- The brigade of the Southern Command are deployed in Sligo for a military exercise to prepare for an attack on Ireland.
The Southern Command is the Irish army’s strategic reserve, held back at the early stages of a conventional battle. They are only called into action when a decisive strike is called for.
In Sligo, the Men from Cork’s 4th infantry battalion, Limerick’s 12th battalion, and other reserve units carried out an exercise in the Ox Mountains. Fighter jets, spotter planes and helicopters were also called upon to provide vital fire power.
The drill was carried out to test the soldiers in the event of an attack on Ireland.
The enemy, that thinly disguised super power known as “Red Lands” had been repulsed.

Sickening condescension in the entire report. RTE never changes.
Are you clonmel Thomas
I have great nephew called Thomas .
Ironically Ireland had a more powerful military then compared to now
Post-WW2 millsurp?
No it certainly doesn't.
They actually had a fantastic rifle back then. FN was very durable and accurate.
Trained on both the FN and Bren, both great weapons 👍
@@eoindee7007 same as. Those were the good old days!
@@newforestgump8926 they sure were...Great times, Great comrades and great memories 👏 👍 👌
Its actually been reintroduced as a designated marksmans weapon. And a line thrower in the Navy hehe.
Have a fantastic rifle today too, Steyr AUG
There goes the fence...
Can someone please forward this to Vladimir Putin - just so he knows not to be trying anything on with us....! 😎
How are those 6 counties doing there?
Maybe another hundred years and you'll get em back!
@@jamescurran6277 We'll have them soon politically
@@jamescurran6277 took 800 years for the 26 we are patient and time is on our side
To be honest this looks better than Russian attempts so far in Ukraine.

You bitter inbred hun.
Bejaysus...
The FCA Didn’t have the FN until 1990 , I was One of the first to come back to my sub unit to train Them after my NCO course in that year they had the 303 up to that point.
The only 'army' in the world where you could go out on maneuvers and still be home, in the house for your dinner.
The Russians vowed to invade Ireland, just as soon as they figured out where it was 😂
Oh that's not Britain.Really? That's the country of Ireland? Then what's that one?( Points at isle of man)
Stay off the crack pipe buddy
Was in the army back then in cork 4th battalion b company .
Did you ever serve in Cootehill Sean....?

Fair play joe .
In the border 12th battalion I should have said .
if the air corps had jets back in the 70's when the country was broke, how come we can't afford them now when the country is relatively wealthy?
Good question ,well the reality is, that's a load of anti Russian propaganda probably endorsed by the US embassy...and the irish army with our with out 2 or 3 jets would not defend a match box for 10 minutes ...so we should stay neutral ...I'd be all down for buying new jets ....the sweds make good affordable ones...they could be used for defence but most likely only good for creating good pilots for later on in the travel industry...air lingus etc.
Good heavens all this nonsense talk about the Russians attacking is so silly ,45 years plus of this thrash media 🤦♂️ ....if we would stop facilitating nato they most certainly never even think about ireland ....close down rte ,its long past its sell by date ....
That is a fantastic moustache.
For a moment, I thought they were east German troops
Very similar helmet
Not really, the kitbash is too British for the likes of the Soviet equipped NVA, the Volksarmee wore a khaki and brown camo called Strichtarn. The NVA stahlhelm was the M-1956, this bone dome was the either the Mk.3 or the Mk.4.

Craic Troops I'd say alright
Great to have been part of all of it before mobile phones and the internet was a thing. It's just a shell of an organization now everybody with an opinion and many acting like they want to be American soldiers from the movies and all constantly on their phones to video this and video that. The great piss ups and the comradery pretty much nothing like it was and when the decisions were made with the disbanding of this battalion and that battalion it's is nothing like it was. And yes the FN is a better weapon 7.62 against the augs 5.56 il take a NATO ball 7.62 rifle to battle any day over the nato ball 5.56 round. Say what you want but they even had jets as old as they were now they have none not even a small number of 8. Instead the RAF will provide the air cover. Oh but there is the usual we don't need them that's ok until you do and where do you get them then out of a sheep's arse I suppose.
And 600 either dead or wonded
This was obviously a training exercise right
No, it was real.
What happened
The army was conducting drills in preparation for a possible British invasion from the north.
cap'n mannering sir
Don't panic. Don't panic 😂
Fouga Magister...
Beautiful jet
Looks like some thing out of Dad's Army
It does a bit!
Putin is very nervous,do my think about attacking ireland
Great to see the army are ready to protect oil profits that flow out of the country
What oil?
@@danielrooney7964 Ireland produces about 300 barrels of oil per day.andalso produces oil in its natural gaseous state at the rate of close to 5000 Million Cubic feet per year. Not bad for a small island.
Don't tell the Americans about the OIL.
I didn't realise RTE produced comedy of this quality. The aircraft are trainers. The weapons are WW2 stock. These lads, however keen, would be pushed to hold back the Vienna Boys Choir.
You are only showing your ignorance here Boy, the weapons were not WW2. The rifle was the FN 7.62, one of the finest weapons ever made.
As to the Vienna Boys Choir, check out " The Siege ofJadotville "and you will see what the lads could hold back.....
Don't ever insult men who served this country before you were born, Boy.
Irish men defeated the British Empire next door with even less. The FN was state of the art then and considered the best rifle in the world. The aircraft could be and were fitted with machine guns, rockets and bombs.
Well done for demonstrating your national self loathing. Your OBE and 18 facemasks are in the post.
FN Fal was not in production until the 50s so you are mistaken
The Fouga Super Magister jets were attack aircraft assigned to the light strike squadron and not the Air Corps College like the Marchetti trainers, although they were occasionally requested by the College for certain advanced training.
The weapons are far from WWII stock, FN FAL automatic battle rifles are very different than the bolt action Lee Enfield SMLEs from WWII.
The sad thing here is that the army in this video is better equipped than the defence forces of today with a two ship navy, air force of propeller trainers and army without tanks.
very funny very funny
Geeez something out of Dad's Army
The guards😂,look what happened the British embassy, the garda fools couldn't control unarmed civvies,.
Why weren't they fighting the murdering British paras?
COS THERE SHIT😂
Because the Irish army was completely ill equipped for combat with the British army and would have been defeated very quickly, with a likely British invasion of the Republic in response
Why don't you fuck off and get a history lesson
@@trpsarge You're another West Brit lickspittle.
@edward smith not really as,I served in the defence forces and understand why the,Irish state didn't take action as it would have a bad situation worse. In 1972 the defences forces were marginally better than they had been in 1942 and wouldn't made it 100 yards across the border without having suffered heavy casualties and made the situation worse for catholics in the North. And they are the facts but then again when did facts matter when dealing with your ilk
My god this is comical to watch
Men playing at being soldiers.
The men who were killed in Lebanon and the Congo are no longer playing at being soldiers, just incase you forgot.......
@@joebrennan.4389 I meant this lot only. Pity though they couldn’t have come to help the Catholics in the north during the pogroms of 1969 |1970. Could have done with our army then. Guess they were needed elsewhere.
@@annrobinson7766 Don't blame the Army for something it had no control over. The decision not to invade the North was a political one.
Blame the Government of the day not the Army lads who would have willingly gone to help the Catholic people, had they been ordered to.
@@joebrennan.4389 yes I’m sure you are right Joe. Governments are only looking after themselves.
The army did help us, they gave their barracks as accommodation for refugees from the north at the time.
@@annrobinson7766In recently declassified documents, it was revealed that after the British refused to send troops to protect Catholics in Northern Ireland and also vetoed an Irish request to send UN peacekeeps into Northern Ireland, the Irish government asked the army to draw up plans for invading the north.
The army came up with "Operation: Armageddon," where the crack soldiers of the Irish army would infiltrate the North and strike at key targets in Belfast and other Loyalist areas. British forces would rush to defend these locations and then the regular troops would cross the border and take the three border counties.
It's likely that the Irish army would have succeeded in taking the North if only the British forces stationed there are factored in but thankfully the plan was rejected as it would have been suicide with superior British forces ready to counter-attack from mainland Britain.
Whats this about
FN was fantastic but wtf is this video? Rep of Ireland has no navy to speak of, no air force and about 2k decent troops...
This is 1977 so they were better equipped for the time than they are now.
