Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel A Drive Over The Ocean

- This is a video I made on my Millenniumforce Tour leaving Norfolk Virginia heading to the Eastern Shore of Virginia and on the way I had to cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel which is 17 miles long.
So I thought I would record it from land to land over the bridge and through the tunnels. On the way you will see a barge crossing over the tunnel for which I have to drive under.
So many people here say they're glad you made this video because they're scared to go on this bridge. I'm glad you made this video, but I'd LOVE the chance to go back there again!
Flew over this on my way from Philadelphia to Miami once, what a view from the air! Engineering marvel!
I live next to this bridge. Have been on it countless times when I travel up north. They have a great tourist shop on the bridge. To me its home. Never had problems driving on it. Or in the tunnels. If there are bad storms they close it down. Great video. Thanks for sharing.
I've driven this bridge/tunnel many times and have never thought about recording it. This is very cool, nice work!
Me too
I have three in a semi it's a nice bridge. Got two ships today on dash cam one inbound and one outbound
I have seen this bridge numerous times flying in jets at 33,000 feet up. It's neat seeing it from on high!!!
I am SO glad that you didn't feel compelled to add a rock soundtrack or keep up a steady steam of chatter. Thank you. It's very enjoyable this way for me. (I've crossed the CBBT once, in 1974. I would go again, although those tunnels were murder on my ear pressure.)
I liked the way there was no music, just driving it, too.
LWOPP Agreed. That’s the way it should be. I’ve never driven on this one, although I’ve been on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Maryland numerous times, and this video was as good as driving myself! Very nice work!
Thanks for showing that. I saw a post on Facebook and then I looked it up and then watching your video was like me from San Diego taking a vacation and driving on this. That was fun.
Thank you for making this video without adding music. Makes for a realistic experience. I used to drive on this several times in the mid 1970s.
Virginia Beach native. Thanks for sharing! Traveled this bridge many times from VA Beach to the Eastern Shore of Virginia & Maryland. It will then take you to I-95 on to PA, NJ/NY. There are 3 in the area total. 2 others connect Norfolk/VA Beach to Hampton/Williamsburg. You can even catch a ferry to the historic Jamestown settlement! Many people are even scared to drive across and we do have rideshare services for those folk that will take them across. The height of the crashing waves in high wind is the scariest it gets! 😁
Great video. Like that other guy said, thanks for not putting some cheesy rock music on as "background." Also, thanks for stopping before the tunnel and driving around onto the wayside for the view. Nice touch!
I used to be on that bridge in the year 1977 to 1978 travelling with a southern gospel groups about every weekend. Now I miss it very much.
Looks like a comfortable ride in the car you was driving. You drove the damm thing. Nice video
I love crossing this bridge. I cross it twice a year with my family when we go to Virginia Beach :D
We’ve ridden that a few times,it’s so amazing how they built it seeing the currents below in the bay ! A work of AMERICAN GENIUS !
When I was in the Navy I used to drive from Norfolk to NY and this bridge-tunnel saved me about 2 hours of drive time...I was 20 years old then and thought I was invincible....now there is no freaking way I could drive over this thing...I don’t like bridges anymore
Thank you for serving our country! 🇺🇸
As Did I....in "69
I did that twice, we had a load to deliver and the 18 wheeler I was in took this route for delivery and a pick up at the same location to take back to NYC-Long Island. Brought back memories, Alan, excellent video :o)
Beast too Break Down There ! Looks just like the Harbor Tunnel . Amazing Build ... Great Video
Thanks for posting this, I was just reading about the bridge and it was nice to be able to see what it's like to drive it.
Hooefully what u read wasn't about "Chesepeake Bridge"
This is Chesepeake bridge tunnel...some ppl don't know that..w different bridges
That was AWESOME!!! I'm from Georgia and my dream is to view The Chesapeake Bay and its beauty! I'm an Earth Science Teacher (middle school) and "Earth's Water" is a unit I teach. Thank you sooo much!! 🌏🌅
Went over this bridge when I was 19 (1978ish). Back then it was my father driving over it and I was getting a little anxious seeing nothing but water around me. Friend of mine just moved to Virginia and I just moved to Delaware 2 years ago. As soon as this pandemic is over will have to get over my fear and visit him via this bridge tunnel. This video helps me know how to maneuver through it. Thanks.
Very nicely put together video and very entertaining as well. Showing the ship crossing over was a very cool moment too. Thanks for posting this.
Thanks for the memories. Went over this a couple of times way back in the 60's on a couple of our family trips from Boston to Atlanta, I rode in the back of a Chevy wagon on this bridge. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for sharing this, because I could never drive this bridge. I felt queasy just watching this.
It’s exciting but scary. 😦
Thank You for Making This Video! The thought of going across this, even in an airplane, freaks me out. This video is awesome and answered a lot of my questions. Thanks for not chatting while you recorded it. That made it very relaxing to watch.
Cranes
I drove over this bridge several times when i was trucking, drove one night during a severe T-storm and I thought the winds were gonna push my entire truck over the side of the bridge
That must have been terrifying! This is one bridge I would never go on. It’s crazy in the tunnel. One lane each way? No thanks.
@@AdrianaLaCerva126 oh i understand completely, but when your behind the wheel of a semi and your heading for the tunnel you feel pretty claustrophobic in that little tunnel because the height of the tunnel is only 6 inches at most from the top of your trailor......if there was to be a wreck involving a semi in the tunnel and it caught fire its a very VERY bad day for every car/ truck/ SUV ......i cant imagine that scenario
It's a very, very scary bridge / tunnel ....if you have to use it, DO NOT GO OVER IT IN A STORM, OR EVEN RAIN.
Can 18 wheelers go on this bridge?? And can we even fit in the tunnel?
I remember when that bridge was only one bridge with two lanes going each way. Omg it was scary especially when people would try and pass u 😳😳
Yes and if it was closed you had to take the long way
I lived there when an old freighter, being used as a barge, broke loose and hit the bridge. It knocked a section down, and pushed some out of line. We heard about it on the news, went down to the beach, there it was! Stuck on the shallows, thirty feet away. Big old ship. Taller than the bridge and rusted, red. They managed to pull it free, but the whole thing was shut for a couple of months for obvious reasons.
I've driven this bridge three times solo...crossed 6 times total... that was 25 years ago, today I would never ever drive over a bridge like this I do not know how I did it in the past... it is definitely true, as you get older you get smarter
Yeah. My heart is pounding just watching this video. Can't imagine driving it
I thought I was the only chicken out here
NO THANKS CROSSED OVER THIS BRIDGE TWICE. GIVES ME ANXIETY AND PANIC ATTACKS
awe grow a pair
oh It's just a bridge over water
I WAS HOLDING MY BREATHE THE WHOLE WAY SEEMS LIKE OOWWEEEE THOSE 2 TUNNELS HELLL 2 THE NAW. I can't even take the tunnel from Michigan to Canada!! GREAT VIDEO THANK UUU
I've been over this bridge dozens of times since I was a kid. Its super cool and relatively safe. Way safer than crossing the bay in a boat.
Thank you for making this video drove over this bridge many times going on vacation from New York to Virginia Beach remember when this bridge was two lanes .enjoy driving over this bridge still do.
I was heading to Myrtle Beach in South Carolina. I was going over this bridge at nighttime while a severe thunderstorm was happening! As we were going over, there were high winds and the Lightning kept coming down on the bay and some of the streetlights on the bridge blew out. It was scary but my parents thought it was cool. 😁
I'm sure it was scary, would have made a really cool video.
Rico, sounds like you've got some pretty cool parents! :-)
I have family from the Myrtle Beach area
I live about 3 hours from Myrtle Beach
I have gone through this tunnel on the two trips we took to NC when I was a teenager. I thought it was the coolest thing. Now I'm terrified of bridges and tunnels and couldn't imagine going through this now.
+gi822 why what happened to make you scared? my daughter used to love planes now she is afraid to ride them and can't figure out why?
+Millenniumforce anxiety disorder. I am afraid of flying and tunnels or anything that makes me feel like I'm trapped and can't get out
You mean Claustrophobia?
Very surreal to have to go over ONE bridge, ONE tunnel, then ANOTHER bridge, ANOTHER tunnell, etc.,etc.,etc.ALL in one system over the Chesapeake Bay for over half an hour!
BTW Must be very (1971 version) Wonka like to go into those (scary?) tunnels:
"No one knows the way we're going/but there must be some way of knowing"
Claustrophobia is a silly fear of Santa Claus.
Great video! This trip is on my bucket list.
Grew up in ocean view Norfolk and you could always see it on the horizon at night. Went over and under many times.
Interesting to see a "control sign" saying Philadelphia all the way down in Norfolk, knowing that U.S. Hwy. 13 passes through Pocomoke City, MD, Salisbury, MD, Dover, DE, and Wilmington, DE before reaching Philly.
Thanks for a GREAT video!!!! It's seemingly in true time, too. I crossed as a kid back in the early '60s but don't remember much, and I'd like to do it again and will, Lord willing, thanks to this! It's really the best video I've yet seen, and I especially appreciate knowing that one can pull over just before the tunnel to get a nice view of the sea over the tunnel. It really is more of a causeway for most of the distance than a bridge, and the raised bridge portion seems short. One wonders why they didn't do a higher bridge in the center for the ships instead of two tunnels: perhaps because of currents or whatever (?). Thanks again!
Wow that's a long long ride over water...
I just read that there have been 14 over the rail fatal crashes since 1984, 11 of which were trucks. The most recent one, the bridge people sued the truck company for $70k.
I just went over this bridge last week and thought it was beautiful. After reading that, i think its slightly less beautiful.
I used to drive on it when I went to Virginia Beach through New Jersey - it definitely has less traffic - it's a bit scary when you get out there and have water all around you around 10 miles out but you get used to it and you can't turn around. I have heard of people freaking out when they are out there but just keep your eyes on the road and it will be OK
Same thing with the Lake Pontachtrain Causeway both of these bridges are interesting engineering feats
My father recently reminded me about the time he traveled this route. No bay bridge tunnel, you had to take a ferry! Let's see who can remember those days!
I Love your Awesome video!!! TY 4 Sharing this bc me & my Son Conquered our Fear this Past March 2017 & we will be back 4 the Water!!! Awesome!!!
So amazing and intimidating at the same time. Would like to drive it once. Growing feeling of need to see land really soon.
Awesome video my parents took me across this when I was a kid around 1980 it was only 2 lanes back then
This is awesome. I miss being on that bridge. The gift shop/restaurant was kinda cool since I was last there. Looks like they raised the toll since I was there as well.
I have driven this bridge tunnel many times, eventhough it has been quite a few years ago. What couldn't be seen is the restaurant that is in the middle of the spans. There is a pier there also. We're had stopped there and had breakfast one time. Do not know of it is still there or not. I may make this trek down there this summer and find out. Excellent video. Keep up the great work. Have fun, stay safe and stay healthy.
When we went on this magnificently engineered Bridge Tunnel we actually went under a USN ship going to port.
Used to work with a guy who did all the surveying on that bridge during its construction. until 2010, my brother lived in Va, Beach, used to drive that about 4 times a year.
Thanks, John, great video tour, I'll never use this span, perhaps when I was younger, I'd do it. I can't believe that the Government, allowed both the right and left lanes, to merge into one tunnel, crazy! Posting to my Facebook page.
As soon as I get my new motorcycle, this will be my first destination 😍 I LOVE bridges!
I love this picture 🎉
Lucius J. Kellam Jr. Bridge Tunnel, remember that ceremony well. Still have my numbered limited edition print. Thank you for two great years, best job I ever had.
1983, my parents, brother and myself going across that bridge in the midst of a thunderstorm, terrifying. I think my mom is still shaking.
Similar experience in 1985. Waves were high and rough with spray splashing over guardrails
@@mariannebonner2280 We had the exact same experience!
OMG
My wife had a business trip to Norfolk, VA from Texas and I accompanied her on her flight there. She rented a car once there for her trip. We decided to take a drive to this bridge. I drove one way, then we turned right back and she drove back.
Awesome Video Alan!
It is like driving across an ocean! Longest bridge ever!
Freedomtower Studios that's true but the longest 1 try in New Orleans
Freedomtower Studios beautiful picture by the way
thomas benson yes. The bridge over lake ponchatrain
Freedomtower Studios was it scary going through underground?
Actually, when you take the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, you're crossing the......wait for it.....Chesapeake Bay!!
thanks thank thanks thank and thanks and you and you and you made so glad
My family and I drive over this bridge 🌉 every year to go to cape hatteras North Carolina
I have really bad anxiety & have panic attacks . It was hard for me to watch this . Supposed to go to FL in the next 2 weeks & more then likely i have to drive over this well my husband !
Be safe 🙏🏽❤️
Awesome video, for the past month I take the trip from north jersey to VA Beach every 2 week's to go visit my new born son.. drive is good but riding by this bridge is straight awesome and makes my 6hr trip worth it (besides visiting my son) .. think I'll record my trip next time .. great video again!
superb vid ,THANKS, from the UK.
Just by watching it it’s giving me an anxiety attack, I don’t know how people can drive on bridges longer that 12 feet.
I was there in 98 or 99 when I was a kid. It was/is super cool
That ocean is huge dont want to have car trouble stuck in the middle of nowhere the engineering is awesome !!!
I would love to cross that bridge!! Thanks for the upload!! 👍👍😎😎🇺🇸🇺🇸
My family and I drive over this bridge 🌉 to get to cape hatteras North Carolina and it’s pretty cool 😎
I drove over this bridge on my motorcycle in 1981 , I was much younger then, I wouldn’t do it now, hell no, it was scary then
Longest bridge, EVER. At least it doesn’t go high up. Those are the ones that scare me. I am terrified of heights, especially on something that is suspension, and arches into the clouds. Cars shouldn’t be that high into the air. No thank you.
Danyang-Kunshan Bridge in China - 104.2 miles. Longest bridge, EVER.
@@thomasmann9216, OMG!! I would have a heart attack before I even got on it, lol!!!
T Watson, I feel the same way!! I want no parts of a bridge at all, let alone a HIGH one. I HATE those things! They scare me to death. I don't fly either, and since I drive everywhere, I have to literally map out the entire drive on mapquest, JUST to make sure that there aren't any bridges to cross!!! If there are, I either find a way around it, or keep my butt home!!!
dazzlingdi who the hell uses Mapquest anymore?! 😂
Bridges be looking like you going to heaven lol.
And I would break out in cold sweats driving over the Tappen Zee bridge!
Actually $13.00 for a 17-mile bridge isn't that bad, that about $ 0.75 a mile, good deal considering what it would cost in gas to drive around.
Cost more to go around. Found that out last summer lol
Going around not only costs more in money, but also in time & if going through Washington, DC you have the I-95/I-495/I-395 parking lots.
That $13.00 was several years ago!....now it costs around $15.00
You save 125 miles and two hours from Virginia Beach to NY
When I did this route it happened to rain it was a cloudy rainy scary drive
The tunnels do not have much of a height clearance especially for the 18 wheelers. They definitely need to build another tunnel to separate the north and southbound traffic.
The second Thimble Shoal Channel tunnel is under construction, when that one is finished, the second Chesapeake Channel tunnel will be built and it will be a 4 lane bridge tunnel with 2 lanes in each direction.
@@christopherorourke6543 That bridge won’t be completed for a long long time.
where are the toilets incase i need to pull over and take a poo?
It’s very scary. I prayed the whole time.
@@michaelmagic988 You can stop on the islands, like he did. I sure the nice construction people will let you in.
I was so happy to see trees.
Thank you for sharing....
Cool video of the pavement.
You're my hero I could never get over that bridge I have watched your video for your years if you ever come to Boston or Providence let me know
eric devine Thank you!! The closest I will be to you is Six Flags Over New England Springfield Masachussettes on June 25TH
eric devine b. U
The Mackinac Bridge (UP Michigan to Mackinac Island) is another bridge folks have someone who works on it to drive for you.... it's that scary for some. I LOVED it!!
This is deja Vu. I've seen this ride in my dreams before. Wow
We lived in VBeach and husband, navy, was stationed in Earle NJ for 2 years..I drove this bridge every other week, all hours, all weather...when he wasn't deployed..9/11 happened during his tour..but that's what sailor's families do plus I too, was a sailor! Remember in 04, I think, Melanie McGuire, drove from NJ OVER THE BRIDGE AND DROPPED 3 LUGGAGE PIECES OF HER HUBBY..OVER THE LOOKOUT..THEY WASHED ON SHORE! 😬
I have driven over it myself on my way home from Virginia Beach and in person it is even cooler.
I never took a drive on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel before when I first knew about it & when I first watched it in 2014.
I've never been there and this was interesting to say thanks for sharing
Wow... I enjoyed that! Watched end to end.. great stuff!
nice thanks for sharing
I've never been on Chesapeake bay bridge tunnel but at least i get to see what looks like driving on it. Cool video.
I drove it once. Claustrophobia, fear of heights, the roller coaster and the speeding cars that (angrily) shot past me made this the most dangerous drive I've ever taken.
Yes... me too....will never use it again !
I had an anxiety attack driving on that bridge I almost literally stopped my car on the bridge
Then you shouldn't be driving, LULW
I hear ya. It happened to me on the Delaware bridge.
jacob you idiot he said not the road he said the bridge you fk moron!!!!!!!
I understand. Scary
This isnt even the bad one. The Bay bridge is far worse. It is the heights that get me.
LOL when the music started at the end it startled me a little.
I know.. I've been over it. I lived and grew up in Hampton roads area. Hated that bridge . then worked for a concrete pumping co and sent guys over there to fix parts of it. I still won't go over it lol 15 years later
I wouldn't either, Teresa!!
On this in the late 50's or early 60's when it was still a single roadway, and later about 1980 - don't recall whether it had been twinned by then or not. The wife (on the 1980 trip) was more than a little upset, but managed. Our daughter was there about ten years ago, while the bridge was very popular and very busy. She and some girlfriends had to wait a couple hours before they could use it. Finding a rest room became a priority....
I wouldn't be scared driving over this bridge for some reason.
Wow what a fishing spot
I’ve gone on the bay bridge not tunnel and it is very crowded with there being only two lanes for each side of the road but it is my favorite part of the trip lots of good sights around the bridge.
I get anxious just watching these kind of videos.
Hello its me again and bridges still bother me.
When I first got married, we lived in Chick's Beach, right, at the end of the trees , on the Va.Beach side! We could hear the 18 wheelers shifting through the gears. We would stand under it, and gaze at the infinity of columns, off into the distance.I was a busboy at the restaurant on the first island. He didn't go over there, he just turned around . Used to be a fishing pier there, also!
I went on this bridge on July 2014 and I was scared for some reason. I hate bridges
Thats in my neck of the woods now!
I love going on this bridge to the outer banks but I’m sad because I haven’t gone there since 2017 I want to see this amazing bridge again
I like the bay bridge tunnel.
I don't
Excellent video, Alan! Thank you for posting it, it was a treat to watch. Would love to know what kind of camera you used. No focusing errors, adjusted to the light in the tunnels very well, and it never skipped a beat. Well done, my Friend!
you couldnt pay me to go over this
Wow n I love this tunnel bridge such an experience
No you have to pay
It's not that bad,I used to live on the Eastern Shire of Virginia, and have been on this many times!...its a great ride
This looks like hella fun, until someone's car stalls. Now driving at night... 'Hell no! I won't go."
I'm gonna be driving over it tonight, honestly terrified haha
I drove over first time middle of the night in a semi. Bridge looked like it disappeared in front of you
@@TheInkyAbys how was it
