China is a tough market for Kpop for obvious political reasons (long story short, China and North Korea have always been anti-democracy and anti-South Korea, they have banned Kpop and Kdramas in the past). Even BTS and TWICE have officially excluded themselves from that market. After Youth With You S2 came out though, Lisa became MEGA POPULAR in China.
I'm not going to state my opinion on it because I'm neither Korean nor Chinese, but I can state the facts. China, like Japan, is an isolated market, but it's a MASSIVE market. I'm sure you've read why almost everyone hates China (I mean the government, the people there shouldn't take the blame) being one of the countries with the worst human rights, their allegiance with Russia bringing down Ukraine, and especially their anti-Western sentiments, and I guess despite being the biggest market, for Kpop companies and other companies really it just isn't worth it. I mean, look at Disney, historically they used to suck up to China and whenever the Chinese government has something to say, Disney easily complies with them and edits out parts they don't like (like depicting China in any bad light) just so their films are allowed to air in China (and with China being the most populated country in the world, it's a HUGE market). China has also been anti-LGBTQ. But now, I'm so happy to see Disney standing up to themselves and now refusing China's conditions, even if that large market is tempting. Sure, it's still not perfect but it's nice to see more and more companies taking a stand against censorship.
