Tanfield Steam Railway - WORLD'S OLDEST RAILWAY! Gateshead & County Durham

Hello welcome back to North East Nostalgic!
Today we’re at Tanfield Railway- the world’s oldest railway!
The coal trade in Georgian Newcastle was being throttled by flooding of pits and poor transport.
Track roads were used for the transport of goods but were often impassable in winter, whilst canals provided good service for goods near water and land.
Waggonways of the North East of England led to huge leaps in civil and mechanical engineering, being expensive to build and maintain but were very cost effective in the coal trade. The Tanfield Waggonway built in 1725 was one of the first to take advantage of being able to make bulk transport relatively cheap and reliable in all weathers!

​@@Paggerd It is 😔 the train guard was telling me that the afternoon tea for 2023 is sold out because of it being featured on a Robson Green TV show. Hopefully they'll release more dates due to demand!
