There are 4 types of Oh Hello songs. 1. Go adventure, now! 2. Cryptic yet wise advice probably from a ghost or an old family member 3. Poetic vent song 4. I really messed up guys Are there others?
This song is brilliant for a few reasons 1. Super relatable to everyone who is Christian but had a warped and twisted view of it growing up. 2. Plato's allegory of the cave 3. "The truth became a tool I held in my hand." References not only blindly using religion as an excuse for hate, but also the armor of God, a Christian metaphor for how God protects Christians and guidelines for how Christians should act.
I was introduced to Dear Wormwood months before I listened to this album, so hearing the motif that became the beginning of DW (in Prelude) was a huge burst of deja-vu as I realized that this wasn't foreshadowing, Prelude was a callback.
@@emmanuelperrault8584 I just think its good music. All the mainstream music is the same anyway. I don't like it because its gospel music, I like their take on the style. Even most gospel music on the radio is too similar and overused. This is a nice change.
I was young and naive As I was told, so I believed And I was told there's only one road that leads you home And the truth was a cave on the mountainside And I'd seek it out until the day I died I was bound and determined To be the child that you wanted But I was blind to every sign you left for me to find And the truth became a tool that I held in my hand I wielded it, but I didn't understand I got tired of giving more than you gave to me And I desired a truth I wouldn't have to seek But in the silence I heard you calling out to me
“I was told, theres only one road.” I grew up catholic/christian. Told there was ‘only one way to heaven.’ “And the truth was a cave…in the mountainside. And I’ll seek it out until the day I die.” I felt like forever I was searching for God. And this ‘cave’ I feel like represents the tomb Jesus was sealed in after he died. I was looking for God-for Jesus or whatever-but nothing made sense to me. I felt like I would never have a connection with God or a religion to follow. But then I found my own religion-one I connect with. And I am at peace.
*"I was bound and determined, To be the child that you wanted"* heard these lyrics and related immediately. Ive been a fan of TOH for a while now and cant believe im just now discovering this song. Y'all create a masterpiece with each song you write. Ive never heard a song of yours that I didnt like.
I understand that the Oh hellos songs are heavily influenced by C.S. Lewis, so this song always reminds me of Mark Studdok's redemption in "That hideous strength", I guess it's because the song is precisely about going home, going back to the Father down the long road.
This one's based on a novelette by Neil Gaiman called The Truth Is a Cave in the Black Mountains. After reading the story though, the connection seems vague and weak. Both great pieces of art but if the names weren't so similar I wouldn't believe they were connected at all
The line in this song about "blind to all the signs you left for me" reminds me of Jill Pole from The Silver Chair, who literally missed all the signs Aslan told her to follow
amazing band, i cant hardly comprehend the love and feelings in not only this song but the whole entire picture of this band and theyre background, and found loves and lost loves
I have probably already commented this video... but this song speaks so much to me that sometimes I just don't know what to feel... So grateful that this exists.
For anyone not aware, this like a first person point of view of Plato’s Allegory of The Cave. Republic is probably one of the greatest books ever written. It should be read by everyone
There is a reference to the Allegory of the cave to a certain extent but if you read the lyrics it's not a first person point of view of the story. It talks about coming back to the Truth found in God.
Only 8000 views? This song is on a study playlist I found a couple weeks back, and I swear I've listened to it about 8000 times just in that time span.
Such a beautiful song! It reminds me of Merlin from The Pendragon Cycle when he spent 50 years in the Celyddon Forest coming to terms with his relationship with God❤️
I'm pleased to see that The Oh Hello's have a bunch of good songs and not just hello my old heart to often bands have only one song I really like, but these guys are good.
You have to listen to these songs a few times to understand the lyrics iys beutiful i always walk away knowing a little more about the song, and myself
This reminds me of my dnd character, so I'm going to talk about them and the part of their story that relates to this song because I'm obsessed with this and the campaign they're in. Gel is a fighter who wants to make their mother proud. That's really all they want. As much as they tried they weren't able to read, the words got all mixed up in their head, so they weren't able to become a wizard like their mom. They became a runeknight instead, using magical runes to help them fight, but still felt like their mom wasn't proud of them. They knew their mom had lost some sort of artifact, and so they ventured off to find it. Maybe if they found it she would be proud. They were determined to get the artifact even if it meant they died, and refused to come home until they found it. They managed to convince themself it was the only way they could make their mother proud. 2 years into their adventures, they began getting letters from their wizard mom. Gel received a map from her that lead them and their party to a cave with runes preventing evil from entering it. Inside the cave was a ring- the artifact Gel was looking for. Gel and their party were teleported to their wizard mom's tower, where they gave the ring over to her. It was then revealed that it wasn't their real mom at all- she had died months ago, locked in the tower's basement. An evil lich had locked her down there and had taken her place, pretending to be her and tricking Gel into getting the magical ring for it. Gel is currently beating themself over the fact that they should've known it wasn't their mother (she never sent letters before, why would she start sending them now?), and over the fact that they handed a powerful artifact to a horrible monster.
Small brain: The Truth is a Cave is about Plato’s Allegory of the Cave Large brain: The Truth is a Cave is about Luke Skywalker Galaxy brain: The Truth is a Cave is about Batman

No, that's it.
You perfectly described the Oh Hellos.
Technically there are also the super religious songs, but they are completely compatible with the categories you mentioned
I wonder where my favorite song Hello My Old Heart fits in.
@@soiplayminecraft8751 Category 2 or 3. Or both. But to be honest, "Hello My Old Heart" is a strange case, since it's sort of a love song/ballad
I love this sooo much
How about Rio Grande? That one's my favorite but I can't really decide
This band is my current obsession. All their songs are pure gold.
Agreed
dude, I can say the same 7 years later... probably not a coincidence!
Dude same!!

I love seeing all the people who were also that one kid who did all the talking in English class down here in the comments.
Yep thats me rofl
Heck yeah, I don’t do ALL the talking but only because I don’t wanna take away anyone else’s opportunity to talk-

Seriously, like this band is so underrated. kids in my school need to listen to this stuff more often.
jayperson well it is chrisitan music. so it can't really be mainstream

Children who grew up in very religious, Christian families can relate to this song very well. (I’m sure other religions too)

I thought this was supposed to be based on The Truth Is a Cave in the Black Mountains by Neil Gaiman?

The lyrics.
Completely agree! By the end of both songs I have tears in my eyes, the lyrics are the most honest and relatable I have ever heard. Masterpieces!
Such a beautiful song! It reminds me of Merlin from The Pendragon Cycle when he spent 50 years in the Celyddon Forest coming to terms with his relationship with God❤️
this song makes my heart flutter.
The Gospel Coalition brought me here o/ Amazing song! The elder brother :')
I didn’t realize it was about the older brother in the Prodigal Son parable since the rest of the songs are about the younger. That’s so neat!
I'm pleased to see that The Oh Hello's have a bunch of good songs and not just hello my old heart to often bands have only one song I really like, but these guys are good.
I've always thought that this song is for the brother of the prodigal son. I haven't seen this idea discussed much though

Joane Fernandes yeah but that answer isn’t funny
@@joanebf I don't know, "The Truth is a Tool" is a bit too spicy a take for most Christians

Words cant describe how much I love this band.....
how can you guys be so perfect?
Pure soul - a rare find
This song makes me think of driving through the country with the most amazing woman ever...

I wonder how many other people knew what the Cave reference was before reading the comments--English Class paid off.
What grade do you read/learn about the allegory of the cave?
All I can say is YES!!
This song is one of my all time favorite songs...
Our AP Lang teacher showed us this when studying the Allegory of the Cave. So glad I was introduced to this band!
