This video is exactly why I love this channel so much. This is a deep dive into something I was interested in and covers all the details and then some to make me more knowledgeable on purchasing this machine. Thanks again for another great video.
Great tips! I would have mentioned power supplies. It's hit or miss whether they will come with the unit or not. It's usually noted, but a lot of people don't know to look out for that.
And also: you need the official power supply, apparently. You can't just source a compatible voltage power supply and plug connector, because HP looks for low-voltage identifier pin. (Apparently it's easy to remedy if you can solder a resistor internally)
@@ArtofServer I saw you are selling it on eBay. I am in Canada and I may buy it from you. What do I do if I want to increase the RAM or storage? Can it be done? I am talking about the specific one you posted on your eBay account. How about AES-NI support?
@@NetITGeeks Yeah, regarding RAM upgrade, checkout this video: ruclips.net/video/pV1iPJ6vmhE/видео.html And yes, AES-NI support works... one of the reasons why this is a great option for pfsense.
yeah, these are great for that type of use too. Also, take a look at the T730 thin client as well, it's a more powerful machine but still very low power.
The R3 in it isn't too great for video playback, it'll work for low end stuff, but it'll struggle with higher end videos, and the R3 is horrible with RUclips, the GT 1030 fixed that, but if pared with a GT 1030 it pretty much can handle most kinds of videos even high bitrate UHD videos. And the funny thing is that it can do lite gaming as well (I use mine to play elite dangerous and American truck simulator). It'll also do emulation pretty decently.
Thanks for your excellent video. Today I purchased HP T620Plus with the bracket on ebay. So far I have tried HP EliteDesk and ProDesk, now I am going to shift HP Thin Client. If possible, I want to install Windows 10. I expect that the machine is the enterprise or digital license and also HP products are very easy maintenance without tools.
The T620+ is plenty powerful for win10, quite the uberkill for a firewall. Using it as a 15W desktop makes a lot more sense in my opinion. Can even be fitted with a PCI Graphics card for heavy gaming (together with a desktop PSU) where the 4X CAT5 port card is originally. Secondly, it is not a mSATA port internally in the T620+ you are pointing out but a mini PCIe port, and it is only wired for serial to connect to a mini PCIe wifi, modem or network card, so it won't work with a mSATA SSD or a mini PCIe SSD either (both mSATA and mini PCIe use the same connector, but they are different and a lot of people mistakes the two). You can solder on a mini PCIe connector and a few SMD resistors to make it work if you got the kind without. Thirdly, the Display Port has digital audio, so if you buy a Display Port to hdmi adaptor , you have an excellent set top box or silent PC.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I agree, these machines are versatile and surely can be used in many different ways. Although, i'm not sure about adding a GPU with a desktop PSU is practical, but there are GPUs that will run without extra power and work just fine. That said, I think you're mistaken about the mSATA vs miniPCIe. There is a miniPCIe for a wifi adapter, and that's at the lower left corner in the video. The "mSATA" that i point to that is missing in Rev B boards, is in fact mSATA. I have a Rev A system i run with a mSATA SSD in that port that I use as a cache drive; so I've confirmed this fact. I also have a another unit with the wifi card in the miniPCIe slot, so you are right that there is a miniPCIe slot, but it is not the same as the mSATA slot I pointed out as the difference between Rev A vs Rev B.
@@ArtofServer Sorry, yes, I thought you were pointing at the white connector next to the CPU which is only fitted to some. The flash rom is plugged into a mSATA connection or a m.2 connector on models after 2014: www.parkytowers.me.uk/thin/hp/t620/
the GX-420ca when it comes to gaming just lacks the grunt for heavy gaming, for lite gaming its decent. the GT 1030 will be the best that you can fit into the T620 plus. i own a t620 plus with a GT 1030 (the DDR5 version) and the CPU performance is a pretty big hindrance. anything faster than a GT 1030 would be a waste as the CPU is just too slow to push a higher end GPU (the CPU cant even push the GT 1030 in games) i mean it will play elite dangerous at 720p with a mix of high and medium settings but you'll see stuttering galore especially around a station, performance by yourself is not too bad it hovers around 50-60, but framerate tanks when near a station, and is decent when in an SRV on a planet. performance in fortnite is not too good, i had to cap the framerate at 30 as the CPU just cant keep up even at 720p and lowest possible settings. it plays world of warships at 720p with low settings pretty decently. it'll play halflife 2 with ease you'll see triple digit framerates most of the times , it'll play COD MW2 with a slight hint of performance degradation on larger maps, CS:go is pretty unplayable with framerates in the 20s-30s it does run Windows 10 decently, but it can get a little sluggish at times for no apparent reason , but besides that it surfs the web pretty decently, will do 4k video with ease thanks to the gt 1030 (the on board iGPU just couldn't do 4k video, which is why i slapped a GT 1030 in it) , its really quiet even at full load which makes an awesome HTPC.
@Womb Raider The only thing I haven't tried, is to get audio from the Displayport, rest is good info. I have bought recently one with 2 serial ports, rev B of course and the DISPLAY ports were not active/or might be defective. Adding a video card does not solve the problem. The unit was booting up but only from onboard video card. So I had to measure all the 16 pins from the VGA header found on the motherboard. Finally I got the partial pinout and got the VGA signal displayed on a monitor. However I would like to have the complete schematics of this small VGA cable which is nowhere to be found.
