There is actually a sort of followup to that intro, where Zee Bashew wakes up and realizes that JoCrap not only burned the building he was in down, but where he kept his replacement spellbooks too.
1. The Wizard teacher in the beginning is Zee Bashew who I gave a video for a couple of days ago in a comment. Definitely worth watching his Animated Spellbook episodes. Alas, he has taken some offline for legal reasons (apparently). 2. "Bolt, fire, ice" There are plenty of enemies who are immune and/or resistant to "energy" damage (acid, cold, fire, lightning and sonic). So no, those AREN'T the only three you need. Force damage is the least resisted/immune damage type, so a simple ol' Magic Missile build can rule the day, especially when upcast and you have bonuses to improve their individual damage. 3. 2:52 - INTelligence is the primary stat for wizards, which means just about anything else is a dump stat. CONstitution is what I consider a secondary requirement for extra hitpoint and to keep you from failing concentration checks (D&D mechanics!), and DEXterity directly affects your armour class since most wizards can't wear armour. But yes, many people consider CHArisma to be a dump stat and put it at 10, along with STRength and WISdom. Sorcerers cast spells from CHArisma though, so they're the more influential casters since CHA is the stat you do diplomacy, deception, and intimidation from. Which is why Chad Sorcerer is the popular kid and wizards are virgins. He steals all the girls and tells everyone you stink, and can convince them of it. 4. MOST reagents you need for spells are inconsequential costs. Fireball's guano and sulfur is covered by a one time acquisition in the beginning of the game (a component pouch, part of your class' starting equipment). SOME spells do have a gold cost though and that's a component you can't ignore. A 500gp diamond to cast Raise Dead for example, absolute requirement, and possibly the subject of an entire quest since most villages don't just have big honkin' chunks of immaculately cut ice laying around. 5. Fireball is NOT the answer to everything. Sometimes you want to burn that one person over there in a gunpowder and rum soaked environment and not explode yourself in the process, in which case Scorching Ray is the answer. Sometimes you want to laugh at people hurting themselves as they try to get close, so Wall of Fire is the answer. And yes Zee's right, illusions or Prestidigitation are really useful, even if it's only to cast FIREworks, because convincing a bunch of greedy dopes to group together around a fake glittering chest of gold is a great way to set them up for fireball. 6. Wizards are very often tied to one of the schools of magic, and each has a fantastic set of bonuses as you level. Evocation for example at one point very early on gives you the ability to say "that guy, that guy, and that guy, don't burn them. Everyone else though go boom" and cast a fireball in the middle of your allies which will ignore them. The rare exception is the War Mage who basically trades spells for defence or "eats" spells to turn them into incidental force damage against enemies.
I still remember my kitsune wizard who in the first session of the campaign we were in was the first person to drop to 0 HP. Not in battle mind you, but from failing an athletics check while trying to climb a rope and took a fall that took all of my lv.1 6hp...
He scored a zero on the magic test but every answer was “Fireball”. You mean to tell me not ONE question could have been solved by Fireball? Test was rigged.
Currently playing an abjuration wizard with a party that has a paladin, orc fighter, a monk, and a rogue. Somehow I'M THE TANK OF THE PARTY. Not all wizards are frail ;)
"Lightning, Fire, and Ice are all I need!" il'l like to inform you about any spell that allows you to trow objects from a area. I used a custom cantrip, shape air (shape water for air) and by trowing the fangs of a gigant monster that deal 3d8 dmg each i murderd my dm plans. I had 49 of them and i trown all of them at the same gigant enemy, leading to 147d8 dmg, instakilling his boss encounter
Memes apart, fireball is indeed a incredible spell, specially when you get it (around 5th level). It can pretty much clean up a room with it's damage and reach. But speaking of the wizards themselves, if you ever play a table that is going to be up to the later levels, this class is one of shiniest (along with it's other caster friends), allowing you even to transform into a Dragon, to summon a blade that cause some great damage, getting immune to all damage types, and one of my favorites: Getting advantage on every roll because you have foreseen every second of the next 8 hours.
its not that Wizards in particular have low charisma, instead charisma is a dump stat on anyone who isn't a charisma caster. (Bard, Paladin, Sorcerer, Warlock, ect)
In most Final Fantasy games you have more than just Fire, Ice and Lightning though. Cure and Life are good for your party and, along with holy, are good aginst undead enemies. You also have Wind Earth, Meteor, Flare, Sleep, Blind, Esuna, Protect, Shell, Reflect, etc. In some of the games you can even gain enemy abilities like bad breath and dealth
I remember the Rune Of Portals costing 50s before discounts. Which was fairly eyugh, considering the 100g for apprentice riding and a mount was an nigh insurmountable hurdle until well after you hit 40, and lots of vanilla players never got enough money for Journeyman.
It DID make you appreciate the mount when you finally did get it, though. My priest still has his original Brown Skeletal Horse in the list of random favorite mounts.
Oh you definitely can have a charismatic Wizard if you want... Just that unlike Sorcerers, Charisma is no the spellcasting stat for wizards (its Intelligence). Thus, the stat you want to maximise is not the one that help in social stuff but it doesn't mean wizard get shit charisma by default.... All depends on the scores you get in each stats at character creation 😉 Oh and yes, Wizard have the least HP at lvl 1 : traditionally, they get 6 + Constitution modifier... A standard mace does 1d6+ Strength mod in bludgeoning damages... Wizard CAN get one shot easily at 1rst lvl
Ah.. War Mage... If you really wanna piss your DM off and make them hate you more than the tanky paladin. Jocat: Just fireball My Abjuration wizard with maxed Int by lv 4 and potentionally 21 ac with mage armor, cloak of protection and shield: just counterspell.
You can have a high Charisma Wizard if you're not hell bent of min-maxing every last stat point. Likewise, you can have skills like persuasion with the right background. The good thing about D&D character creation is that you are free to play around and not automatically go with the base clichee. I currently play a Barbarian with a Charisma of 14 and trained in Persuasion, and he is the go-to character when talking to most of the common people (Folk Hero background). He's one of the most fun characters I have been playing recently, even though he is not optimized to the max.
@@Squeekysquid It doesn't always have to be either of the extremes. For example, I am currently playing a Barbarian with a Charisma of 14 (point buy, so it was a deliberate decision and not just lucky high rolled scores to distribute). I still hit things really well. I could probably be more effective by a small margin if I had dropped the Charisma, but I doubt the character would be as much fun. Sure, I don't need that Charisma or proficiency in Persuasion to be effective in a fight but it gives the character a lot of flavor. And just to be clear, there is no right or wrong in these situations, it's an issue about what the group wants. Does a group and DM want to focus on challenging and optimized combat and not much care about things beyond optimized builds? Absolutely viable! Does a group want characters who are more believable as people, with some unique quirks and stats that are more "natural" rather than optimized to whatever their role in combat is? Also perfectly viable! As long as everybody at the table is having fun, they're not playing it wrong.
The best caster class in D&D, in my opinion. And despite the jokes in video, they are very versatile. Not to mention you get much better spells than fireball, like wish, which lets you wish your target was hit by a fireball. (Can I get a bunch of JUST FIREBALL replies to this comment, please?)
Oh Lord, I remember when getting silver was a common reward for levels 1-35, and the only way you can get gold for free was to join a guild, raid the bank, and leave the guild. 🤣
Why did Jocat fold after trolls disliked his very likable "Girls" song/rap? Everybody was propping him! I get it! Internet poison is bad!! But when you have these mages buffing you.... WTF?!?!?!

Correction: The best song he had done up to that point.
