Thanks very much for doing the 1000km test with the BMW iX3. It's very helpful to show what is involved when you want to do long trips with this EV. Of all available EV's atm this is the car I would consider the most. It ticks all the boxes for me.
One problem I see, it’s only 2WD for a SUV in this price range. Else, it’s a good car
@@minicirco In the end it comes down to personal preference.
Have it since 6 months, very happy with it.
@@merlin2627 Nice! I am currently considering the iX1 as it seems to better suit my requirements.
@@Leos-Worldvery good choice, the interior is actually nearly as big as the current iX3, and it’s more modern.
When you talked about the seats, I think your personal opinion of them after the 1000km challenges in thr spreadsheet would be great to have! In the end its preferrable spending 11 in a comfy car than 10 on a rock. Great job!
That’s really impressive. BMW maybe a little late to the party, but they are coming in with some proper EVs. Can’t wait for you to get your hands on a BMW i4.
Would not say they were late to the party. I think they were among the first, but figured they were overdressed & the party seemed to go nowhere. They then went home, put on their old clothes, and checked out the place that you can rely on to provide a party day-in and out. On their way home they checked into the first party again and surprisingly found it was now going strong and worthy of presence. That's that for Friday evening. Gonna see whats up on Saturday..
Nice time! These EVs are getting good!
1000 km challenge is just priceless, every flaw of the car, immediately exposed. Thank you.
This is commendable - an ICE platform that is on par with Model 3 LR results. I personally prefer BMW on build and material quality and Tesla, of course, on software and charging infrastructure. The results are surprising. Nice that you documented it.
B...B..BUT the 5 years that Tesla is ahead ;-)....
There are things Tesla is good at, no question. But the whole narrative that they are so far ahead and the whole industry is doomed, is thankfully falling apart.
10:30 in 1000 km is very good for a high quality build car with excellent after market follow up!
Awesome. You are the man.
Hi Chris !! :)
Thanks for the review. Just ordered one today 😁
Me too... I'm hoping i get the face-lift version!
Very impressive performance. Really wasn't expected. Proof that BMW masters the EV technology.
Can´t wait for the I4 1000 km challenge :)
BBQ ... Bjorn Bangs-in Quality again
I look forward to when the USA has a charging network to match yours and the current policy changes seem to make this a certainty now
Hi Bjorn, hopefully you try soon the iX3 LCI, and next time with better temperature.
I now want to upgrade to this from i3
Goedemorgen, goodmorning👍
Veel te vroeg, HET IS WEEKEND
We sweep the sides of the road in the springtime here in Canada as well, but they don't close the whole road to do it. We just drive past them while they work.
Always kills me when you're at "Schweinsund"🤣
He just says it wrong, its Schweinehund of course!
Swinehound?
I ordered That car 2 months ago. Because my wife whant‘s a normal car and no Handy on wheels. Thank you for this Videos. 👍
Loved the light dance session 😅👌 Keep the cool and informative content coming 👏
I'd love to see degradation test and a 1000km challenge with a 3 year old iX3. I usually come back to this one and lament the fact that this version doesn't have pre-heating of the battery.
Thank you very much :) I will consider it if I can get my hands on one.
The light thing would drive me bonkers
As it turns out, apparently we with the pre-facelift version will NOT be getting the update that allows us to preheat the battery prior to arriving to a charging station. The facelift version (LCI) does get it, but we don't.
this is pretty bad. it's hard to view them as a committed EV manufacturer when they abandon customers a few months after purchase. doesn't do their reputation any good
Is this still the case?
@@kairogerhjelmeland7220 yeah, if you get the face-lift version you're all set though, as long as you precondition the battery prior to arrival to the charging station. It maxes out at 155kW though and that effect is not long-lasting. If you're someone who has to use fast chargers a lot and does a lot of km annually, I'd just go for Xpeng G9 or at least G6 if I were you, cause G9 AVERAGES over 200Kw, that's insane. The BMW averages around 90-100kW on almost the same sized battery. Best of luck.
@@zaneverovati thanks!
After all you seem to like the iX3 more than you had expected before the tests.
Given the temperatures... really good! Compares well to M3 LR 2021 in kinda similar conditions. - Even more impressive considering the type of car (higher drag coeff.). Maybe conventional platform is actually a viable option for larger type of cars. Could probably be better in an EV platform, but is also far from being bad the way it is.
Yes and the lack of an 4WD option, it‘s a little bummer in that price range
The outside looks a lot similar to other BMW models, but I’m pretty sure they redesigned everything you can’t see so that it’s packaged efficiently
Great video. It's cool to think there's an EV ninja driving on the roads near Oslo in the middle of the night.
Hey Bjorn it not about bmw. But is next week a video from you about the ioniq 5 coming?
this is the wear-down-mode for the light adjusment. It ensures that there is still enough work for the repair shops.
Looking forward to to mine. Expected to drive it by end October.
Hi Bjorn, do you know if BMW has already provided an update to enable the preheated of the battery of the iX3 to solve the cold gate issue?
Thx for an interesting and valuable test Björn. And huge 👍🏻 to nitwits in the comments presuming Made in China means lesser quality. You guys should notify Elon Musk - your expertise could save Tesla from the huge mistake that is Gigafactory Shanghai. Broaden your horizons ffs 🤦♂️
Alles gut.
Loosing heat like swiss cheese!! :D Classic one liners like a Schwarzenegger movie! :)
I wouldnt mind 3 hour of this :D
Cool i was in the video! commenting in the first charge livestream :D :D
Great vid! Love the series!
Will you heve the opportunity to do an Audi Q4 e-tron?
Nok en superbra test fra deg Bjørn! Fin bil. Har prøvekjørt den selv. Si i fra dersom oppdatering av pre-heat før lading kommer til iX3. Keep it up😊💪 Hvordan fungerer route planner i iX3. Beregner den ut hvor mye prosent batteri du har til ladestasjonen slik Tesla gjør?
I have a new IX3 and drove it over the Xmas hols from Paris to Nice and then back again and then Paris to London return. I have previously done all of this in a petrol Volvo XC60 so had a comparison of sorts. The Paris to Nice leg was ok at 12 hours compared to 10.5 in the Volvo. On both trips I had a full load and a large dog. But I also had a roof box this time which I did not on the Volvo. The return leg however was 14 hours. None of the Ionity charging units were close to their advertised maximum. Often they charged at 75 and even lower. Overall the range was really not great, it was also windy and cold, and I had to recharge every 2 hours for 30-40 mins on the return leg. Just not good enough. I have done the Paris to London with just 1 recharge at the Eurotunnel terminal (I was on my own), but this time the range was a lot less. Overall not a winning experience on these long trips when fully loaded.
Awesome test as always. One question though, does BMW charge a subscription fee to use features that are built into this car? I've heard they're doing this now, at least for some US models.
Have you been watching The Wire? Shieeeeeet!
What exactly does the temperature gauge on the right hand side of the driver display show? Normally showing cooling fluid temperature makes only sense in an ICE car. Does the shown value even change during driving or charging?!
Great test and review and comments, Bjorn! Been excited to see what BMW brings to the party and you covered it really well!
Quick question: How would you rate the adaptive cruise control and other self driving capabilities for the iX3?
@Bjørn Nyland I'm not very familiar with WhatsApp. No idea what this means...
@@BjrnRuthberg pretty sure it's spam
I would also love to have more info on Adaptive Cruise and Lane keep assist. For us those functions are very important if/when we are buying our second EV. Other then that, great video.
@@mattiasm1946 I tested the iX3 myself today. I SO wanted to hate it, but no such luck. It lacks a frunk, 4WD and has a transmission tunnel that effectively makes the middle seat in the back rather useless for an adult person. But otherwise it's just a great car. About the ACC: It's good. Even on the shitty roads around here the self drive function is as good as you can expect. If the road markings are ok, the car will basically drive itself as long as your hands are on the wheel. It shows all the signs, and warns you/breaks if you're about to run a red light. When you drive over the speed limit you get a warning as the HUD displays the speed in red, but it doesn't intervene. Changing lanes while drive assist is on works great. Just activate the turn signal, and once you start change lane the system temporarily deactivates, then reactivate once the lane change is complete. It's just like I want it. When driving with the drive assist you get a notification when the speed limit changes, and if you push the "set"-button, it will set the speed to that limit. It got the speed limits wrong a couple of times due to adjacent roads, but because it doesn't change the speed automatically, that's a minor problem. Didn't experience any ghost breaking.
I’d say it’s better than Tesla AutoPilot. I’m in the process of changing from a Tesla Model 3LR 2019 to an iX3 M-Sport Pro. The Tesla AP has been too temperamental. Also I don’t like how you have to reset it after every lane change whereas on the iX3 it resets itself.
LOL the beemer comes with the adaptive light groove....
How do you think... On instrument cluster on right side you have temperature gauge... What does it measure? Battery temp?
Possible to do this test in the LCI version? :)
i think for a fossil burner based car, it is good. it they achive to make a more EV like version that slimms down a bit and has 15kWh extra battery, then it would be a really good BEV, also suitable for long distance trips.
the really good thing is, that they focus on higher speed efficiency and this is really what counts.
when you go on a longer trip, the efficiency at 50km/h is completely not important but the efficiency at 130km/h is!
Well, the i4. I'm curious how that will handle in real life.
SALUT BJORN, bravo pour tes vidéos, j'adore ! Do you know if bmw has resolved the issue about pre-heating batteries ?
I believe you when you say the seats are comfy since your ass must hate you for seating so many hours in so many cars😂 love the reviews👏
Now the market offers single-motor, big battery; single-motor small battery; dual-motor big battery. Are there any dual-motor, small battery offerings?
In what mode did you drive Björn? Eco Pro?
Great vid! 🙌
I would not recommend a car based on a feature that may come. I’ve had BMWs and they do not have the best track record of support developing features after you have bought.
Fair enough, the battery heater issue is probably something they will solve, but I would only buy it once I am 100% the feature is “turned on”. There are plenty of other great EVs.
Bjoern is there a country close by which allows a higher motorway speed - like 120km/h?
you should mention how long you were at these charge stops to get an idea of EV ownership, Thanks
Great test. Could the difference between the charge station and the car charging readings be the power lost as heat in the charging cable?
Andreas Haenel managed the 1.000 km Challenge with the iX3 in 10h 6Min with an avg. temerature of 10C. He charged up to 55-60% and had no coldgating.
How fast did he drive? If he drove faster than 130 km/h then it's not the same as my test.
Are we checking real world or perfect conditions? If you subtract for slow charging speed you could do this 1000km inn Excel without driving it
@Bjørn I dunno but maybe those charging cables which are ratted to 450A/500A whidstands that amount of current for about 10 to 20 min. After that with temp rising the charger derrates. Safety vs cost? You can charge up to 500A but for just 10 to 20min. Maybe?
Trucks charge at ionity and 150kw charger pulling over 400A for 60 minutes sometimes. Bjorn even made a video about those electric trucks. Has to be the car.
@@harsimranbansal5355 OK then 👌 thanks and it makes sense 👍
Why is every car compared to tesla? I know that bjorn is a tesla fan obviously but i think its time to really consider that other brands are really catching up. In coming years (maybe already this year with bmw iX) the other brands will have the same efficient electric drive and then the only thing tesla will have is the charging network. Which i think very few people use to its full potential.
Teslas Charing Network ist already outdated because of the slow speed when u have to share.
Thanks!! So is it normal with EVs not reaching the full charging speed??
What is a good highway speed, for good range to speed balance? 110km/h ?
Is there any information about the 2021 faceliftted IX3 ? Thanks.
How do you choose the optimal speed for the 1000km test
Finally he makes his own food xD no jokes aside good shieet 👍
Great Video, great car, great lights, great interieur 👍 Tell me why I should buy a Tesla ? 🧐
Greetings from Bavaria
@Bjørn Nyland Hi Björn, a number from Atlanta Georgia?
Does anyone know the name of the track at 11:26? I couldn't find it in Bjorn's Artlist playlist.
It was on Artlist but it was removed. I downloaded it before it was removed and have the full rights to use it.
@@bjornnyland Hi Bjørn, thank you for replying. What a shame that it was removed. I guess I will have to watch your videos a bit more often then :-).
Good video 👍
What’s about the grip on the rain, snow or slippery roads, it is not 4 wheel drive , fun for drifting but really safe in any situation ?
2wd can be argued to be safer than 4wd. Statistically, 4wd is bad for safety compared to 2wd.
@@GoldenCroc so far all 2wd EVs that I test in slippery road had rather bad grip due to tork and weight balance , they would not be super safe on snow/wet.This BMW is REar wheel drive if not mistaken which for such a car can be grear on dry roads but not best choice for other type of weather conditions . I saw a review where a guy got surprised by the back sliding in a parking lot due to slippery floor.
@@Watts_is_love That is indeed true, but statistics shows 4wd is even worse, just because it got better grip. This makes people overestimate the grip level of the surface, leading to higher speed accidents. The safest is fwd, then rwd, then last 4wd according to statistics. Its a bit counterintuitive if one is not well versed in vehicles, but the numbers are clear, however they are mostly based on ICE vehicles, yes.
@@GoldenCroc good to know. I have EV since one year and i notices that I drive much more relax and safer . Also noticed than most Other EV driver are also doing so , i wouldn’t be surprise all type of EV are having less accident than ICE véhicules.
worry more about tyres than transmission. if you live somewhere snowy a 2WD with winter tyres bears a 4WD with summer tyres as soon as you need to brake or steer. and chains beat even that. but: chains destroy allows weeks and with an RWD you might need them for steering as well as the drive wheels. i've only ever used chains on front wheel drive passat, so can't assess there.
tip for anyone ever visiting the US: car shops generally sell chains on. "refund if unused" basis, so if you are renting a car for a ski trip, buy them and then return them rather than pay hertz.
The light dance is a joke
Turn your headlights off while charging!
Didn’t pre heat the battery?
No such feature.
Hi Bjørn Nyland,
Did you ever think, you'll have a follower in Chennai, TamilNadu India.
Will this come.to the states?
The biggest issue i have with this car, is that it has BMW's last gen interior from the X3 that came out in 2017 and was already outdated back then when the BMW 3 series came out in 2019 with a much improved interior. While the BMW X3 will get a facelift this year with (hopefully) a much improved interior, the iX3 will not get a facelift at all, which means that iX3 buyers will be stuck with this interior for at least the next 4 years. Beyond disappointed.
"Improvement" has something to do with objectiveness. Your lamenting about issues of your personal taste.
@@outdoorolli5754 that would be the case if im only talking about design and they used the same interior design in their new cars, which they are not. As i said in 2019 they introduced a new generation of design and *tech* . The ix3 doesn‘t even have “Hey BMW” assistant and the software on the infotainment screen is last gen as well. Its not a matter of taste at this point, their tech is literally last generation which will not change for the next 4 years. Imagine this infotainment and tech in 2025 compared to other BMW’s, let alone Tesla, Mercedes or Audi.
aren't they producerd on the same assably line? I think BMW is also updating the ix3, if not yes that would be really annoying.
@@tzarcoal1018 Yes, they are produced on the same assembly line, so does the Mercedes EQC and GLC share a factory and still have a different interior & exterior, the Merc EQS and the S-class share an assembly line too, yet both have different platforms. I read in an article that the iX3 will not get a facelift and i believe that as it just came out and the X3 gets a facelift this year. But im happy to be wrong in this case.
Don’t know about the layout as I don’t follow bmw cars but the tech is definitely up to date. Latest os7 and has voice control as well as driver parking and assistance, android and Apple CarPlay, adaptive headlights, reverse assistance etc
You are forgetting bmw standard comfort, no comments?
BMW is the best built cars in EU
Its designed in the EU, Not build. But thats the important Part.
Thanks for the video. But the dancing headlights are really annoying.
The front grille.....it looks a bit small to me.
can't take this bmw serious without a huge kidney grille ;-)
Nein, nein, nein, one thousand :) Be Em Vee.
Beschmutzende windschutzscheibe! NEIN NEIN NEIN!
Norwegian man, with Thai origin, swears in African-American (shiieeet), amazed in Mexican (holy guacamoley!), counts in German (Nein nein nein!!). Truly a legend.
👍
do you talk swedish
probably if you want accurate price comparison you should compare base price, but also the actual price for the tested vehicle. if the actual difference is minimal, which I suspect then it's only about consumer preference. A 300kW xDrive iX3 would then be how when comparaed to EQC, Etron or iPace?
Nice video. What was the time for the Porsche Taycan?
@Bjørn Nyland Not on whatsap
Naiiijjjn naiiin najjjjn nain!!!!9
It is funny that all guys promote Tesla but people buy Audi
Do they?
The stats tell a different story.
I guess in Norway they buy the highly expensive Audi E-Tron, because with the Norwegian tax reduction they can safe most and when they later sell the car outside Norway they can make the highest profit. That's probably also the reason, why preorders for the luxurious BMW iX are extremely high in Norway.
Chinese Motor Werken.
Chinesische Motoren Werke in case you want it precise. ☺️
The pricing is definitly german.
I built this car on the web and when I saw the price I thought to myself, Why not just buy a Tesla?
Tesla Always Shows customer Prince. BMW Shows list-price. You can always substract 15-20% to get from list price to customer price. Another reason: much better quality with the BMW.
@@R3dL4x 15/20% is quite optimistic.
This is superior to a Tesla. Tesla feels cheap, not luxury
German car... but made in china... as a bmw driver thats a big no thanx, otherwise Id buy it.
It's a big No thanks! 👎
It's a super big, no thanks ! Ev buyers should be considering the big picture and not just $$$$$$.
All models from X3-X7 have been manufactured in the US since YEARS. Have you ever heard about american quality lately? LOL Get to bed and don’t come up you racist trolls
@@ilcomendante Of course ppl boycott Chinese products with racist intentions (sarcasm alert), it’s just because they don’t wanna support them commies over there violating human rights on a daily basis (organ harvesting for example)
@@ilcomendante It is not about quality. It is a political statement protecting european manufacturing and saying fuck you to China and their dirty ways in general. People have no issue buying japanese or South korean made cars. I wonder why? Must be a race issue...
BMW: STOP PUTTING STUPID FAKE MEGA GRILLES ON YOUR ELECTRIC CARS. I will never buy anything with those huge beaver teeth plastered on the front of the car.
what's worse ... the BMW E1 from 1991 already showed a path forward for the BMW look in the EV world. They just need to go back to the roots.
Who cares what you buy - or would like to buy?
@@outdoorolli5754 apparently you did, enough to make a statement about it.
I don’t understand why BWM and Audi are both emulating ICE grills on their electric vehicles.
@@CFG39 apparently it was a statement about your bad style on RUclips.
If this was a real life test, it should 11 hours and not 10,5.
Nope. We're comparing against other cars and in those runs they didn't have traffic problems. That's why 10:30 is corect.
If it was on the same temeratures like most other cars tested, it could have been 10 hours.
Pity the screens in BMW are so tiny. That must be annoying. Legacy car maker design ... SMH ... SUV has a lot of space, but cannot go fast efficiently.
Yes we certainly prefer to have a gigantic ipad stuck in an awkward spot simultanously constricting field of view and robbing driver focus every time it needs to be touched. Sounds brilliant
@@ilcomendante I wonder what you said when the iPhone came out? Just curious.
