Of course, the doyen MLV is classy in her interpretation of the Raaga/Shanmughapriya but lacks the usual punch in krithi rendition despite vocal support! Her disciple, Sudha Raghunathan's presentation of the same Papanasam Sivan composition is much more crisp & well punctuated in my opinion! However, the best singing of this Raaga & Krithi has been (also from the same lineage/bani) rendered by Trichur V. Ramachandran, that is so well-structured in all aspects & the sruthi orientation truly emanates from his vocal chords obviating the need of a drone!
Mutually exclusive...the composition n the ragam-Shanmugapriya! I have listened this Papanasam kriti sung by a MLV's star disciple is remembered...Its none other than the Vocalist Sudha Raghunathan ! I should say that Sudha sang like her Guru MLV, in all respects!!!! Invariably MLV excelled in her wonderful gamakas on maneuvering variations to ornament her rendition. I am reminded of '" VALLI NAYAKA NIVE", the kriti of H.N. Muttayyah Bhaagavatar sung by Tanjore S Kalyanaraman . Loved the vinyaasam @ sarva bowmanE shankaranEe..../ First line of Anupallavi .... Sweet exposition of the ragam! She rightly pursued towards a class swarakalpana in extempore ...beautiful indeed....Pranams to the great soul of MLV. Superb recital...
