I've enjoyed many versions but never heard this, Britten's own recording. The shock is the dance like first movement ... almost Tchaikovsky in its rythms. Truly one of the great conductors ... in addition to his other God-given gifts.
I'm 16 so not really in my late teens yet, but I'm playing the frolicsome finale this year--and did the sentimental saraband last year (I absolutely hated the saraband because of the time signature but it sure does slap)
In the Sentimental Saraband, I hear Bach's influence from the 2nd movement of Bach's Concerto for 2 violins. Still beautiful what Britten did with the tune and it's poignant variations. What a great homage.
Can I just say... as a violinist who has played this twice the second movement is WAY harder than it sounds. I was first chair and I struggled to keep the pizz up to tempo. RIP the rest of my section XD
It's much easier to play with the thumb, holding the violin in your lap like a mandolinist, rather than with the forefinger. It's supposed to be a Simple Piece, and I believe violin was actually taught this way in the past: Learning to pluck the tune, In Tune, so you can see the actual distance between the notes and where your fingers need to be, learning the bow movements on Open strings, then combining the two.
i feel u 😭 i plucked with 2 fingers which helped a little but the room my ensemble performed it in was super cold.. i remember one time during rehearsal our conductor made us sing the piece. had a blast doing that.
Just played this for my college's fall concert. Took it just a tad slower! That spiccato on the 4th movement is brutal! (Non- music major bass player POV of course ;) )

Lovely of you to provide the score for conductors and orchestral musicians, (&ec.). It would, however, be so much more helpful were you to “scroll the score” at a rate that allows for musicians to “Read Ahead”. This enables more efficacious fingering, oft times waylaying potential intonation difficulties. Additionally, as concert masters and section principals, we very much appreciate the importance of procuring the score so that we can coordinate bowing styles and techniques, interrelating them across-the-board. Again, please allow me to thank you for your fine contribution to “A Musician’s Good Day“.
played boisterous bouree, playful pizzicato and sentimental saraband (i was violin 2) for nyssma majors this past year, and we got gold!!! (granted, we did a split-level 5 and 6 program but still, it was the most fun ive had in a long time and i personally think we sounded great. mostly positive comments from the adjudicators as well!!!) god, the animato in boisterous bouree was such a pain in the butt 😭
I'm going to play the Simple Symphony and St. Paul's Suite at a club next time, and when I look at the comments, it's interesting to see so many of the same people. I need to do something to prevent the accelerating speed when playing the second movement...
I am a high school orchestra teacher and interested in purchasing both the parts and the score for string orchestra version. Please let me know where to purchase them. Thanks!
Yes - it could be a coincidence, but Arthur Wood's Barwick Green - the Archer's Theme - was composed in 1924 (from his "My Native Heath" suite) - 10 years BEFORE Britten released this. Arthur Wood's Barwick Green therefore may well have influenced this movement's 7-note second subject.
20 years old, although he was probably no older than 9 years old when he originally wrote the themes he later put into this work. (The earliest referred works are dated 1923.)
im in 10th grade and play viola and we have to play this for our schools spring concert,, pls pray for me 😭😭
Good luck
So how was it??
I hope it went well, in ninth and my chamber strings group didn’t have a violist so we had to make two violinists be violists
This easy 😭
9th and we have to play it for competition help ( upright bass player)

Playing this in my junior year of high school was a gift! Now, as a senior, we are playing the St. Paul’s Suite!
Lol, I played at Paul’s suite as a junior and I’m playing simple symphony rn.

Oh my God. I LOVE THE ST. PAUL SUITE!!!! ITS SO FUN

I am rather ashamed to say how _surprised_ I was to find just how much I actually loved this.
Same here. I remember not enjoying playing this but it is quite beautiful, especially the 3rd movement
Ashamed?....Why?

We can all agree that the 4th movement is the best, period.
Well I always preferred the second movement, it feels much more like typical Britten writing, infused with Scottish vibes and intelligent development.
Can I just say... as a violinist who has played this twice the second movement is WAY harder than it sounds. I was first chair and I struggled to keep the pizz up to tempo. RIP the rest of my section XD

Do I hear signs of Ravel in this piece? Or Elgar?
I think you hear Britten in this piece.
Possibly, Britten wrote this piece based on the pieces he heard as a kid
The second movement is similar to the start of the second movement of Ravel's F major string quartet.
@@Ling__Ling__ Seems very likely, from reading David Matthews' biography.

2nd movement archer theme anybody?
It’s really the first 8 measures, then it goes into deeper detail
Yes - it could be a coincidence, but Arthur Wood's Barwick Green - the Archer's Theme - was composed in 1924 (from his "My Native Heath" suite) - 10 years BEFORE Britten released this. Arthur Wood's Barwick Green therefore may well have influenced this movement's 7-note second subject.
Comment so I can find this again
Last movement very operatic, these opera composers can't help their operatic skills going into their instrumental works.
Where can I get this edition? Parts and score?
You will have to buy it, presumable from Boosey and Hawkes who is Britten’s main publisher.

Can anyone help me figure out fingers for the first chord and the A note before? I cannot
Just do it in 3rd position- 1 on the A’s and 034 for the chords
Someone should have talked Britten out of the alliterative movement titles. Just nix the adjectives.
