you can tell these comments arent from up here doesnt matter how much you wash it in the winter shits gonna get bad lmao
@@stunningandbrave3527😂😂 Lmao
I am in Texas and we don't have a rust problem down here. So removing the blots and dropping the exhaust is easy for us. However, I have worked on vehicles from up north and I hate dealing with broken exhaust bolts. So I can see where this would be useful for those guys.
100% concur, do it right without stressing any other parts, leave the shortcuts for the lazy non caring ones. 👍, better yet …take this video out 🙄
I smashed my pan a little bit with a hammer where it was bulging out, worked good.
Excellent tip, worked great, saved many hours as the O2 sensor blocked the bolts to the exhaust manifold!! Thanks for the excellent work!!!
I just changed my 2016 Silvarado took the pan off with no problem. If you lower the pan and remove filter and gasket first, you can twist the pan a little towards the driver's it will come out without messing with the exhaust. There is a video out on how to remove the pan on GM trucks. Good luck.
J Garcia do you remember name of video or link to it. My truck is coming up on 50k miles and I been watching vids on putting in a plug but not found any on taking out pan
@@jerryf6983 I didn't try this yet, but found this online... Doesn't hurt to try, right? My 2018 Silverado is hitting 50K soon also. If it doesn't work, I will just clean the pan and magnets, replace the filter while it is still hanging.
@@michaelshin4111 I just changed fluid and filter last week(fluids from front to back). Dropped filter down while pan still in place and tried taking out. DID NOT work. Strap to bring down exhaust and took 2 nuts off & jacked up transfer case(little at a time) until pan slid out. Added drain plug and put everything back in.
I loosen the transmission mount and jack the back of transmission up slightly. comes out easy. much less work!
Worked perfectly on my 2012 Yukon xl. On some models there is a flex coupler right behind the cat. Did not need to remove the hanger brackets because of this coupler.
I just did this. The hardest was getting the filter seal out. You have no idea how this is appreciated. The suburban no problem. Tahoe was a pain. So didn't want to mess with the headers. Love your channel even more.
Good thing the muffler is rotted out so the owner can't hear the leak you created with this hack. Charge accordingly and own it if you break it.
Thanks. I have a two part question, how often you have to change transmission fluid in terms of milage and time, whichever comes first?
Hey whatever works, my only question is, doesn't that put strain on the exhaust manifolds?
Lol, just remove the 4 bolts on the crossmember and jack up the transfer case. Those rubber hangers can be a pain sometimes and flexing the pipe that much can cause a leak or break if it's rusty.
We jacked up the transfer case there still wasn't enough room
The engine, trans, t-case and exhaust are all rigidly mounted together. If you jack them up, they all go up together. Just remove the 3 nuts that hold the right downpipe to the manifold and it will drop 3/4"-all you need to get the pan out.
Always a smartass
Unbolt the mount, lift drivetrain about an inch by jacking up on the tcase.
How much room do you need? Have you tried putting a jack under the transfer case, undoing the mount at trans then jacking it up? Look like you only have about an inch at the sensor but is that enough??
Great idea! Shows that there can most times be a better way.
I'm posting this to hopefully help others, not for arguments sake.
Pan Removal Trick: I have the 2018 Tahoe 6L80 trans. and the pan will come right out! Not sure if your ride will have it (i know most do), but I removed the heat shield on passenger side of pan (2 bolts). Then I was able to slide the pan over to passenger side about 3 inches, then twisted the front of the pan towards the driver side and it came right out! Removing the little heat shield gives you lots more room. If you look at the back of the pan (shallow end), there is a little raised area on the bottom about 3 inches from the passenger side, that spot is the point that will allow you to move passed the exhaust y pipe (cross over pipe). Hope this helps!! 👍
That's too much work! All you gotta do is unbolt rear trans mount and jack it up 1" (inch)!!! Waaayyyyy better hack!!!!
not only is the exhaust pipe in the way, it puts off a LOT of heat that radiates up to the pan to heat the fluid even more. I want to put a fiberglass wrap around that section of pipe to see if it reduces this problem. Has anyone tried this? Do you think it will help?
I was actually contemplating running a true dual exhaust and eliminating that y pipe all together but I haven't, seen many videos on it. Very bad design, the torque converter in these are no hell either.
Will there be a video for the 10 speed automatic in future, how to change the transmission fluid? Thank you!
Somehow it makes no sense to force a pipe to remove the pan. I think it ends up damaging the exhaust pipe. Of course it makes even less sense that it was designed like that by GM engineers, but of course they never get dirty working from a computer on a desk, so what do they care.
Your comment is on point. They just care bout making money .
@@reyesroq totally!
Not even going to waste my time with all that BS. Listen; cut the exhaust pipe and drop it 3” and weld it back up. Then next time you change the oil its going to take 1/4 of the time then getting lumber and straps out , smh
If your rearmost manifold bolt heads werent already missing, they will be soon
Great tip! I just used a ratchet strap to hold a head pipe out of the way while fitting a new exhaust manifold on a class A motor home. When I finished, the pipe bounced right back.
Just unbolt the Transmission from it's mount and jack it up a bit at the rear end. That'll give you all the room you need. Fyi both your Trans pan gasket and diff gaskets are reusable (dealership says so).
A cutting torch would have that exhaust out of the way in 10 seconds.
Would you say its do able without removing the exhaust hangers? Because there's a short piece of flex exhaust allowing it some play? Just curious what you think as I plan on doing this service this evening and rather be prepared
Don’t do this .. this guys gonna be paying for exhaust leaks very soon
Better trick is don’t buy that junk!!
Do you think this could cause an exhaust leak between that point and the header bolts. That’s a lot of pressure somewhere between there.
Thank you !
I am a Mechanic ,you just saved me hrs !
Great tip....saw this afterwards! We just removed the pan on a '15 Yukon XL 4L60 w/out any of this (on the floor w/ front jacked up a little). Extracted the fluid, removed the filter, removed the gasket, then the pan slid out when rotating the rear of the pan to the passenger side. Took some patience, but it did work. Went back in the same way....not sure if cross-over pipe is same diameter on trucks???
2011 Tahoe same. I did not force anything....just tetris move the pan out of there.
Dumb move on GM's part.
Wonder if unbolting the trans mount nuts and jacking up the trans/transfer case would also give enough clearance?
Yes that works.
does not work , there is no flexibility from engine to transmission, by the way 2018 2 wheel drive the 2x4 wood will not work, no exhaust flex pipe by the headers.
Really appreciate it, thanks for sharing. I got a question regarding the frequency of changing the transmission fluid in terms of time not milage. I got a 2011, 1500 Seira pick up truck. The last time I changed the fluid was on 2015 and since then I only drove it 31k Mile. The transmission looks ok, level is also ok. Do you recommend changing the fluid?
Nah, didn't work for me. I had to drop the exhaust. Not even close on a 2017.
What if you loosen the transmission mount bolts and jack the tail end of the transmission up a little bit in conjunction with strapping the exhaust?
I agree I have a 2016 express van, and I attempted to replace fluid this weekend, and then boom....that pipe is right on top of the transmission pan bolts of the 6L90e. Zero room, and no flex at all...exaust will have to come out.
You're the man! Thank you for this!
Good job mine was a pain
All you have to do is remove the filter, and rotate the pan clockwise, it will come off no problem. SUCK the fluid out first! It makes a mess otherwise!
....brutal!!! and the customer later down the road will blame GM's exhaust manifold bolts for popping their heads off, not knowing some idiot had been putting stress on them in this manner. Idiotic! and lazy!
Thanks, I'm working on a 2020 GMC SIERRA 1500 6.2L 10 Speed Transmission so I can drop the pan and put in a new GM gasket.
Dude… if I could come through the internet and kiss you I would lol. I fought with the pan for over an hour and did this and it was out in less then a minute. THANK YOU!
Thanks. Not sure why auto manufacturers can’t make this stuff easy. I know how to do the filter gasket and solenoids in the transmission but the rear bolts of the pan are stupid to be polite as they are less than an inch from the exhaust shield that is below them. Can’t even get my finger in there to lossen the bolts and even though you can get the bolts out with a wrench, there’s no way you could get them back in afterwards. Why would they design something like this that needs to be serviced about every 50k??? Guess they want to charge a lot to do something that should be simple and stop people from being able to service their own vehicles. Appreciate the video but not the GM guys.
I would just unbolt the trans mount and jack the back of the transmission up. A lot easier than fighting rubber exhaust hangers.
I absolutely LOVE your video’s. You’ve become a motivation to me. Thank you 😆
Saved are ars 😂 Luckily, we had a flex pipe and we’re able to put a big Firemans bar in and pray down half an inch work like a charm. Thanks so much.
If you put a 2x4 between the exhaust and the floor of the truck. Take the nuts out of the trans mount and jack up the tail housing the pan will come right out. It keeps the exhaust down while the tranny moves up
Its really not that hard to just leave the pan there, plenty of room to move the pan to the side and remove the filter, a siphon pump to remove the last little bit in the pan, some rags to completely clean the inside of the pan, remove and clean the magnet and you're done.
That works I put a lot of force on the exhaust and still won’t come off so i just rotated the pan and removed the filter and cleaned up the pan, no problem
Subscribed , liked 👍 and comment . Thanks for sharing buddy 👍. I'm in the middle of my oil change right this minute
Just unbolt the trans mount and jack the back of trans up a couple inches. 5 minutes, done.
what about those of us who live in areas where road salt is the cause of rust issues & with a yuk like mine aged 07… couldn’t this do damage potentially?
That’s why I see so many broken exhaust flanges at manifold. Just take off Tran mount, raise up trans being care ful not to crunch any connection on top of trans
Amateur hour.... take the bolt out of the transmission mount. Jack up the tail shaft
This trick doesn't work everytime. I had it strapped as far as it would go and still had to pull the headers
guess ill have to do this on my 03 SS Silverado. having the same exact problem
Unbolt the the trans mount and use a screw jack to raise transmission up.
I wish I knew this when I installed an extra capacity oil pan on my tranny last year.
I'm so glad I have the 8l90 - pan comes off - no sweat!
Excellent my friend. Toma mi like. This video help me a lot
You don’t even need to move any exhaust. Drop the pan so far , pump out the existing oil in the pan , wipe the pan with paper towel, again and again till clean , put the new filter in . Done ✅ . Bolt back up, I have done this easily.
U don’t need to replace the seal?
Good idea
HOW ABOUT THE BYPASS VALVE ON A 2018 TAHOE LT 5.3 ? EASY JOB OR NAW ?
I'm putting a PPE aluminum pan in that has a drain plug and it is a tighter fit than the old pan so I will try this
It worked great.
That's not smart putting all that weight on the exhaust manifold if the car was older than that 2014 your only asking for trouble
im going to try it in 2 weeks. thank you.
Saves two hours to remove a few bolts from where the down pipe bolts to the exhaust manifold?
New England has really rusty Nuts and Bolts. You touch that stuff they snap
@@FlyingWheels oh wow yeah can tell the truck is 2014 has rusty hole in muffler
Use scissors jack on muffler
Thank you, thank you ,thank you!
Worked freaking awesome. 5min and done
Great job craig!
(rumble seat lol)
It worked great thanks
Very smart! And much needed.
Love Chevy Hacks. Thanx.
Great tip
You really don’t need to remove any hangers or 2x just put your tow strap on the exhaust and cross member
Thanks adios
Thanks Awesome.
Thank you!
Brilliant
You don’t need to remove anything other than the pan bolts. It slides out with a little bit of patience. 2 minutes tops
This video shows the consumers why to not buy a used car from these crooks !
I know right! Shame on us for doing a transmission fluid and filter service.
Or you could go to a dealer and they would just wash the pan clean suck out some fluid and add new fluid. If the pan has a drain plug they would change the fluid and wash the pan. After working 35 years at dealers I have seen EVERYTHING.
@@FlyingWheels you wouldn't touch that transmission if it didn't already have an existing tranny issue that you are trying to hide it (temporary) from innocent consumer by doing a flush !
@@res887 it's my own personal truck. 100k mile service weissenheimer
Wow. Mr Parker doesn't like used car dealers.
This is why Ford is King. What a shity design this is why I bought a Ford instead of some piece of crap GMC. changing the oil on my Ford is easier than changing it on my Nissan frontier Ford is King baby
Francisco Islas is that a ford that has no trans dipstick. The one that requires a pump to pump new fluid into it under the truck? At least gm gives you a dipstick up top to check and fill it
Changing oil is easy on any vehicle. It’s really not a poor design. A poor design is fords 5.4, 6.0, 6.2. Talk about shitty design 😂
Jantzen Moore ...mans got a point there...sparkplug stripping hunk of junks...sept the 4.6 motors...great stuff...
I rate this section a 5.3
Good luck on those failing turbos. Those Fords shift hard and you never know they're bad. I had a 2000 heilacoil city
What a fucking piece of shit, I'm selling mine and buying an older model. 🤣
