If I were to live in the Philippines, I’d live in Cebu or Manila. I like the balance of western conveniences with the vibrant culture of the Philippines.
Watching your videos inspired me to live in the Philippines (BGC) 3 months out of the year when husband and I retire. We will first start off with staying for a month and hopefully my husband will adapt to it and be willing to stay longer like 3 months per year.

The poverty is overwhelming. It is very sad. My wife and I are collecting shoes and clothes for kids in the subic bay and pangasinan area. Those kids aren't given much opportunities like they have here in the US.

Manila rocks! Love thar traffic, the food the places, shopping, restaurants of all varieties , we never get bored here. Wife, the kids and I never get bored so much to do. We don't work so we have plenty of time to be with family.
Love your videos brother. I've done Manila spending time there and I've done the mall hopping there and the more time you spend in Manila the more restaurants you learn about. I live in Manhattan and I've lived in Santo Domingo and Manila has traffic unlike any traffic I have ever seen but they drive better in Manila than they drive in Santo Domingo. I do 4 to 5 month stays during the summer in the Philippines. I've lived in Cebu City, Dumaguete, Manila, and Davao City. I have to say that Davao City had something unique about it. Davao City was very safe and there's a lot to do in Davao City and a very good balance of everything. They plan on building a bridge to connect Davao City to Samal Island and that worries me because it might change Davao City congestion wise etc. I'll be in Manila for a brief time next summer 2023 and I hope we can meet for a coffee ☕. Good video, but I think you understated the traffic by a bit. Going from the airport to BGC which is only 8km(3 miles) away, it take more than 30 mins in off hour. The buses are running better now though.
Awesome video, fella! So good. I am going to love BGC and MAKATI (Greenbelt, Poblacion, Rockwell) high end clean amenities, and easy access Tagatay nature and Batangas beaches. Plus the Manila airport makes it easy to fly to Aklan Boracay or anywhere! BGC/MAKATI, what a perfect place to live. World class!
Can you do a comparison of living in Manila and Cebu? I currently live in BGC but may move when my lease is up in April. I may stay here or at least in Manila, but I'd like to know about Cebu.
you was on point about the traffic. i was there in las pinas in november staying in the red doorz hotel and the first time i had to cross the street took almost 15 minutes!! then my friends from there pretty much showed me that i had to play the game frogger to do it lol. but still, i enjoyed myself there and can't wait to go again this year. thanks for the vid!!!

Our paid off home is in Pampanga but my employer's offices are in BGC. So i'm planning on renting a "studio" in BGC and commuting back and forth on weekends. My wife was born here but lives now in states for 20 years. We will collect Social security ($3k) but will double dip with a job. Is there a train station north end of city that I could park and take train/ subway to BGC? Thus avoiding driving in the city. I do this now in NYC, I park on Jersey side (Jersey City) and take train into NYC.
We just discovered you yesterday, and binge watched your videos last night. Superb content and editing! Would love to see comments or even a video on how ex-pats can connect with other couples once they get to Manila. We plan to retire there for at least the winter months sometime in the future but don’t know anyone there.
Great list of pros and cons. I also lived in Chicago for 20+ years and love mega cities. I will try out Makati for a month and also explore BGC as a possible retirement destination, hoping I will love it. Looking forward to part 2
@@rickmccarroll9993 well I looked it up and as expected you can travel from either the pacific or Atlantic sides. On pacific you have Asiana. Not bad but older planes a budget korean airline. Atlantic you can fly Qatar which is consistently ranked as one if not the best airlines in the world. You will have to go from Nashville to a major hub like Chicago first. These will take you to manila.. from there you will be at the mercy of the airlines in the Phillipines. Which are cheap but you get what you pay for. Safe travels friend. BTW where you sit on plan effects your experience. Do some research if you don't already know.

yes, it's probably living in Makati or BGC for that will give you a western lifestyle. The benefit is you can have a good social life, friends and things to do with other people as well as dating.
Where do you go to play tennis? Last time I was there, it was hard to find decent tennis courts let alone find honest players that know their personal USTA rating - then again its the same here about players upping their rating here in NYC, lol. You must consider age in this. I am 69 and would not want to live in Manila. When you age you want quite. So province is the life for me. I go Manila when I get bored in province which is few and far between 😂

Hi Savvy Expat. Being there's a lot of Western men considering retirement in Makati or BGC, it would be really cool if you could interview someone (Filipino or Westerner) that is disabled, i.e., uses a wheelchair to get around in Makati and/or BGC. A good start would be to interview a Physical Therapist in Makati or BGC. They probably know of patients that they've worked with who rely on wheelchairs to get around there. From what I've seen, there's there are some curb cuts and ramps for wheelchair users and the hospitals and medical care in Makati/BGC are quite good, compared to other locales (smaller Cities and provinces) in the Philippines. I was thinking if a guy had a good income, but was a wheelchair user, if he situated himself in the right place in Makati or BGC, he might be able to access everything he needs within a pretty short distance...but that's just a guess.

How do you live in the Philippines if I cannot tolerate the local cuisine but still want to dine out on a regular basis within a low budget? I imagine that would be impossible.
Cons: traffic. No. Learn the system and u can go anywhere fast in Manila. Buses, Metro, taxis Higher cost of living: Still cheaper than the US Poverty: Every where in the world. So just enjoy the wonderful areas in Manila. Why would u visit LA and go to skid row. Manila is awesome. offers u so much. Pollution: not sure where this is at: Winds keep the air clean, trash is pick up regularly and the beautiful nights are amazing , warm yea, but amazing. Wealth Gap: Not here to compete with the Crocked politicians or every single person is a model or actor. I am here to spend my money, help people and find that person to help me navigate my experience. Manila is lovely. Perfect, no, but great yes

I'm curious about your thoughts on Tagaytay...I know you mentioned it as a close getaway for those living in Manila, but what do you think about living in Tagaytay and using Manila and Batangas as you "getaway" destinations...? I know everyone says, "But what about Taal...? 😱" but my thought about that is, people always get 2-3 days warning before any significant eruption, so there's always time to go to Manila for a few days, if/when Taal burps...so as long as you have a car/motorbike, I don't see the volcano as a serious threat to my life... No my rented condo might get covered in ash, which may create some expense for my landlord if the building needs to make special assessment of unit owners to afford repairs, but as a renter, it's my biggest concern. As an American, another reason I am thinking about Tagaytay is the weather!! It's so much cooler than Manila, I feel like Ill spend much more time enjoying the outdoors than I would in Manila (especially during the middle of the day). And when I need/crave some benefit found only in Manila, I've heard it's only about a 90min drive on the toll road, to get to the city or the airport (not bad). I do have to acknowledge that I'm retired, so Manila's job opportunities aren't really a factor for me. If I needed a good job, I think Manila would be almost a required location. Anyway, just a thought, and I'd love it if you'd share your thoughts on being based in Tagaytay in a future video! I just discovered your channel, and I love it so far. Does one have to drive to live here? Is it possible to purchase a condo within walking distance of everything? Would it be too dangerous for a single older woman over 60 to retire here? Your thoughts are greatly appreciated on this. Thanks!
Shopping for meats and fish *on the roadside* or *open market stalls* where the meats\fish stay out in the warm\hot weather for ages is for me a recipe for disaster: this will make me ill. Food hygiene is something I take very seriously. So I tend to shop at SM.
😎👍🇺🇸 I think it all depends your personal mentality. Either you're a city person or you're not. Or maybe you're something on between? Of course most Xpats are older retired people. Most likely wanting to slow down and relax. The city usually doesn't offer a relaxing lifestyle. Personally. I'd rather live 10-15 minutes ride out of town and 30-60 minutes outside of the major city. I don't mind visiting the city. Tagatay only 1-2 hours away? Are you kidding??? Last time we went from Carmona to Tagatay it took more like 4-6 hours (a shorter trip).

And when I need/crave some benefit found only in Manila, I've heard it's only about a 90min drive on the toll road, to get to the city or the airport (not bad). I do have to acknowledge that I'm retired, so Manila's job opportunities aren't really a factor for me. If I needed a good job, I think Manila would be almost a required location. Anyway, just a thought, and I'd love it if you'd share your thoughts on being based in Tagaytay in a future video! I just discovered your channel, and I love it so far. I am pretty sure Evan and I think one of the Filipina's from Savvy Expats have covered Tagatay, some fancy hotel they have definitely covered in Tagatay.

Shopping for meats and fish *on the roadside* or *open market stalls* where the meats\fish stay out in the warm\hot weather for ages is for me a recipe for disaster: this will make me ill. Food hygiene is something I take very seriously. So I tend to shop at SM.
Philippines is just good for touring not for retirement.

Either you're a city person or you're not. Or maybe you're something on between?
Of course most Xpats are older retired people. Most likely wanting to slow down and relax.
The city usually doesn't offer a relaxing lifestyle.
Personally. I'd rather live 10-15 minutes ride out of town and 30-60 minutes outside of the major city.
I don't mind visiting the city. I don't stay long enough for the horribleness of it all to get me frustrated.
Of course I'm speaking from a western mind. So it doesn't count.😏
