He brought back the true treasure which are the children.
The scene with the sword wielding guy was actually supposed to be a long fighting sequence through several spots. Harrison Ford got dysentery so he was very sick at this scene.. He asked Spielberg if they could cut the whole thing short by just shooting the guy. Spielberg gave his blessing and that is how it is.
