One reason you want to get as close to the animal/deer as possible. Still no guarantee it won’t move because the reaction of a deer is incredible.

Always thought it might be a conditioned response to having been dive bombed by blackbirds all summer.

Hello dear friend, tonight I happened to see a review of the ESEE isula knives 8 years ago and I jumped to get one, do you still preserve them? And what do you currently think of them?

The speed of sound is 1,000+ feet per second. That means it arrives to the deer’s ear significantly faster than an arrow, thus giving the deer time to react ahead of the arrow.

New bowhunter here with question - as you say a deer can process information 4 times faster than humans. This I presume includes tracking an arrow flying towards them. So - they hear the bow which causes them to look and swivel ears quickly to that sound. They then see an arrow with big bright yellow spinning fletchings making a bit of noise flying towards them.
Given how fast they process information is it equivalent to us seeing a bright object flying at 40 fps towards us? 🤔 Pretty sure most people could duck or at least move a bit on seeing a highly visible object coming at that speed which is maybe equivalent to a deer ducking something doing 160 fps. Maybe do an experiment and use orange or brown fletchings that are not as visible and see if the reactions are less? Most ambush hawks falcons and owls are drab brown. I know it makes it harder to find your arrow etc but the positives may be better hits. Be interested in what you think. Keep up the great work!

Great point and great thought process. But from my experience the deer do not need to rotate ears or look. They hear the sound know something is not right and react. Its like a reflex. They don't run off from the shot. They duck and turn and when the arrow misses and hits the ground the deer calms down and carry on doing what they do. I don't think it's as visual as it is audio and 6th sense.

Dead on Jason. Duck and turn. They are flight animals.

As a guide one of the reasons why I liked guiding bowhunters was because there was usually pretty obvious evidence of the success of the shot. From what I saw with the animal behavior (animal kicked out, sat down, reacted one or another) and the forensics of a post shot investigation its a bit easier to give good or bad news to bowhunters.
I lost count how many gun hunters SWORE they made a perfect shot even though I saw dust kick up 10 feet from animal in the spotter.
Bowhunters for me tended to be the most self critical on a hunt. They always wanted to know exactly where and how which was usually a good thing but I thought it was funny how many thought they made good shots only to tell them they did not hit fur and how many times people were convinced they missed when we walk up to a very dead animal.

Great information and appreciate the comment. All of that makes sense. And guilty of think I hit when I didn't myself. When we shoot and see where the arrow is flying and the the deer drops and pops back up, from our view with our eye speed of 1/50th of a second we see it as the arrow passing thru a stationary animal.

i definitely have been blessed by as many shots shots gone right that were off, as shots ive taken thinking im doing everything right and had an issue. also, arrows are definitely way louder than most bows down-range.
