Did you refill your oil recently? We had a similar issue last week where we hit the accelerator and smoke came out but became less and less over time and found the problem to be that we overfilled the oil and it was just burning off in the engine and stuff and creating smoke. Also aligned with the sudden occurrence as we drove fine beforehand
I was thinking maybe it's a oil leak in the turbo but that's also a good guess

if the turbo is just blown its a perfect oppertunity to swap in something like gt28rs or 2871r but of course your going to need z32 maf/larger injectors/high flow pump/some sort of tune or enthalpy type reflash.probably just the oil seal inside the turbo you can also get a rebuild kit and replace the seals

ive had my turbo s13 12 years and only left me stranded twice which were my own faults,one was from sucking water from puddle into maf and just needed to dry out the second was intercooler got caught on curb ripping it off,both situations i was able to drive home after a little work.far more reliable then even these new cars.to put things in prospective my sister has 2020 jeep with 30k miles and its spent 4 months in shop for repairs

My guess is the problem is turbo related. The turbo gets oil circulated through it to keep it lubricated, so I think the cause of all that smoke is the turbo got worn down enough to allow oil into the hot side. Which would also explain the backfire as the oil droplets hit the exhaust, then creating smoke. If you find out this is the problem, it is very lucky the car didn’t run out of its oil as it slowly drains out of the turbo. I’m no expert so I very well could be wrong, but I also have a twin turbo myself and I’ve heard of the symptoms of a blown turbo, and this sounds very much like it. I hope you’re able to easily fix your beautiful S13.
