Pure gold, just love how they were forced to invent ways to achieve that iconic 80's sound. Just goes to show ,if you have an idea, & are passionate, push it, it just might turn out great.
I love the original video of being boiled. Great original video of being boiled, i laughed with the dancers that appears with astronaut dresses in the video. Funny video and great. Being boiled original video fascinates me 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
@electrozaps Have a listen to the rhythm track on Almost Medieval and ask yourself was there a drum machine on the market at the time that could beat that? Awesome.
It was all about the same time. No point in nit picking, to define who or when. The point being who made the biggest impact at the time.It was all very new in the 1970's. Synth's did't take off in main stream until the 1980's
@electrozaps Yeah there probably were but can you imagine them lot using preset BosaNova beat etc straight off a drum machine? Also, none of them probably had anything like sync out to trigger the sequencer. The first AFFORDABLE programmable drum machine ever made was Boss DR55 and that came out in 1980.I think Daniel Miller also played the drum beats on Warm Leatherette by hands.
@lordvespatron The System 100 is top of my wish list and the keyboard synth part of it alone (without the expander) goes for well over a grand these days). Having said that the entire system in probably still cheaper that a MiniMoog.
@electrozaps you're right. i think he just got mixed up, i think he meant that his fave drum machine, Linn, came about a couple of years later. this Roland thing here, unmentioned, is a fab piece of equipment, and today it is a lot more expensive than Moogs!
@foodafokkarez Roland CR78 came out in 1978. it was programmable. if you were signed to a major label the CR78 would have been AFFORDABLE. i digress, you seem to be missing my point some what. Phil says NO ONE HAD INVENTED DRUM MACHINES around that time....... i was merely pointing out there were lots of drum machines available around that time ;-)
There were but they sounded like someone hitting a cornflakes box. The first drum machine that had any real punch was the linndrum. But a track like being boiled wouldnt have sounded right with a drum machine. It was supposed to be pure synth. Ive made similar sounds on my DX11.
@Animateme3D Ultravox's debut album and Bowie's 'Low' used drum machines in '77. They just didn't sound as good as what you could get out of a System 100 if you knew what you were doing. Vince Clarke's favoured source of beats is the semi-modular Arp 2600 - obviously not a dedicated drum machine.
Is that the same Roland System 700 that is in Heaven 17's studio? Given that they still aren't really talking to each other, I wonder how that was managed. Shame, really.
fully programmable were a bit rarer but, I cringed when he said that ( I pictured Martin Rev of suicide with his select a rhythm/rhythm prince etc , throbbing gristle, Jarre the list goes on...
You guys never knew how big an impact you would make on the world of music by coming up with this, it's awesome.
Fabulous Phil Oakey; quite literally the soundtrack to a generation!

Phil is so HOT!
I love how they dance the dancers with astronaut dresses that appears in the video. Hahaaahaaaa

Nope. Regular drums on "Low", processed through a harmonizer.
@@mmmcomfy For the most part, yes, but drum machines appear on side 2 (Art Decade for example).
@@JT4CD You're right - my bad.
Nice

Thats not a Roland System 700. Those are massive. This is a System 100 non-m.
On hire purchase I am betting?
c,mon phil....@ 3.34....... there were plenty of drum machines around in 77 ;-)
Maybe he just didn’t know about it. Human League were just working class blokes that didn’t have access to all the information. No one did really.
@@slowbike1 Actually Phil wasn't a technical musician in the band.

There's nothing wrong with drum machines.
What's the difference between a drummer and a drum machine? With a drum machine, you only have to punch the rhythm in once.
