I worked there for a month in St. Pete and had to cross that thing 2 times a week, always in the inside lane and fought panic attacks everytime. I don't know why I watched this as I am twiching now just remembering

You should have driven the old bridge, and maybe you did, you didn't say, but the old bridge was even more terrifying.. It was much steeper, and it was a dual bridge. The first bridge built was only two lanes and opened in 1954, the second bridge was added about 15 year later, opening in 1971. One of them was hit by a a freighter ship, causing the collapse of the mid section. There were several fatalities when traffic drove off the bridge, not realizing it had collapsed. The replacement bridge, the one in the video opened in 1987.

@@MarinCipollina I couldn't agree with you more about the old bridge being even more terrifying. I went to Sarasota every year for vacation and had the 'pleasure' of driving over it several times....which is how I learned to drive with my eyes closed! Even more terrifying was riding over the old bridge, AFTER the accident, on the one span that was open...at night! Thank God I wasn't driving then.

The old span of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge was featured in "Smokey and the Bandit II" in the montage of the Roy Rogers song "Ride Concrete Cowboy Ride".

I couldn't do this. I'm terrified of bridges. My worst nightmare is going over the railing of a bridge into the water. In Maryland there are guys who have a business where they will drive you in your car over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.

Same, not usually afraid of heights but there is something about this bridge that scares the heck out of me, now the Chesapeake Bay Bridge does not scare me, I guess because its not tall and intimidating as this one!

I guess it has been a long time since I've been across it. The chainlink fencing is "new". Apparently to reduce the number of suicides. Do they still have the suicide counseling hotline phones at the top? I've crossed this bridge (and the previous structure) hundreds of times since we moved to Florida in 1968. It never gets old.

I don't know the answer to that question about the suicide hotline phones. But they should have kept them.

The origonal bridge was scary, because the center span floor was see-through as it was built of steel rods not concrete.

      Wow...Yeah that would be Scary.

    • @sharpestjim

Anybody who describes the present structure as "scary" has, obviously, never seen the original Skyway. My buddies and I used to love crossing it on our motorcycles. There was about 1000 feet of steel grating (like you see on drawbridges) at the top. It was an absolute rush to look straight down and see water 180 feet below. The current structure is way cool; no doubt about it. But the concrete railings and less-steep incline provide nowhere near the same experience.

I thought I was the only one nervous about this bridge. I moved to Florida more than 5 years ago from Connecticut after retirement. I have never crossed this bridge and I NEVER will. Just watching this bridge on RUclips makes me hold my breath. But, this man's video is very good and interesting. Good day to everyone.

Supposedly, the bridge is haunted. Given the history of why the present structure even exists to begin with, I believe it. That bridge gives me the heebie-jeebies just LOOKING at it.

@@pauljohnson5347 Well, the Summit Venture accident killed dozens, and there have been over 200 unsurvivable high dives taken from the thing. That much death in one place, would probably do that.
Besides, I'm local. People talk. ESPECIALLY this time of year.

This bridge is very tall and picturesque. As far as scary. It is pretty scary. But nearly as scary as the old cantilever bridges that were the predecessors to this bridge. I remember as a kid riding over the old 1954 bridge and seeing the 1971 span completely knocked out at the top. When the Summit Venuture crashed into pier 2s of the southbound span it took out a 1,200 ft section of the bridge. They considered at 1st just repairing the existing bridge at the time. They decided to build this bridge up to interstate standards. They already had plans to retrofit the old bridge until May 9 1980 when the accident occurred. After that they postponed putting the i275 shields up till after the new bridge was built.
