I've never seen a "thumb cup" before and at first I thought it had been accidentally dented and accepted as imperfect, but the minute you said thumb cup I got it, pictured how it would feel in my hands and now I want one, like, a lot. It seems so cozy. I'm very particular about mugs but use one all day every day. I barely ever use the handle and am very much a two handed mug holder and I just think it would feel so nice to hold.
@@rainygray249 this is a very solid point, I usually use a thermal insulated metal cup, so I'll admit that didn't even cross my mind. It'd still be nice for Iced coffee or cold drinks.
Your cute little mushrooms inspired me to make my own cute little mushrooms in the form of an emoji, so thanks for that. This cup looks lovely, by the way.
Love it! I had a pottery major friend in college and she made the most perfectly comfortable to hold cups I've ever put my hands on. You could turn each one 360° and it would always fit comfortably in your hand. It was some kind of crazy pottery trickery! She'd excitedly show me each cup when it was finally leather hard. She made me a mug too, but it was a totally different style and didn't feel quite as nice to hold. Still, my friend made it, and I love it. ❤ I love the little shrooms on this one! I've never seen anyone do a resist of liquid latex before, but it makes so much sense!
@@tortured_ape I meant like everything I make is hideous, and I just wish I could call one thing I make cute instead of noticing inferior things and realizing it’s horrendous. Again, I apologize.
I use a masking fluid like this stuff when I’m painting watercolors, I just have to use it on the areas I want to stay white/not paint on (at all or during that layer/wash), Is such a useful material! I've done ceramics for a long time but I was confused for a second. I've never used latex, always a wax resist which is clear or white and melts off in the kiln. It's cool to see another technique to accomplish the same goals
I loved the result it was beautiful but in my opinion I think it would better if you did the background color first then did the mushrooms so you wouldn’t have to use the latex at all
the glaze would ruin the mushroom illustration. If you've ever taken ceramics you would know that the white glaze she dipped her cup in is the type to shift/melt in a kiln.
It doesn't. I am glad she likes her result I have some critiques but I will keep it to myself. That said the mushrooms are cute, but she created a weak point. Glaze is to add an extra layer of protection so one can wash and not have it effect the solidity of the ceramic item.
The latex is only there to "seal" the mushrooms from getting the white speckled glaze on them when she dips it. It's okay that she removes it after because it did it's job. Glazes have silica glass in them which melts at high temperatures. The mushrooms are likely made of glaze as well so once it's fired in the kiln, everything will be properly sealed against water
@@houndgirl7365 Are you firing hot enough/double firing? Because the majority of ceramics have an unglazed edge to prevent them from sticking to the kiln and it doesn't affect their water resistance
Never done pottery, but the liquid latex seems like a smart idea. Don’t really like how a border forms around the mushroom but ig that’s just personal preference. Guess you could always put a black border around it or something.
imo it would look better if there was more precision to putting on latex, because there is this ugly yellowish outline and that just doesn't look so pleasant for me
I had never heard of this that I know of but she called it a thumb cup, so I'm assuming that dent is for your thumb to have some grip so you can hold it comfortably and securely. I like the idea of it 😊
Fascinating ❤ I don’t know about you, but I love the process of making art as much as the end result. If I had to choose, I’d personally prefer the pink color with the mushrooms, but I still love what you created! Never heard of a thumb cup before. Now I need one 😊
Hi! Genuinely curious. Why is the cute mushroom painted first? Why not dip the cup in the white then add the mushrooms on top? (This is how I would do it with acrylic, for example). Is there a property of ceramics glaze where it has to be in this order? Or do you simply prefer the effect of doing it this way (with a kind of outline/ negative space around the mushrooms)? Very cute cup either way. 😊
And someone who does both clay and art, I could not tell you the amount of times someone has said, "Why are you ruining that ____" for example, one time i painted a flower on a clay bowl and my dad asked me why i was ruining the flower. I still find annoying but funny 🤣
