Your guess is as good as mine. Given the fact that he's left Heaven 17 too and went awol I believe - gives the impression there was some fallout. And/or he probably wanted a career change and to put the past in the past as he went to university and is a music teacher.
Not the only band in the 70s to find a singer just because he looked good. Bauhaus got Peter Murphy this way and it was just a coincidence he turned out a great singer
