Always enjoy your takes on her work, it’s like her first line of Million Miles, “when I was a child” , I think she was 11-12 writing that? and you can tell she means it-feels it, she’s in her own zone, she and her art really had a profound impact on me, as much or more than any of my vocal greats and idols. Strange huh? No matter the age She has been an artist creating and imagining from the start, I’m here for it, ✌️
Here is some info on this video - plus a rough translation of what Angelina is saying to the band. The spoken language is Norwegian. This video is important as it provides insight into how Angelina works. This rehearsal was around the same time as I Put a Spell On You (Angelina is about 9 years old) You will see that she is aware of what each musician is doing and communicates to them what she wants to do. The first thing she says is that she wants to start, followed by her saying she wants to start over, She tells the pianist that the key is too low and that she wants to raise it a half-tone, then at the end of the song she changes the ending on the fly.
robert What you overlooked was that all her communication was in the form of a question----no demands, no "I want"----rather, "Could we start over?" "Shouldn't that be a tone higher?" Not only a musical genius, but a diplomatic one as well!
I believe Angelina apologized for missing the ending and then corrects herself my singing it again while the band follows along as true jazz musicians.

Zack, you were spot on when you said Angelina the boss and that hears everything. That is evident when you watch the expression on her face as the musicians are playing. She is audibly and visually scanning the room. She apparently already knows what she wants the arrangement to sound like.

This is one of my favorite video because it shows how much she knows about music at a young age and is the boss and knows exactly what she wants. This paved the way to what she is today ❤❤❤❤👣
The song is “Portrait of a Man” by Screaming J Hawkins, the same artist who did “I Put a Spell on You”, and Angelina rewrote it to be “Portrait of a Child” to suit herself, since as you so aptly put it, she is a child!

The song is Portrait of a Man which she changed to Child. This band calls her “The Boss”, and she’s not 10 or 11 here, she’s NINE! Can you understand Norwegian? I think there’s a video with captions for this. Apparently they never did polish this for production because this is the only video of this song that’s been released thus far. Yes, Grandma Mery is usually the one behind the camera, although Sara did that recent Ten Years video that’s out now. I think Sara has more talents that have not been unearthed that she probably also inherited from her mother than we know of as yet. I knew you would like this one! Oh, this room isn’t set up to record, it’s just a practice session. However, like you said, Angelina doesn’t miss a thing, good acoustics or not!
You are exactly right, in any rehearsal setting ,with a small jazz ban to a full orchestra she is the boss and the director . She has even stopped a full orchestra rehearsal to correct the score sheet they were using. Angelina s one of a kind in this business, the full pro even from a little girl not yet in her teens.
This video is a rehearsal and the original song was: "Portait of a man,..." from Sceaming Jay Hawkins but Angelina chang the title for : " Portrait of a child,..." and she's 9 or 10 years old here. and yes she's the one in charge it's pure Angelina style moment. And something remarkable is that Angelina has almost always been surrounded by very good musicians, and she is also always up tothe task. Also this band is the same ones who accompanied Angelina for : " I Put a Spell on You,..."

This is Angelina during a jam session of Portrait of a Man and arranging the song as it goes! She is the boss but everything she said was more in the tone of a question as she is being respectful to the band! That is why they respect her so much! This is the only document of her performing this song. There may have been other non recorded sessions. Intersecting that this song was never followed through. No final studio recording or live performance that we know of. Maybe just one of many songs she just tried out but decided not to continue with.
Angelina is around 9 here judging by her height. She is tall for her age. She is over 6ft tall now.

I like these rehearsal and recording video's with Angelina so much: that's where the musical magic happens. And there are many of these video's on RUclips. I think Angelina is 9 in this one because these are the same musicians as in "I put a spell on you". I am stunned that she discovers by herself that some notes ar just too low and that she will re-arrange it right on the spot. And the musicians are like "o.k if that is what you like we'll do that". And most of the time she is absolutely right on spot with those changes: the song sounds different but will always be changed with lots of respect for the orginal song. Another reactor is calling it "Angelina-ing". I like that non-existing "verb". When she just started at the age of 6-7, I guess it would have been very odd for them to discover that they had to make music with such a little girl, but it would not have taken a long time till "odd" disappeared and became "this is high level music making".
Hi Zack, there is a rehearsal where she makes the whole orchestra start over several times until she is happy with it, they say she has perfect pitch, she notices everything and every mistake or missing note, yes, she is affectionately called "the boss" by every band or orchestra

I suspect she might have discovered him through Nina Simone. In particular, starting with Simone's "Feeling Good" (which Angelina was already playing around with when she was 8), that could have led her to the album that song first appeared on, _I Put a Spell on You_ - which, of course, contained Simone's version of the title song - which would have led Angelina to the original by Screamin' Jay Hawkins, and then ultimately to this song.
That's funny Zack when you said she is the boss, since this group of musicians referred to her as "The Boss." I'm not kidding!!!

Many decades ago the US Navy gave me a crash course in Norwegian as I deployed to north of Bergen in the Kingdom of Norway. I forgot basically everything I was taught but I think, not sure, Angelina here is doing directions to the adult musicians with regard to what key to play as well as tempo. It is strange to see a child conduct a studio jam session with professional musicians who are on the card. This costs Krona to be in the practice studio with pros earning at minimum I assume a union wage ( especially in the Scandinavian countries with strong labor standards). Norway is a beautiful nation and Angelina is a beautiful soul. Have a nice Navy as well that way back in my time was on the front lines of Soviet naval maneuvers which were of great concern 😕 in my capacity.
Thanks for this one Zack...It is a Screamin Jay Hawkins song called "Portrait of a Man" , released in 1972. Angelina being a 9 or so child here changed the title of course. Even at this age she is in full control of this rehearsal with these adult Jazz musicians...she is a very sweet boss though. 🥰🥰 We owe Grandma Mery for documenting 100's and 100's of these moments in the life of this young lady. She has a channel with many 100's of intimate and personal moments captured in the life of her prodigal granddaughter. It is called FanClub Mosarz. Her channel is the source for most of these "young Angelina" videos...she recorded everything, literally everything. Cheers brother, and thanks for continuing to support our Goddess of music. BTW, same saxophone player from "I Put A Spell On You" as are these other musicians as well.

Zack, For context: Born Jalacy J. Hawkins in Cleveland, Ohio, on July 18, 1929, the singer was one of several children (the number varies, even according to Hawkins’s own account). He was placed in an orphanage as an infant and adopted at the age of 18 months. By the time Hawkins was four he showed an interest in the piano and soon learned to read and write music. He admired singers Paul Robeson and Enrico Caruso and studied opera at the Ohio Conservatory of Music. As a boy, he played piano in Cleveland night spots for tips. And in his teens, Hawkins made successful boxing appearances in local Golden Gloves competition. She is always respectful of the musicians around her. Line video shows politely discussing with a conductor about a certain part. In another video the pianist wasn’t quite getting it so she showed him on the piano what she wanted
One thing you might not have been told already is that they're doing this in a place called Øvingshotellet in Oslo. (The logo can sometimes be seen high up on the back wall.) The name translates to The Practice Hotel. It's a place where musicians (and I assume other kinds of performers) can rent rehearsal spaces of various sizes. (Several other videos exist of Angelina rehearsing in different rooms in this same venue, from age 8 to at least 11.)
Regarding the sound issue you brought up: I don't think this was preparing for a live performance. In fact, based on (1) the informality of the "jamming", (2) Sara's "do I like this?" demeanor when the camera pans around to her, (3) the lack (so far) of any information about or video of other performances of this song, and (4) the fact that most if not all of these musicians were seen in the "I Put a Spell on You" music video, I suspect the purpose of this session was simply to try out different songs to see which one(s) they wanted to work on further, perhaps ultimately resulting in a proper studio recording. Of course, IPASOY was picked for that treatment. This one wasn't. In any case, since this (presumably) wasn't specifically preparing for any live performance or imminent studio session, there wasn't any need to make it sound good.

Zack, this is the same age (nine) in 2015, and I’m pretty sure the same musicians she collaborated with when she did “I Put a Spell on You.” It’s funny how you called her “The Boss,” because that’s exactly the nickname they endearingly gave her! She’s been friends with these guys ever since then! Come to think of it, they may have been the same ones playing brass for her on her phenomenal Norwegian TV performance of “Feeling Good” the following year!

It's an incomplete modification of Jay's song. Gray beards or hair are not tyically associated with childhood. But if she hade pursued this rewrite further, I'm certain she would have changed that line.
