    aren't bearings supposed to be calculated from north, so if you have N 20 W, it would be 360 - 20 and that answer would be the bearing right? *this is because one quadrant or the space between each cardinal point is 90 degrees, so for all 4 it would be 360.*

    Why isn't the angle under 53° in problem 4 37°. I know why it's 26.2, but why don't we use the method 90-57 for this one?

    • @martinoa
      @martinoa 5 лет назад +2

      His drawing makes it look like it is creating a 90º angle with E, but it is not. If you look at the distances and angle of the problem and draw it correctly, there would still be another, smaller angle underneath the 26.2º angle.

    Hello professor. In the last problem, I have the similar question to the first question about how far the boat is from the island, but my question adds asks for that after 1.5hrs of sailing (assume the boat travels at 36 miles/hr). So is there anything we can do to that 1.5 hrs? where do we put in it the calculation?

    Why can’t u use sin ratio to find x for question 1? I used x/sin 20=300/sin 90 and got x was 102.6. I’m confused on why you would use cosin there...

    • @oluwatoyinoyemade7384
      @oluwatoyinoyemade7384 5 лет назад

      You can use law of sines to solve this problem, but it's more work. also, you would want to use x/sin40 since 50+40=90 (right triangles corollary). Since you're given the angle and the hypotenuse and want to find the side adjacent to the angle, it's fastest to use cosine. cos(angle) = adj/hyp, so cos50=x/300. Doing it this way also means you're only using given information, thereby avoiding mathematical errors when trying to calculate missing parts as you did when trying to use x/sin20. Hope this helps.

      Isn’t it because the question asked for the bearing and not the distance? If you want to find the distance then you use Pythagoras theorem, but in the question it asked for the bearing the boat should take to travel to the island so you need to find the angle instead of the side
