  • A visual clone of the legendary Technics SL1200 series, at ⅓ of the cost. This Audio-Technica is a heavyweight DJ-grade direct drive turntable with 78 RPM speed, quartz lock pitch control, fully adjustable S-shaped tonearm, and built-in pre-amp and USB output. As of September 2011, the AT-LP120 turntable now comes with an upgraded AT95E phono cartridge with elliptical stylus, rather than the ATP2 "DJ" cartridge shown in this video.
    The previous AT-PL120 model is the same thing except without the built-in USB output (which I don't plan on using anyway).

    When it reaches the end of a record, it goes around continuously in the center groove. This does not cause any damage, and in fact, lets you hear the audio that some of the Beatles albums have recorded in the center groove.

    I looked at a number of your videos on turntables and love your thorough, honest, and detailed reviews with results that you actually test and show in real-time! You clarify a lot of things and help others make the most informed decisions based on real (and not hyped-up) data, so kudos to you for all that you do!
    I have the AT-LP120XUSB that I purchased a year ago. The built-in phono preamp on the LP120 "X" models has a switch that is supposed to be fully bypassed when changing from "Line" to "Phono" (unlike the earlier LP120 models), so that's a step up in terms of noise interference. Some compromise was made in terms of build, however, because the LP120X USB weighs 6lbs less than the model you reviewed above (23.5lbs for the AT-LP120 USB vs 17.6lbs for the AT-LP120X USB).
    As you said, it's probably one of the closest clones there is to the Technics SL-1200, except for the huge differences in (1) weight (almost 28lbs for the Technics SL-1200) and (2) effective tonearm mass (12g for the SL-1200 vs 20.61g for the AT-LP120X USB with a 9g headshell).
    Speaking of effective tonearm mass, - an FYI for anyone looking to purchase one of these turntables: make sure to select a compatible cartridge suited for them in terms of compliance. Unfortunately, formulas used to convert Japanese dynamic compliances at 100Hz to Western dynamic compliances at 10Hz - by multiplying the 100Hz dynamic compliance number by 1.5 to 2 - produce inconsistent and unreliable results.
    To give just one example, I have an ART9XA that was given to me by a friend. I didn't think it would be of much use to me or suitable on the LP120X USB since the cartridge cost more than double the price of the turntable itself (even though it sounds fantastic). I also thought it would be too high in compliance. Audio-Technica has its dynamic compliance listed as 10 x 10-6 cm/dyne (100 Hz). Going halfway between 1.5 and 2.0, I used 1.7 as a middle ground. That would give it a dynamic compliance of 17cu. Taking into consideration the 8.5g ART9XA cartridge mounted on a 6g headshell (plus 0.5g assembly), - such would "supposedly" result in a resonant frequency of 7Hz, just within the acceptable range of 7 to 12HZ.
    However, after recording a few LPs and running the Analyze/Plot Spectrum in Audacity, it actually showed a resonant frequency of 8Hz. I then went online to use the Resonance Frequency calculator and added the total mass of effective tonearm mass + cartridge weight + screw assembly = 27.61g. That in combination with a resonant frequency of 8Hz shows the real dynamic compliance of the ART9XA to be 14.335cu, not 17.
    After experimenting with various combinations of cartridge weighs and compliances with this tonearm, I found out that the maximum cartridge compliance for this turntable should be no higher than 14cu at 10Hz if using 8Hz as the starting range (or 18cu at 10Hz, if using 7Hz as the starting range). Just a bit of info for those who might be looking to purchase this turntable in the future.
    By the way, that's a great song you played there (the album is most likely great, too).

    I've got the earlier version with out USB, and I have to confirm it is a GREAT machine. I use it for playing 78s mainly, and it works superbly. The interchangeable heads are useful too for going to vinyl, when you need to.

    • @senorxrey6429
      @senorxrey6429 4 года назад +6

      this is exactly why vinyl sounds way different from a CD or the original tape: the 100 year old technology has all sorts of distortion built in...starting with the RIAA-curve preamps to the mis-tracking tone arms trying to replicate the tracking of the original lateral cutting lathe. Many other fail points to create groove tracking
      distortion to mention here.

    Hey thanks so much for your review it was great! I am going to get one for myself and I cant wait to hear real music quality again. I was a DJ in San Francisco during the 70's and helped review the SLMKII 12000 tables for Technics development team. The reason why your turn table is heavy is because it is weighted with cement which is what was used at a night club I worked at to defeat base feed back in a very loud environment. The Tec team came by and discovered how we did this and applied the deadening with concrete effect that we were using with Russco Studio Turntables by pouring the cement into the bottom of the frame of the turntable. Also this isolation concept is designed for best use on top of a free standing table not touching walls or furniture. Thanks again for your review Sir I liked your selection of music.

I'm the kind of guy who wants to listen to vinyl without feeling like I need a degree from MIT to figure it out. I maintain mine well. When not in use its unplugged, stylus cover on, lid down. I bought another cart and shell for the LPs and put the 78 RPM stylus on the cheap and heavy cart that came with this turntable. You also have to adjust the stylus pressure and anti-skate every time you change over as 78's need about 3 grams to track.

      a totally useless feature for most is the platter "reverse" button. You will ruin you stylus by playing a record backwards as well as ruining the groove wall. Unless you buy into the old "Paul Is Dead" bull$#!+ from The Beatles era, you don't need to play a record backwards, unless you are an imbecile. I briefly had the Stanton T92 which is a nice turntable but I just ordered this one except with the black color version ( versus silver). I like how this one has the tone arm lift mechanism where the Stanton. My old Marantz had the tone arm lifter and I think that it preserves your needle longer along with your vinyl also. Also with the pop-up needle light which is a plus too (especially for us that grew up on vinyl and our hands aren't quite as steady as they used to be and our vision has gone south abit also. So both the tone arm lift and the light are features that Stanton T92 didn't have. The light will also be cool to watch the new re-release 40th anniversary of Rush 2112 with the Hologram on it, which you need a light source to view. Here is a link..

      ...That said , it is an excellent turntable.
      The fit and finish is very very good. The "pop-up" track illumination light is not buttery smooth when pushed back down to the retracted position, like the one on my Tech-12. It has never given me any problem and if anything, it has gotten smoother.
      At the current price ..$250.00 open box and $300.00 +/- the AT-LP120 is a great deal on a very nice turntable..knock off or not !
      My Rega Planar 4 is a very nice turntable and is more refined, I just wish it blew the AT-LP120 out of the water..the only time it really starts to pull away is when it get a better cartridge, like it's Ortofon 2M Black. With the 2M Red on the Rega P4, I think the difference.. if any is in my head.
      I am certain that there is nothing there that would be cause to replace the Rega Planar 4 if it was to stop working beyond repair, down the road.
      My son's Pro-ject Debut carbon EVO sounds just as good as the Rega Planar 4, and the LP-120 is right on its heals if not it's equal.

    A question about the arm that comes with this table: Do you think there is an excessive amount of "play" or movement in the arm bearings? I have seen two examples of this turntable, one had very little play in the bearings and the other really rattled when you grabbed the arm and gently moved it from front to back. I also saw one of the LP-1240s versions and it had the same characteristics.

    Hello Vwestlife,
    You should replace the needle and cartridge so not to destroy the groves in your vinyl records. The hight, weight, and anti-skating of your tonearm needs to be accurately setup. If you need some help, I will walk you through. I have the Technics 1210 MK2 turntables and have been using Technics since the 1970's. If used correctly, they last for many decades. Audio Technica needles and cartridges are the only brand I use. I like them because they can be tracked much lighter than most of the other brands. I've enjoyed your demonstration and may pick up a few Audio Technica turntables. I need to read up more on the components they use. It would be nice to put some of my vinyl on You Tube so people can enjoy them. Which store location in New Jersey did you purchase your AT-LP120 ?
    Sal Z.

    • @vwestlife
      @vwestlife  10 лет назад +1

      I mostly use this turntable to play 78s, and compared to the 30+ grams that they were designed to be tracked at, 3 to 5 grams is very light! The store I bought it from is now a Guitar Center. They do sell turntables, but I don't know if they have this model.

    • @salz0723
      @salz0723 10 лет назад

      vwestlife I have shopped in the Cherry Hill, Totowa, Paramus, and Toms River locations, however, never saw turntables for sale in Guitar Center. I track my tonearm at 1-1/2 grams. As for the above Arthur Murry album, you will eventually notice the high end begin to disappear from the weight of using 3-5 grams of weight. Also the height, anti skating, and positioning need to be accurately set as well. Please let me know if you should discover any flaws in this unit. Unfortunately, I do not know anyone who owns an Audio Technica turntable so I could compare and decide. Do the Guitar Centers have them on display ?
      Sal Z. .

    • @vwestlife
      @vwestlife  10 лет назад +6

      D J Sal Z. I bought a Stanton turntable from the Springfield, NJ Guitar Center, but that was years ago. The original design spec for LPs was 12 grams tracking for mono records and 6 grams for stereo records! I have lots of worn-out 45s that sound terrible when played on a P-Mount turntable with 1.25 grams tracking, but sound fine when played on my Pioneer PL-990 which tracks at 3 grams. A lighter tracking cartridge picks up more high-end detail, but on a record that's already worn, that high-end detail is nothing but noise!

    • @salz0723
      @salz0723 10 лет назад +1

      vwestlife I will either stop at the Springfield store or have someone shop for me. I know B&H Photos in New York are selling the Technics 1210MK2's for $1,800.00 each because Technics has discontinued them. I never thought I would see the day when this would happen. So that is my reason for interest in the Audio-Technica AT-LP120. It's wise to have a backup plan. Thank you for the advice and good luck with your new purchase.
      Sal Z.

      @richardcline1337 6 лет назад

      One thing I have realized as I get farther and farther into collecting old vinyl is the difference a conical and an elliptical stylus will make. The conical "sounds" better on more worn vinyl because it tends to sit higher in the groove so it doesn't pick up as much "wear noise" as an elliptical would. But if you are fortunate enough to find some really near mint albums, the the elliptical is the only way to go because it tracks lower in the groove and can reproduce the full range of sound that is recorded. It also allows you to use a much lighter tracking force thereby saving wear on the vinyl and the stylus itself.

    It should be noted that you should NEVER lower the tonearm onto the record groove by hand (Example: 7:24). Hands are not completely steady and you can actually gouge the grooves by doing that. It is recommended to lower and raise the tonearm using the cueing lever ONLY! Hopefully you haven't gouged any grooves by doing that. If you choose to use your hand for cueing your records, you do so at your own risk.

    • @vwestlife
      @vwestlife  9 лет назад +68

      ***** Every time you play a record, you cause *permanent damage* to the grooves. So if you're obsessed with keeping your records in 100% pristine condition, then either keep them on the shelf and never play them, or spend $20,000 on a laser turntable! But for the rest of us, part of the whole fun on playing records is placing the tonearm down on the groove by hand. Especially if you can get it in exactly the right spot the first time, you get the satisfaction of the skill you've spent a lifetime practicing.

    • @pip5528
      @pip5528 9 лет назад

      vwestlife That makes sense. However, the counterweight prevents the stylus from putting too much pressure on the groove of the record.

      bitspacemusic I have seen MANY people cue a record by placing the tonearm on it by hand. They even do it in movies and TV shows sadly. I got to use a turntable at my dad's house on Monday. It was quite fun. I swapped out records, I cued it using the cueing lever like you're supposed to, etc. Keep in mind it was my first time using a turntable in my entire life as I was born in 1998 and grew up with cassettes and compact discs, but not vinyl. Of course, I have been studying vinyl records and turntables to death for the past several weeks, especially because there is an Awesomenauts record.
