I graduated in 2000 and we were not allowed to have phone out in class. To me it’s just out of respect. Phone can be given to teachers in the beginning of class. They are children and forget that they have rules. I believe all school should not allow phone during class.

Not that simple. Some of these kids will fight you and even their parents over these cell phones! It’s gotten to the point of addiction! Some even have separation anxiety! It’s out of control! The dopamine effect they get from these cell phones is real! That’s why we say it starts at home with cell phone etiquette. We as teachers can only do so much in a 50 minute class period trying to educate young people. Majority of the time is teaching cell phone etiquette so we can pore into so knowledge to help them advance their careers etc.

It may be true they don't want to learn, but parents, staffing, and the school board could all be issues. First thing that comes out of students’ mouths when no cell phone comes up is I can’t contact my mom. I am in the classroom and 90% of the time students are on social media, playing games, texting, or making tik tok videos! They are so unconscious that you can walk right up to them and they won’t even try to hide it. They bring big head sets to school and walk around with them on over hoodies!😮and walk right in the classroom just like that. Say hello? Hard to when reminding them every day, all day to take earbuds out, headphones off, hoodie off, phones away….every day, every class! 7 class periods per day 10 months straight! And they feel they are being treated harshly! Fu eeeee! Train a child in a way he should go…!

We never had phones in school...neither did my older siblings.. in case of emergencies or other messages needed to get to a student, a parent or person calls the office and the office either calls them in to have the phone call or hands them them a message. In case of an emergency, i can understand wanting to call home etc.
An ideal situation would be kids are actually disciplined enough to where you can have your phone on you but you dont use it during school hours. But, kids these days do what they want when they want..personal responsibilities? Thats for the minority of kids these days.

We also didn't have many, if any distractions while in class.
Some of your points could be counted as a "what if". I would bet that the majority of cellphone use during school probably has very little to do with school work. I am pretty confident that if there was an emergency, that the teacher or other faculty member would contact the appropriate authorities. These are definitely different times, but I am a former MHS alumni of '76 and we managed without cell phones. They aren't a deterrent to any type of violence, so certainly, that's no excuse for having them. Consider how many school shootings there have been that weren't deterred by a student with a cell phone. Some of the excuses I heard here for having them are ridiculous. This era of the worldwide web, social media, cell phones can be considered a blessing and a curse at the same time if that's possible to be such a thing. Some people have no filter and everyone can get 15 minutes of what they consider fame in their shallow minds. Let's see it for what it is. That's my 2 cents, and I'm entitled to it. 😊

People don’t have respect or value for kids/adolescents and think they can handle them however they feel. That is what is happening at Madison. If an emergency happens at school (i.e., shooter, lockdown, fire, etc.), the kids need a way to contact their parents. Even if there's a problem with kids using their phones when/where they shouldn't (which I agree is a problem), I'd rather trust my future child to have a phone and still make the right choices than to give the school any leverage of power to take my child's phone away.
