this might just be me yapping, but i think the reason why this doesn't sound microtonal, is because there are so many notes that are close to 12-TET. that even though they arent completely on it, it just feels slightly off, in the same way a person singing feels slightly off. It doesn't feel microtonal, it just feels human.
I think a lot of people get stuck in a loop where they create what they think will be popular rather than what they actually want to create, and an audience can sense the inauthenticity. Do your thing Jumble.
Exactly! Which is a losing battle because you’re constantly guessing as to what your hypothetical audience will like. Making the kind of music YOU want to hear is so much easier.
Well you know, ,some ppl when they go authentical and share their work, they are not seen at all. Saddly algorithms kill good art and authenticy. For example i know some artist that evej though they are good, have liek 20 or 15 followers.
“Microtonal” is vague anyway. Sound is vibration and notes that “sound” nice together are vibrations that divide easily into each other. For this reason in western music we arbitrarily arrived on 12 easy “divisions” that make up “standard” equal temperament. You can obviously though just take any given frequency of vibration, call that a note, and then divide it as many time as you feel is reasonable to come up with the other “notes” to play along with it. You can even divide frequencies over 300 times between any given frequency and the next double value of itself (which we hear as the “same” but one octave higher). Most earlier societies had less than 12 that they considered “real notes”
If u listen closely u will hear some notes sound out of tune but the brain quickly starts to get used to this new tuning with these many new notes so you may not even notice it that much. There are microtonal music where its far more noticeable, try Billabong valley by king gizzard or any of zheana erose pieces on yt
mutably, your comment is one of the most endearing and genuine comments in the section. if you said that about my music i would feel a lifetime of accomplishment
kinda same. I listen to gleam and don't even get thrown off from the quarter tones. There's both good and bad to this. It means that you can easily enjoy almost any microtonal piece, so long as you warm up to it enough, but at the same time, it makes it harder to create microtonal music, as, at least my ear is less sensitive to "out-of-tune" notes.
That's true! The more you work with microtonal music, the less "off" it sounds, and the harder it becomes to make anything that sounds dissonant or alien. That said, 12edo starts to sound less and less "default", too- and it can feel strange to revisit the home planet, so to speak!
