Personally, I wish BMWi was as out there as the i3 and i8, and this iX3 was called something like the X3 electric, with an iX3 being styled and made more like the i3 or i8 than the X3

Strangely, BMW is moving to a more ridiculously larger grill right at the time that they could be eliminating them. BMW peaked style wise a very very long time ago and now they just dont know what to do with their own design language.

DAMN YOU JOHNNY!!!!! I spit water on my iPad at the Hans Zimmer part….. And I am not mad at you, I regrettably took a sip at the wrong time. Great review tho!
Great review, but Johnny you mentioned the iX3 motor is permanently excited which I believe is incorrect (@7:10). It's actually an unusual "current-excited" synchronous motor type. Basically means no rare-earths and it can be totally shut down for coasting efficiency. Just thought that's some slightly novel tech to point out, especially as you found the overall efficiency quite good.
I like it! What's not to like? Looks decent, good kit inside, drives well it seems, no road tax and charging it up is half the cost of petrol. Its got its faults, but I wouldn't say no! 60k is pricey but who pays 60k up front, BMW offer great finance options and discounts which makes this more than affordable.

The Zimmer thing really made laugh! Love your content - geeky and strangely relaxing to watch...ASMR on wheels. Don't get the piston thing though. Why not say ICE?
I don't like ICE because it can be confused with real ice. Piston leaves no confusion at all, and so I prefer it. Personal preference. Glad you enjoyed Hans Zimmer, he got dem sounds fo ma Bimmer.
@@TheLateBrakeShow In New Zealand I'm (moderately) amused to hear people now say "banger" for piston-engined vehicle: "Yep test-drove the new Lexus banger but went for a Model 3 in the end..." (Not something I'd personally have the opportunity to say, alas, since neither of these cars in my price range.)
Don’t understand why BMW have gone backwards in design terms when their i3 has been such a successful seller… and X badge with no 4wd… why? If it looks like an X3, but doesn’t have 4wd and is more expensive then wouldn’t you just buy an ICE X3. This is just going to push people into the ICE version… maybe that’s their goal! 🤫
Theres an i3 in my street, i think it looks great, the narrow but big wheels, love it. It just has too little room in the boot for me to ever consider it.
Thanks Jonny, nice honest review. Always makes my day when there's a TLBS episode to watch, here's hoping for another episode before the Leicestershire TLBS on Tour. On a different note, is it me or is the zimmer bimmer wearing a pair of wayfarers...🕶...I certainly can't unsee that now...😎😄
Love Your review as always, BUT ONE THING. How can you not understand that the temperature showed in the driver’s display is for showing the temperature of the batteries. I was a bit surprised that you of all people didn’t now this? Otherwise a great review as always, and you get better and better every episode. Ps love your square you put in the videos with alla the data and features, well done 👏
Great review of a car I’ve ordered myself as a company car, purely because the only other electric cars on the list were the EQC Sport and EQA, both of which weren’t as well specced as the IX3. Completely agree that BMW have really screwed up the styling on this car, which is probably why they’ve facelifted it already and released the M Sport version. The Premier Edition looks bland, and the extra styling cues on the bodywork detract from the car. With the black wheels (which I also think look crap), they’ve highlighted that it’s an electric car, whilst making it far less desirable than the petrol or diesel models.
I dont understand why didnt they just wait half a year more to release this directly as a facelift... it doesnt make sense considering they had to change some aspects design wise for a car that already had i-specific design bits like the bumpers the facelift ix3 shares with the regular M sport facelift. I guess they are learning from this schedueling issues and doing it right with the 3 series that will get an i3 version when the facelift is unveiled
Love how the gesture control keeps changing the radio station "audible beep" as you wave your hands about.. I only know as my wife is constantly waving her hands when we drive and therefore constantly changing the radio stations..
Is it only me but £60k for an EV is still way out of most people’s league. Until the prices drop significantly I will stick with my diesel. Also why are EV alloys all minging.
Glad I’m not the only one thinking this, I definitely don’t see owning an EV as a money saving endeavour. Going to keep running my petrol cars for a few more years at least and see where the EV market is then but I’m not excited by it right now at all
@@originalkk882 if car manufacturers think they can use the public as cash cows whilst they test which EV format works (bit like Betamax and VHS) they they are misguided. £60k for any car is too much but for a 2 wheel drive BMW is just ridiculous. I will continue to buy a Petrol or diesel car until the car companies and EV charging locations is sorted. For example the town I live has 3 charging points in the whole town.
Nice bit of motoring journalism Jonny, Well executed, loved the gritty urban location. I know people who have had murders with BMW repair bills and Chinese craftsmanship may not improve this issue ?? Great channel 👍 always give Jonny the adds in respect to his work.
Not a massive modern bmw fan, feel like they have lost there way much prefer the ioniq 5 hyundai. Good video though always feel like it's interesting to see the new evs. Cheers. Steve.
Another great informative review, at that price and look not compelling enough to switch from the piston versions; I hear there is a more radical looking version on the drawing board, which maybe worth waiting for if we all haven’t already bought an Ioniq 5.
I have got a new 2023 model Y Standard RWD edition on order but considering the BMW instead. Any thoughts which one I should go for? I can buy the BMW at a reduced price which puts it $10,000 more than the base model Y?
Can BMW grills get any uglier if they tried?....just when you think "no" they manage to screw up another model. I use to bleed BMW - worked for them for 14 years. I own a 1994 E31 8 Series and a 1998 e36 Compact M Sport.....But since 2001, I've had ZERO interest in any of their cars. They don't drive like they did, they don't ride like they did , they're not special like they were and pricing has become just this side of ridiculous.
I support that request 😉 The 5 will be available soon in mainland Europe and from what I've seen of it so far I'd rather have that than the iX3... and I have 3 BMWs in my garage. Says a lot about modern BMWs I guess
Truthfully it seems to me that the eNiro (Niro EV), that has been around for two years, is comparable to this BMW in performance for less than 2/3rds the price. And we know the eNiro was a stepping stone to get Kia’s feet wet for the EV6. Am I missing something here?
I wish BMW would just update the i8's design a slight bit and made it fully electric. Actually, I wish they'd use the design language they developed for the i3 and i8 for their entire new electric car range... Or maybe some of that could also help their over piston powered cars. Those cars really had it all in terms of design. The i8 in particular.
Yes, but it would be a major redesign to transform the i8 to fully electric. If it was simple Toyota could have created a BEV Prius years ago, and GM could have made a fully electric Volt
NO ONE does as thorough a job of describing the functional ins and outs of a car as Jonny, it's as close as I can get to driving and experiencing the car being reviewed without actually driving it. I don't really have much interest in this car but I wouldn't have known that without Jonny. I'll keep my Tesla Model 3. :)
How does it compare to Ioniq 5 in your opinion? I think they are very direct competitors, but you don’t mention Ipniq 5 or EV6 even once. Do you think they are a dofferent class?
It isn't just you. This powertrain is already exceptional and would fit an estate even better. Boring package with the best adaptive recuperation to date. Reacts to traffic signs, anticipates the next one, is influenced by obstacles and route and even tries to avoid overtaking on the left. Drives like the unbumpy version of the i3s. Hard to believe that this is 900kg heavier and has me wondering if the rear axle would fit in mine. If anyone has the chance to drive this do it. And then go push bmw to put this powertrain in a real car.
The grill !! I can't un-see silly sunglasses. It's obvious that BMW, and all car makers, are worried that people won't be able to process a car that doesn't have a conventional body design...worried about lost sales due to unfamiliar car shapes!. Design 'must be familiar' to ensure a purchase! Anyways...all your reviews are super spot on, thank you for doing...
All EVs do (or should), when the re-gen is high enough. I think it's a legal requirement for brake lights to show above a specified level of deceleration (on any car).
Those CATL cells, are they LiFePO4 or are they some more conventional type of Lithium chemistry? CATL makes all sorts of stuff, but large prismatics are typically iron phosphate.
Johnny, great review and i really enjoy watching your videos. You didnt mention the EV6 or Ioniq 5 as rivals for this I'm just wondering why is that because they are from less "premium" brands or are their some other details that I'm missing. (Not something I'd personally have the opportunity to say, alas, since neither of these cars in my price range.)
@@angela1984a because that's what sells now
@@amnottabs Time to do something about that?
Heat pump ? Lane keeping / overtaking/ distance control, overtaking lights in the wing mirrors ?
1:14 the X3/iX3 has the best side porportions of any crossover/SUV on the market, it's just perfect.
And why are you complainig about the grills? They aren't even big and are porportional to the car. Audi and Mercedes have bigger grills.
Great review Johnny, I feel for you having to test drive it around Birmingham, roadworks everywhere, nightmare!
Zim Zimmer, who did the sounds for my Bimmer - that must be an alternative thumbnail
Unique Jonny is always great 'content'...!!
Cheers Richard!
Excellent review, as usual, but I miss BMW ingenuity.
Yeah, gesture control is an entirely shit idea.
LMAO who did the sounds to my beemer? Well don Jonny, well done
Is it only me but £60k for an EV is still way out of most people’s league. Until the prices drop significantly I will stick with my diesel. Also why are EV alloys all minging.
Glad I’m not the only one thinking this, I definitely don’t see owning an EV as a money saving endeavour. Going to keep running my petrol cars for a few more years at least and see where the EV market is then but I’m not excited by it right now at all
No, it isn’t just you. EVs will be the rich peoples playground for years.
Why else do you think they are really planning on banning petrol and diesel?
@@originalkk882 if car manufacturers think they can use the public as cash cows whilst they test which EV format works (bit like Betamax and VHS) they they are misguided. £60k for any car is too much but for a 2 wheel drive BMW is just ridiculous. I will continue to buy a Petrol or diesel car until the car companies and EV charging locations is sorted. For example the town I live has 3 charging points in the whole town.
The front of the BMW looks like it is wearing Eric Morecambe's glasses!
I thought EXACTLY the same thing as soon as I saw it!
@@giulianomarco Brilliant minds!
Hello, very nice review like always 🥰. Can you get the MG 5 please for a point of view from your side please?
I support that request 😉
The 5 will be available soon in mainland Europe and from what I've seen of it so far I'd rather have that than the iX3... and I have 3 BMWs in my garage.
I can't get away from the grill is it two Ronnie's or Eric Morecambe inspired 🤣🤣🤣
The cultural contrast between the environment this review was shot in and the car itself was very interesting.
We try to go the extra mile (with added regen).
@@TheLateBrakeShow it's certainly paying off in the form of our enjoyment. Thanks for all the effort and execution you put into these details!
Ok, fuck, you had me at Zimmer/Bimmer. I'm awarding points.
Cheers John!
Jonny, if you dislike the pace of electric tailgates I can only imagine what Chops thinks of them..
😐
How does it compare to Ioniq 5 in your opinion? I think they are very direct competitors, but you don’t mention Ipniq 5 or EV6 even once. Do you think they are a dofferent class?
thank you johnny for giving it your best; this car just isn’t that wild!
Great video.
Another good episode. 👍
Interesting you didnt mention, in your video or the text - the Polestar? That to me is the obvious 'premium' alternative at 60k ish?
I used to like BMW's, can't say I'm that interested in them these days
It isn't just you. This powertrain is already exceptional and would fit an estate even better. Boring package with the best adaptive recuperation to date. Reacts to traffic signs, anticipates the next one, is influenced by obstacles and route and even tries to avoid overtaking on the left. Drives like the unbumpy version of the i3s. Hard to believe that this is 900kg heavier and has me wondering if the rear axle would fit in mine. If anyone has the chance to drive this do it. And then go push bmw to put this powertrain in a real car.
Did BMW finally get those signal lights to work now that the car is electric ?
The grill !! I can't un-see silly sunglasses. It's obvious that BMW, and all car makers, are worried that people won't be able to process a car that doesn't have a conventional body design...worried about lost sales due to unfamiliar car shapes!. Design 'must be familiar' to ensure a purchase! Anyways...all your reviews are super spot on, thank you for doing...
Shoot this in Digbeth?
Why didn't you put the Tesla Model Y's boot space up when you did the vs Rivals graphic? The Model Y is class leading isn't it?
“Ooo nice pop bang that” love it!
Isn't that front space reserved for cooling? If you put a loaf of luggage in there it might cause it to go all Galaxy Note and blow up
It’s wearing sunglasses! What’s that all about?? Always enjoy your reviews though Johnny 👍
Always wondered with the regenerative braking, does it show the brake lights to let cars behind know you are slowing down?
All EVs do (or should), when the re-gen is high enough. I think it's a legal requirement for brake lights to show above a specified level of deceleration (on any car).
The Zimmer bit was sick
I'd honestly be embarrassed to be seen driving it. I really do think it looks that bad. Can't get over the daft front grille, still.
discount code for continentals?
Crazy that they actually had space for a ‘froot’ and just covered it over?! Surely an extra bit of plastic couldn’t be too hard to engineer haha 🤦🏻♂️
The i3 was from 2013!!! Where is the time going, felt like last year! 😥😥
I notice you go to digbeth a lot in your videos, love that place
It is where my career on the TV began.
As for me they seem to be better options especially when you consider price.
Do the brake lights come on when it’s in B and slowing to a stop?
Yes, usually
If u know Toyota harrier Japan version, it’s got plastic part in the front grill, It’s break when driving and something hit.
