I had one for a number of years and never could get it to hold a close pattern. That gun sprayed all over the place buuut still one of the coolest guns out there
My grandpa has a wooden mini 14 like that that gun is about 15 years older than me "I'm over 20 under 25 yrs" and that rifle still functions perfectly.
I have matching Mini 14 and Mini Thirty 'tactical' rifles, and I love them. Their reliability is off the charts with good ammo (no, they don't like garbage steel cased stuff, which is fine by me because I don't shoot it), and with a few simple modifications shoot as well as anything else that do what they do. They're also not suspicious-looking to the wrong people like an AR, AK, etc. can be. Love them.
Because the AR15 style rifles in the early 70s had a stigma associated with the Vietnam war, and supposedly were less reliable (early models I suppose). The Mini-14 was thus more popular all the the way through the 80s until they weren't anymore.

The mini-14 with the ".223" marking can still shoot 5.56. Read the manual from the Ruger website, all the manuals from 1974 until now reference 5.56. Have a wonderful day.
It's not really that close to either. M1 Garand is long-stroke gas operated. So is the M14. Mini-14 is short stroke. The mag also rocks in (as you can see in this video). M14's mag goes straight in. M1 Garand, M1 carbine, M14, and Mini-14 are all similar and definitely form a family but none of them are just a slight modification from any other.
