  • Starling Cycles introduced the Roost stainless steel hardtail in 2021. It quickly sold out, and batch 2 is back in stock. Today we take a first look at this beauty. It's a mullet (MX, or 29/27.5) with some party geometry. Starling says they made this bike to be a do-anything hardtail. What do you think? What's your favorite feature? What would you change? Btw.....this bike rides so amazing well through traffic and on the trail. It's made for the harsh weather conditions here, and the dirt feels like sandpaper but sharper. It's extra fine dust but sharp. I can not describe it enough. I am in Northern Vietnam, so things are different here than most would imagine.

It’s great to see you back riding Steve! You are the SME “subject matter expert” on everything to do with hardtail’s from frame material differences to the geo and in depth analysis of design nuances. I really feel like hardtail’s have changed and advanced concepts have finally come to a sweet spot in a few different categories. You know this better than anyone and I look forward to finding out more about more hardtail’s and especially your insights on hardtail’s that are from small builders.

    Beautiful looking bike.
Totally agree about riders changing the trail or making an alternate route. This happens everywhere and I have noticed this on one of my local trails that I ride frequently. I am of the mindset that if you can't ride a feature, either walk it or improve your skills. The only time a trail should be altered is to help control erosion.
Glad to see you out riding!

PS: Props for showing the appropriated trail relationship with hikers. Some mtbikers forget that sometimes and that's a shame.

Thanks Steve, love the mullet hardtails. Have the Santa Cruz Mx, just made a Stanton slackline mullet. It has that same aspect where it rolls faster than the chameleon. Weird! I was going to go with the roost but it was alittle pricier and I was trying to get away from the 63.5 hta thing. As I’m in Marin county and I don’t need that much hta. But now after your review t think I’m going to try it. Mullets have their limitations but they are so fun to rail!

@@hardtailparty not arguing against you, just about the topic.
If in an ideal world everybody had a bike perfectly matched to their size (frame, wheels, handlebars, cranks, everything...) why stop at suspension? For a 210cm tall guy a 140mm fork will feel like a short XC fork for a 160cm girl.
Although i guess, it would be better for full suspension bikes to avoid excess diving.

Great to see you on the bike, and particularly great to see you on this one as I’ve been eyeballing it for a while. How much of the harshness (stiffness) would you attribute to the 27.5 rear wheel? I’m assuming a 29er provides more give. Also, if you’d care to say, what do you think of the Starling over the Chili Dog? Thanks 😊

It has all the same geo qualities you list about this Starling, but I'm not sure I get on with it anymore after riding a couple of other bikes lately. It's a small with a huge reach, and I find for some reason it just jumps awful. Stuck to the ground. Curious what you think about this Roost jumping?

Or what other slightly more aggressive HT would you recommend, IF it is a good idea to sell my ripmo? =)
