      ROGER WATERS.

  • @qthelost
    @qthelost 4 года назад +293

    Bass player Roger Waters (who's singing this) is definitely one of the greatest lyricists and songwriters in rock music. He wrote all the lyrics on all their huge 70's albums, Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, and The Wall. And, as always, David Gilmour's guitar work is breathtaking.

    • @giloro85
      @giloro85 4 года назад +17

      It turns out that Gilmour played a lot of the bass tracks in Floyd records and it's one of the points of contention between Waters and him.

    • @qthelost
      @qthelost 4 года назад +64

      @@giloro85 There's no doubt Gilmour by far is the superior musician, he can play just about every instrument and Roger by far is the superior songwriter and visionary. David did play more bass in the studio on the later albums but Roger also played rhythm guitar on some of the songs on Animals and The Wall. I don't think the bass playing was an issue between Roger and David. Roger had gotten pretty controlling by the late 70s so if David was playing bass on a song I'm sure it was agreed that David could do a better and quicker job in the studio. They are both absolute geniuses in what they do and I love them both. David said most of their disagreements came while they were co-producing The Wall and they would argue over the tiniest things about how a song should be recorded or mixed. But it doesn't matter that Roger wrote most of the songs and David played bass on a number of the tracks, Floyd would not be Floyd without the both of them. And I love Rick, Nick and Syd too. Sorry I wrote so long.

    • @giloro85
      @giloro85 4 года назад +13

      @@qthelost I agree and I would humbly add that FLoyd wouldnt be Floyd without Syd or the almost unspoken influence of Bob Klose and even the art of Sturm Thurgerson. Write all you want, it doesn't bother me!

    • @qthelost
      @qthelost 4 года назад +17

      @@giloro85 And the occasional appearance by Dick Parry on the sax! I sometimes felt sorry for Nick and Rick who were often overshadowed by a couple of giants. Once Roger left the band and David was in control, Pink Floyd would only do an album or tour whenever David felt like it. Nick said there were many years of sitting and doing nothing. Thank God they did that one last reunion performance in 2005 thanks to Bob Geldolf, ironically the guy who played "Pink" in the movie The Wall. He got Roger, Rick and Nick to agree to do it but David wouldn't. Then Roger got David's phone # from Bob and called him and talked him into it. Always great to talk to another Floyd fan. Take care.

For the entirety of human history and the thousands of years that human "civilisation" has been going, that's been impossible, until only a few decades ago. On top of that we're also altering the composition of the gases in the atmosphere at a phenomenal rate because it's good for business. Industrial pollution has been a big problem and a human killer since the industrial revolution, but now it's altering the entire planet's ecosystem - so is dumping of vast quantities of plastics, chemical and industrial waste and so on.
      No longer is it possible to just dismiss the archaic, ignorant and insane systems we have governing and running societies throughout the world as, "Well, it's always been corrupt so why bother?" I know you didn't say that, but some folk take these things that way. They might read a comment like yours ad think, oh yea right, it's always been like that. Sod it then, we obviously can't change. Unfortunately, as I am sure most of us here realise, we have to change. The time has been reached in the evolution of human society that necessarily demands that we change, otherwise we'll torture ourselves to death by our own corruption, stupidity and apathy.

    I am looking at the black community's reaction videos to Pink Floyd all over the place because I hope with all my heart that all of you will spark a revolution in music by understanding not only what Pink Floyd is delivering to all of us but, their deep understanding of what we all have been enduring for decades.
    The black community on RUclips gets it, but in my opinion you get it even deeper. The world never changes with one voice. We all have to learn how to sing together.

      'The Wall' is nothing compared to 'Animals', and I speak as a PF fan. Too much filler and too long. Of all the PF concerts I saw from 1973 onwards to 1988, Animals (Empire Pool, Wembley (1977) remains the standout: the whole of 'Animals' and; 'Wish You Were Here', plus two Dark SIde of the Moon tracks (Money/Us and Them) for the encore. Although I saw them perform 'The Wall' twice (Earls Court), looking back I now feel it was bloated and over-theatrical. Clearly, you love the album and that's great.

    • @grelch
      @grelch 4 года назад

      @@pentar3241 100% agree. There are iconic songs on the album. The concept and story are fantastic, but there 's a long stretch of sludgy, whiny songs on it. It's probably one of the finest 'concept' albums, but there is a lot of tedious music on it. Animals is powerful from start to finish. Angry, cynical and you have to be in the right frame of mind to listen to it, but it's a perfect album.

      @@grelch Thanks for your reply gretch. It's all subjective, of course. Genesis' double-sided concept album 'Lamb Lies Down on Broadway' is superior, and one I can listen to from start to finish when the mood strikes. It's worth it alone for the drumming by Phil Collins: masterful and hypnotic. I could listen to it as a standalone musical piece without the singing of Gabriel, such is its strength in terms of composition and muscianship: a tour de force! Happy listening!

      Jason Lee,
      Dio, yes! H&H is one of my favorites of all time.
      If you want to expand your seventies rock experience, listen to Gamma. Their song “Voyager” is epic. Robin Trower is another “underplayed, nowadays” artist. “Bridge of Sighs,” live is amazing. I’ll try to find the link.
      Edit:

    Dude; you can make any bad day I've had go away. Thank you for doing this (and all of the other ones too!)
