***ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
It's important to select the proper extension springs for the weight of your garage door. Most people don't know how to choose the right replacement garage door spring or that there was even a difference in garage door replacement springs.
People always ask... "what garage door extension spring size do I need" ? When in fact they should be asking... "What tension of garage door extension spring do I need" ?
All garage door extension springs come in the same length basically. I think they get confused with the garage door torsion spring that is above some garage doors. These are two different types of doors and applications.
When getting new garage door spring for these types of doors and application you need only worry about the right spring for the weight of your garage door.
So the most reliable way is to measure the weight of the garage door with a bathroom scale. For example my garage door weighed 140 pounds. Therefore it takes an extension spring that is painted dark blue on one end of the garage door spring.
In this video I show you a chart that is on the box my springs came in.
I hope this video helps you with how to choose the right replacement garage door spring, for your garage door.

Very good information. We had to do a test on our garage door and learned this
Good stuff, not many folks know about weighing their garage doors to get the proper weight of spring.
@@GettingItDoneNorthOf7 we had to do it when we were selling our house
Thanks Roland👍😁💞

Your welcome Alyssa! Not many people know, a spring is just a spring right. How would we know.
any idea as to the average size/color/other torsion coils(the type you wind) for a 16x7 aluminum insulated(pretty minimalistic) door? or after weighing is it similar? this video is pretty straight forward but most the material I've seen for sizing the torsion coils involves knowing what the originals were(I don't have them, the person who sold me the door used, gave me 2 mismatched so I assume theirs broke or they never had them; I'm still looking at other videos/etc) or mention sizes of coils/etc; currently I have the ones off my tin 16x7 door which will likely work temporary but I know they're overkill:P(the plan for now is try 15~ quarter winds rather than 30 and see what happens; if they ends up working perfectly than I'll just leave em till they break:P)
Hi. Wonder if you can help me. I'm thinking of doing a High Lift conversion. About 10-12". How do I find the right replacement spring? Do you know of any resouce I can use? i have a torsion spring setup. Thanks
Well done
Tank ya!
love this series you've created for easy how to. smart stuff. not many would even know where to begin. 👍🤍
Thanks Peggy! I have a couple more video in this series coming out.
How much tension should be on garage door springs when the door is open? barely enough to keep them from sagging?
We are in the process of getting a new door this week.
Good stuff Mack!
Thumbs up great info take care catch you later
Thank you MrG, catch you later
Thanks for the tips. Very helpful, why you flipping us off?
Cannot find torsion springs for 7x16ft, weighs 255lbs. Currently has two springs 207x2x20. Felt like these were not strong enough to balanced door half open. Any guidance would be appreciated.
Is it a regular non insulated door? If it is then the 207 should be good just put 28 or 29 quarter turns
How about choosing the Torsion Springs? Is that by weight too?
Yes the springs come in different weights according to the door
I'm trying to figure out how both loops could be broken...?
if you chose a bigger spring that's fine right? should in theory last longer
If it's to big maybe the door will be hard to close for the door opener
I only have one bad spring, should I replace both?
Yes the other spring is likely getting weak as well.
@@GettingItDoneNorthOf7 I replaced both. It wasn't that hard. Now it's working much better and I didn't have the nightmare of the garage door not going down all the way after new springs.
Thanks for the video.
I read that in the comments section somewhere.
Is it weird the springs are painted red?
How do you lift your garage door if your spring is already broken?
Strong friends
My garage door weight is 140LBS AND A SEE A SPING ON AMAZON FOR $200 IT HAVE RED PAINTING ON THE END, YOU THINK I SHOULD BUY IT
Do they show you the different weights of springs? They should show you which spring matches your garage door.
