IGN Did The Invincible DIRTY

  • The first-person space adventure game based on the 1964 novel by Stanisław Lem is finally here. IGN's review was less than stellar, but that shouldn't matter, right? I think the game is fantastic, its atompunk sci-fi setting is immersive, and its story engrossing. Crafted by Starward Industries, it's a special little game. So then why is IGN's review so... dismissive? Is it just a difference of opinion? Or something else? This is my review of The Invincible on PS5 and my critique of IGN's review.

The Invincible was pretty darn good. You covered all the points I would make. I was worried in the early announcement and press interviews when the Devs said it would be a retelling of the original. Luckily, it was instead a prequel and told a bit more than just the original story. I'm still torn on the Cold War undertones of the story. It's a hill that every atompunk story will die on, and thus feels repetitive and unoriginal, but at the same time the writers used it to bolster Lem's original story. It really hanmers home the absolute scale of the Invincible and Condor's power and the idea of them representing the pinnacle of human creation (similar to the USG Ishimura in Dead Space). It also calls forward some good questions, like why DID the ships have weapons of (literal) mass destruction aboard?
In other news, Kanaju, I know you're a busy man, but as someone who appreciates good, complex, sci-fi writing, I have a couple game recommendations
    - If you have PSVR2, Journey to Foundation. Gameplay is okay. Shooting gallery combat and janky VR physics, but vastly outweighed by absolute stunning setpeices (besting NMS VR at times), high VR accessibility options, and most importantly, a carefully crafted story with a cast of deep and unique characters, important choices, and writing that feels straight from Asimov's hand. If you're a fan of the I, Robot/Foundation universe, this is a must-play. If not, it's a good introduction
    - Outer Wilds (not The Outer Worlds, also a favorite of mine). I feel you may have played and mentioned this one in a video before but that might be wrong. Outer Wilds is hands down one of the best games I've ever played. A flawless masterpiece. Interesting, unique puzzles and a story that will easily have you in tears by the credits and many moments of shock beforehand. A strange juxtaposition of everything No Man's Sky is. But it's important to go in completely blind if you can. It's an experience that will leave you wanting more, but it's one you can only experience once for the first time

Thanks for the detailed comment! I haven't read the book myself, but I'm certainly interested to since playing the game. Seeing that it may follow after the events of the game sounds fascinating.
I appreciate the recommendations too! I don't have a PSVR2 yet, but when I get one Journey to Foundation is on the list. I loved The Outer Worlds. I gave The Outer Wilds a try once, but I fell off after having some frustration with the controls. I've heard only great things about it though. I'll probably give it a proper shot after the semester ends in December. It seems like the kind of experience I would enjoy.
Thanks again for taking the time to watch and write!

@@Kanaju a shame. That's most people's complaint about Outer Wilds, the controls. Yeah it's a bit janky, but sometimes it makes for funny moments.
As for PSVR2, hoo boy just wait until you see No Man's Sky. Nothing like PS4VR. The headset's haptic feedback does wonders, rumbling when entering atmosphere or when a Titan Worm bursts from the ground.
I hope you and your wife had a good Thanksgiving!

I actually had the same issue with textures on my PC, and brought it up in their feedback discord channel, as did others. However, the first hotfix solved this issue 100% and fixed a couple crashes for me. So, it may very well have been the game's issue, but unintentional.

I have never heard of nor seen this game until just now. From how you compare and contrast, I 100% agree with you. It seems like the entire point of the game is supposed to be a narrative, exploration, narrative story. When the reviewer's review is so far off the majority of the player base, the review is probably incorrect. It sounds like he played it, had problems, and went afk or something.

Its kinda ridiculous hearing all those comments from the IGN reviewer. I facepalmed when i saw the part about being slow when carrying a body, like duh, of course your slow when your carrying a whole ass body

I'll never understand how they chose that clip in particular. Was it simply the slowest they could find? Did they not realize what was in the footage? Just a strange choice on their end. Thanks for watching!

It is human nature to be reluctant to change an original decision regardless of new or changed information that may cause the decision to be dismissed or changed based on this new info. Knowing these habits should be a cause for the recipient of the original info to dismiss any and all decisions made by the original producer of that information after the problems are realized. I liked this game but realize it's not for everyone and may seem tame compared to a fast paced shooter or other games with a much faster pace. Maybe they should have given this assignment to someone more suitable to this type of game.

Sounds like very irresponsible reviewer… there’s multiple reasons why this is the case
1: does not know what game he is playing
2: playing on broken PC (graphic card)
3: removed his review but to maintain face he persisted to keep his broken push version of it.
4: did not give the game ample chance to try every feature.
5: did not show the games true character.
These reasons are enough for me to not trust IGN in the future I will pass this on to many other people that are IGN fans perhaps they will change their mind. In the grand scheme of things I enjoyed this video (like I enjoy all videos) and I hope you get better soon.

IGN doing weird game "journalism" while creating a lot of empty clickbait articles or unneccessary political drama? Real shocker discovery.
But seriously, i can't recall a single instance from my memory where i took one of their articles serious. Many of them have made me laugh. But they are not as bad as kotaku, which is a solid C-Tier level site.

I haven't played this game yet. I might or might not like it, I don't know. My issue with IGN is that they showed many time that their integrity is flexible. They give good score to average/borderline mediocre AAA, but really bad score to good indie or AA game or challenging game. I know it can be subjective to make a review, but you need to based your evaluation on facts, on data, not just an impressions. The fact that the reviewer didn't seem to understand the basic of the game and had graphics issues and didn't change their score just show how lazy and unprofessional he or she is. Why are game company still going to IGN for their exclusive to give more traction to this outlet is incomprehensible. Everyone should keep away from IGN until they sort their stuff.

  • @Blitnock

The _only_ possible honest response from IGN to discovering that the game was played on a defective system would be to have another reviewer redo the review. What they did was sickeningly lazy.
The whole situation reminds me of when Linus reviewed the cooler from the small hardware developer and installed it wrong. Then he doubled down on his bad review.
IGN displays the same hubris and incompetence. Shame on IGN!

Well let's be honest the same ign gave the playstation portal(a game streaming only tablet with two half motionsence controllers stuck onto it yet missing a internet browser for $200 give ir take) an 8(a higher score than the 7,5 the steamdeck got). I hope ign wil have to close it's doors because of the blatand bought reviews that get good marks vs the bad reviews of the games they even got for free...
