The most unrealistic part about this skit is that the Defence Secretary actually takes advice from a general officer to heart.

New Zealand had a defence minister like that in the early 2000's. A vegan who got rid of the fighter wing of the Airforce. Bought twice as many Canadian LAV's than we had a use for, to replace the US M113's, and Pinzgaures to replace the Land Rovers, before their production ceased, presumably resulting in a spares problem. Excellent chap.

Well, moreso the Tories given, you know, it's a skit about a uniquely incompetent Tory Minister. But yes, our Ministerial system where those appointed are not required to have any experience or specific knowledge of their area of concern whatsoever really does seem a substandard way to govern a country. We probably need a somewhat more blended system incorporating meritocratic advancement through bureaucracy with an elected element.

It is, thankfully, slightly better in the UK than the US. Mostly because to become a member of the Cabinet, you need to be a member of Parliament (either Commons, or the Lords). Which rather limits the pool of idiots to choose from. Unfortunately, it limits the pool to politicians. Of course, we also have such positions as the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and the Lord Privy Seal, whose official duties consist of... sitting on the Cabinet. Thats it. The Duchy can run itself, and the Privy Seal became obsolete in 1884 (and is not to be confused by the Great Seal, which is what the monarch uses on official documents). Oh, and Prime Ministers can also appoint Ministers Without Portfolio, which again, have no official duties but sitting on the Cabinet (although that one might or might not come with the pay. Not sure).
