    Being married for 25 years, I actually forgot some of these things earlier on. But yeah we Malaysians are brought up with the Queens English from UK and hence why you have this problem in America and Canada. You actually won’t find this in England or Australia.
    The thing I remember most is when we were going to buy a house and my husband said let’s go to this one house, it has an open house, and I was like why, what holiday is it? Good times....

    • @AA-ke5bk

    • @karentheresa141
      @karentheresa141 4 года назад +7

      @@AA-ke5bk actually no, here in Canada and North America, when people want to sell their house they are living in sometimes they might have an open house for a few house that day, say from 1 to 3 or 10 to 2, during that time you can go look at the house without making an appointment.
      Not like in Malaysia, open house means we go for Hari Raya, Christmas, Deepavali or Chinese New Year

  • @jeffc1421
    @jeffc1421 Год назад +2

    I would say that different terms for the same object can be challenging but is actually a fairly low bar to overcome. As an American that lived for a short period of time in England, I found that I quickly understood terms such as lift, car park, petrol. But as someone of Chinese ancestry born in Iowa and growing up around Chicago, there is a collectivist vs individualistic nature to communication that can be more difficult in a relationship. I find that people with an upbringing influenced by Asian origins have more of a need to discuss what's going on and what "we" will be doing together. My wife often asks me why I might be seeking her "permission" to do something, while I'm just trying to align what we are doing for the day. Otherwise,I just go and do my own thing and she then asks me why I didn't set aside time to spend with her. There is a sense of compromise and collective action that seems to be inherent in Asian-influenced communications that seems less present in American English.

    Even some Malay words are different for some region. My grandma ask me if I want roti when she gave me biscuits. I told her that's biscuits not roti. When I was in kelantan I wanted to buy a ticket back to KL and the lady ask me 'Mu nk tiket selalu?' I told her 'Tak untuk hari ini saje'. Apparently selalu to them means now and sokmo is always. I was so confused.😂😂😂

      Tarmac v pavement.
      Pavement v sidewalk.
      Spectacle v eye glass.
      Horse ride v horseback riding.
      (The Americans obviously don't know where to ride on a horse. Thus, had to add 'back' to the horse. "Ah huh! Ureka! Now we know where to ride on the horse. On its back!" They would have not known anywhere else if it were written only 'horse ride'. 😂😂😂😂 Joke by British comedians.

      What 'headphone' were you referring to? I saw n read a 'handphone'. Though I admit you're right that the Brits do call it 'mobile phone'. "Call me on my mobile if I'm not at the office", is an example of sentence. However 25 to 30 years ago, a mobile phone in its original form was quite a chunky square box with a phone piece wired to the box with antenna, kept in a car or a briefcase to be used on the go. The Ericson's 'Mobira' mobile phone is one leading mobile back then. Perhaps, the 'mobile' phone is the term called that closely described n resembled the said bulky chunky squared box with antenna mobile phone unit of yester years. The later n most current tinier, cuter, neater, n smarter easily hand held mobile telephone in one's palm of a hand is perhaps best called with its more popular term as the 'handphone', especially by the people in the English speaking Commonweatlh countries worldwide apart from the UK.
      I never called a soft drink as a pop drink although do hear people called it a pop soda. I believe the term 'soft drinks' is also used to differentiate with alchohol drinks / liquor.

    It's not just the English language was influenced by UK actually our Electrical wiring system is purely UK design, for example if you randomly look at cable sizes in any Malaysian home, it always start with BS1002..003..44..etc, BS means = British standards. In Malaysia we use 240V ,and in US they use 110V at power socket. Which means an Electrical engineer graduated from UK or Malaysia might struggle a bit to understand US electrical circuit diagram. And i'm one of them :) :)
