The Simple Symphony, Op. 4, is a work for string orchestra or string quartet by Benjamin Britten. It was written between December 1933 and February 1934 in Lowestoft, using bits of score that the composer had written for the piano as a young teenager, between 1923 and 1926. It was composed for string orchestra and received its first performance in 1934 at Stuart Hall in Norwich, with Britten conducting an amateur orchestra...

    Lovely of you to provide the score for conductors and orchestral musicians, (&ec.). It would, however, be so much more helpful were you to “scroll the score” at a rate that allows for musicians to “Read Ahead”. This enables more efficacious fingering, oft times waylaying potential intonation difficulties. Additionally, as concert masters and section principals, we very much appreciate the importance of procuring the score so that we can coordinate bowing styles and techniques, interrelating them across-the-board. Again, please allow me to thank you for your fine contribution to “A Musician’s Good Day“.

      Just do it in 3rd position- 1 on the A’s and 034 for the chords

    played boisterous bouree, playful pizzicato and sentimental saraband (i was violin 2) for nyssma majors this past year, and we got gold!!! (granted, we did a split-level 5 and 6 program but still, it was the most fun ive had in a long time and i personally think we sounded great. mostly positive comments from the adjudicators as well!!!) god, the animato in boisterous bouree was such a pain in the butt 😭

    I'm going to play the Simple Symphony and St. Paul's Suite at a club next time, and when I look at the comments, it's interesting to see so many of the same people. I need to do something to prevent the accelerating speed when playing the second movement...

      Well I always preferred the second movement, it feels much more like typical Britten writing, infused with Scottish vibes and intelligent development.
